.
Leonardo da Vinci's drawing is correct! He has drawn a trotting horse!
Check these:-

2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rustytrotone.jpg
"The trot is a two-beat diagonal gait of the horse where the diagonal pairs of legs move forward at the same time with a moment of suspension between each beat."

Bala, I also reacted first like you. The full article is linked here. Quoting:
On the basis of the leg attitudes Fig. 4A could, in principle, depict a trotting horse. However, because the fore legs of trotting horses are never lifted so high, and the angle between the femur and tarsus cannot be nearly 90° this should be a walking horse. This is evident from the series of pictures taken of trotting horses by Muybridge (1887), for example.

Thanks for the link. Serious stuff!
Yes, it is not a trotting horse.
Nor a walking horse.
How about a dancing horse? !!

At the risk of being called flippant , I say
It looks like a horse with a sore leg , about to be shot for its own comfort .

Oh ye noble Equus striking a gallant pose
All hoofed up proudly, so prim and proper!
Yes, da Vinci drew you as you suppose
But Varsha's shot and you'll come a cropper!

P B,
I have also spotted a video that shows a similar posture. Well, we should perhaps ask a horse next time we see one. At today's Rep Day parade, the horses were kind of occupied.

They were occupied and went about seriously on the big parade day.
