Enjoying the MDR slow tempo 'Ni Bhakti Bhagyasudha'.
By the way, I refer you to Prof. TRS version in the Parvathi Blog...his rendering is excellent, and shows up the subtle identity of this raga even more than other versions.

Pathos in Mohana? Is it even possible? Here's a unique rendition of Nannu Palimpa by the inimitable MDR - http://ravi.gotdns.org:41952/share/Ryytw
Please ignore the brief uhhh... "interlude" during the kalpanaswaras.

Rkiran,
It's very nice of you to share these files.
However, the functionality of the file share system and the need for a Flash payer is hampering me (IPad!).
May I request that you share these tracks via Dropbox?

Listened to his brisk, yet soulful rendering of Vageeswari in Saraswathi by MMI yesterday - http://ravi.gotdns.org:41952/share/ZdLPu
Same song rendered by S Kalyanaraman with MC and UKS - http://ravi.gotdns.org:41952/share/sBnhA
Rsachi - At this time I am unable to upload to Dropbox. I will look for non-Flash alternatives to play the songs I am sharing. Sorry.

Re: My Track of the Day!
Not quite track of the day, rather, a concert that I listen to multiple times (once for the vocalist, once for the violin and once for the mridangam) every week.
A timeless, ageless, vintage legendary concert by MMI-LGJ-VR - Calcutta, 1962. http://ravi.gotdns.org:41952/share/DViSH. A string of pearls... every song is a gem. LGJ and VR enhancing the sheer brilliance of the concert in ways that only could.
Am traveling next week and so won't be able to post all week. Hopefully, the rasikas that participated enthusiastically in this thread earlier on will return to share more of their track de jours.

Wow!! Those who can get into MDR will definitely reap personal rewards with this rendition. So many different hues and bhavams of Mohanam. May not be a low hanging fruit like the other versions in my playlist but uber-tasty and extraordinary once I give it the time and space. Par for the MDR course.rkiran wrote: Pathos in Mohana? Worth looking at the tape speed . The slowness of which , might have added to the pathos . Lookout for the violin sound which is a give away .Pathos in Mohana?

Re: My Track of the Day!
MDR has a unique approach (not the saccharin sweet version) from other artists to Mohanam and his athi vilamba slow rendering adds to the effect. He usually adds a dose with his voice and dramatics to create a nice effect. One example is when MDR sings Vidadadhandakaranya in Mohanam in Bhavayami Raguramam.varsha wrote: Worth looking at the tape speed . The slowness of which , might have added to the pathos . Re: My Track of the Day!
I have a fascination with mallari and I just happened to find the link to an incredible mallari by Tiruvizha Jayashankar at Lokabhiramam, Sri. Vijayagopal's blog.
http://lokabhiramam.blogspot.in/2012/07 ... llari.html
Once it finishes you will find yourself exhilarated, exhausted and gasping for breath, just as a listener, all in a very good way. Or you may enter into a trance if you are susceptible to that kind of thing when aligned with such a rhythmic extravaganza. Watch out!
I know I am over selling it!
I should probably add this to my workout playlist.

This track is actually a Pallavi (line :Bhavayami Raghuramum) in Saveri with ragamalika swaras,
and not the regular krithi of Swati thirunal.

Good, good stuff there by Smt Vedavalli, not that we expect any less from the living legend of CM. ( I feel good for using those words for the right person ). She has infused that article with a lot of useful and interesting tidbits. I attended a lecture Demonstration in December 2010 by Sri. B.M.Sundaram ( demo by Injikudi ) where he covered similar material. Smt. Vedavalli provides the proper attribution to B.M. Sundaram for the help he provided for her work.
Mallari is a word that was/is in vogue in regular conversations around Temple festivals. Like 'Ah.. that sounds like Mallari. That means the procession has started. Let us go, let us go'. My father and grandfather's generation grew up with in stone's throw of the Mylapore temple and all these temple rituals are intertwined with their daily lives in an almost inseparable manner.
Question: Smt. Vedavalli mentions "The tradition in those days was not to play kriti-s. Instead, mallari wasfollowed by some kalpana swara, then rakti, which again was followed by swaraprastara and finally by a pallavi.". What is rakti in this context?
I have been 'putting forth a notion'' ( nervously ) elsewhere in other posts in this forum a simplified notion of Eduppu( for the sake of my own understanding in the simplest possible terms ) whenever that topic comes up. Nervous because of the doubt if my model, which is a first level approximation since it may not cover 100% of the cases, is an over simplification. But I am so delighted to see Smt. Vedavalli mention this: "..It ( mallari ) can also be played on ‘usi’ starting ¼ or ¾ away from or before the beat.." She does not mention it with reference to the start of the tala cylce ( thought that may be the case in practice ) but with reference to the beat. That is a significant thing for me since my simplified understanding is based on that. I add one more aspect of Strong and Weak beats to the model to include more cases. But that is just an enhancement to the basic notion which Smt. Vedavalli so succinctly describes. Precise, buzzword-less, clear and to the point.
