Sunday Brunch

Post by Rsachi »

Folks,
I am proposing a new topic: Sunday Brunch.
These will be tracks which anyone ( surely I) will share on Sundays, for a leisurely listen.

Here is my first posting:
Mama Mia, this is surely some Sindhubhairavi!
Image
This is Dr. R. Visweshwaran, who simply freaked out this morning on 100.1FM.

PS: I confess I'm guilty as charged...I missed the first 20 min.or so.

Is this Dr. Vishweswaran different from the Late R. Vishvesvaran, the husband of bharatanATyam dancer, Smt. Chitra V, and nehew of Sri GNB?

Ravi,
Prof. R. Visweshwaran is a renowned musician, musicologist and composer hailing from Mysore. His family has produced many musicians. More about him here:Friday Review

He is a daring innovator. Listen to him, and you will know!

Ravi, Here is a lec-dem by Prof Visweswaran that I think you will like. http://www.shabda.co.in/?q=node/65

His namesake the late Sri R. Visweshwaran (h/o Smt Chitra Visweshwaran & nephew of GNB),was an excellent vocalist and accomplished Santoor player as well, student of Pt Shivkumar Sharma. Perhaps we should start a thread about him. He had a very interesting personality and was an immensely talented individual. His death was very untimely and sadly very few people talk of him much any more. He was a treasure trove of knowledge on both Indian classical systems of music.

Thanks Mahavishnu for that lec-dem link. Awesome indeed. I went there to just check it out but ended up watching the whole thing in one setting. I recalled liking very much Smt. Pantula Rama singing that fast paced Neelambari song. A totally different feel but still very much Neelambari.

Thanks Rsachi for picking Prof. Visweswaran to start the Sunday brunch thread.

Rshankar, Mahavishnu, and Vasanthakokilam,
Yes that lec-dem is very well done. And by the way that Neelambari kriti*corrected ex post-facto* is a favourite of Emani.
One personal anecdote.
When I was in high school in Myosre in '60s, a new arrival in class was a Veena player. Like Vageesh, he also became a close friend. He had come from Andhra and played the veena, exactly in the style of Chitti Babu. He then enrolled for veena classes with Prof. V. He COMPLETELY changed the style. One day he called me home to listen to Kharaharapriya Rama Nee Samanamevaru played and sung by his new guru. I recall that 45+ min exposition to this day as one of the musical highs of my life.

Prof. V used to play in Ramanavami and other occasions. He had a veena with the Simha/Yaali face turned upward, which suited his most masculine style of play. He would blow us away with his veena play and fireworks.

I have also heard him during that time sing a very sober bhajan session on a Gandhi Jayanthi day in the university campus outdoor venue one evening... it was so wonderfully sedate!
He has composed and released a set of tillanas on CD. I am sharing a track here:
Darbari Kanada Tillana composed and played by Prof. Vishweshwaran

Sreeni - thank you for that refresher course. It is so sad that more people do not know about such wonderful artists.
And I am so thankful to Rsachi and Mahavishnu for their responses to my original (rather ignorant) question...

Mahavishnu, I have heard that the (other) Late Sri R. Vishweswaran was a multifacted personality, but all my exposure to his music has been when he's accompanied his wife - and there was a period when I rarely missed a performance by her. Of all the dancers I saw, in those days, only three have stood out for consistently fantastic music that could have entertained on its own..one was Sri Vishweswaran, and the other was Smt. Syamala Balakrishnan, SIL and accompanist to Dr. Padma S, and the final was the incomparable Sri Raghunath Panigrahi who accompanied the sublime Smt. Samjukta.

Varsha-Ji,
Good morning. Sitting cozily in my huge, much-hated, addictive lazy-boy lounge sipping great coffee, I envy and respect these worthies! No matter that just y'day SSI was quoted here saying practising music neck-deep in water was not necessary.

I am a bit upset you beat me to it for today's brunch, as I was offering a delectable fare by Vid. Sethalapathi Balasubrahmaniam. He waxes eloquent at Shanmukhananda Hall for three hours about his gurunathar Papanasam Sivan.

Part 1. Part 2 .Part 3

Before listening to this, I did not know:
1. Papanasam Sivan was born Ramiah, a Malayalam-speaking Brahmin.
2. He was a Mahamahopadhyaya in Sanskrit.
3.He could compose a lovely lyric within minutes to a crooned film tune of those days.
4.He had ABSOLUTE mastery over the grammar of music, language and mood.
5. That he has composed over 1200 kritis!
6. His elder brother was the father in law of MGR!!!!
6. He had a fascination with Hindustani idiom.
7. He earned the sobriequet Papanasam Sivan because he devoutly travelled to many temples starting from Papanasam chanting Siva Siva.
8. He has composed a mangalam to Ganesha!!!!!!!!

After listening to Sri Sethalapathi's lec-dem, delivered in a most engaging style with words and songs that are to be savoured again and again, in the company of competent violin and mridangam, to a doting 'brunch' audience, I feel my life has been wasted thus far, not having heard Sivan's compositions for days and days from this master of a student.

Sri Balasubramaniam does a wonderful cameo of a full Sivan kriti sung by the one and only Madurai Mani Iyer, in exactly his way of articulating the music and lyrics. He says this nadabrahmam was such a supremo in presenting songs that GNB and SSI would stop singing those compositions as futile exercises in the face of MMI's stamp of genius.

Okay, let's make a deal. Your track today, and maybe mine for next Sunday :) More scrumptious than croissant and more delicious than degree coffee.

Done . I did not know how you planned to operate this thread . Reminds me of a similar deal Groucho Marx referred to , in one of his inimitable acts .
The scene is of a lawyers office and Groucho is quizzed about his office being free of flies .
Simple , he says . We have a deal with them . We agree not to climb the walls . And they agree not to practise law .
;)
Thanks . Sethalpatti was a personal favourite of mine too . I can share a fine video of his . not available in the public domain.
I my next slot , after a fortnight .

Varsha-Ji
Absolutely no chance of me operating any thread, with real stalwarts like you. I mean it in the most respectful way, knowing how much you give to all of us.
I was only joking.
Kindly share whatever you want. Some of us have a week of seven Sundays, as you might guess. The mood to enjoy a leisurely brunch, of music, more than anything else, takes precedence.
The one about Groucho Marx is wonderful. Well, he was lucky, New York mosquitoes didn't bite. Their career choices were restricted to two! Or could it have been flies?

With Marghazhi masam around the corner, this topic sounds interesting. There used to be a marghazhi masa bhajan morning 6 AM around Kapaleeswarar temple. Sethalapathi Balu mamam his chittappa (who was also a disciple of Papanasam Sivan) used to organize. Many musicians also used to join the Bhajan - DKJ, Santhanam, Prof. S. Ramanthan, PSN ... Balu Mama's viruttams are out of the world - Vizhhikku thunai ...

Papanasam Sivan's native village is Polagam which is about 8 miles inland from the coastal road between Karaikkal and Nagappattinam and about 6 miles from Nannilam.

That would make him a Tamil brahmin.

He lost his father when he was very young and his mother was sent off along with all her children by train to Trivandrum to fend for herself. Thus he had no formal schooling in Tamil and ended up learning Malayalam and Sanskrit.

This information is from a biography of Sri Papanasam Sivan.

Both he and his elder brother Rajagopala Iyer were active in the Tamil movie industry. Papanasam Sivan was credited as a song writer in several movies under the name Thanjai Ramiah Das. Vaikom Narayani-ammal Janaki, daughter of Rajagopala Iyer -- presumably through an extra-marital liaison on his part -- was an actress in Tamil movies and became the third wife of MGR and, in 1986 after the death of MGR, briefly became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It is thusly that MGR was the son-in-law of Papanasam Sivan's elder brother.

Rsachi; Three years since I joined the forum and I am still discovering treasures like this one--late to the party. Great contributions. Thanks a lot.

Re; Visweswaran(Chitra's husband). I knew him and his family very well (he was a couple of years younger than me and a couple of years older than my brother Sekhar--both did CA in Chennai(did not finish it--another anecdote on this later) around the same time and he had the same sense of humor of his uncle GNSir--an anecdote.

In the late eighties on one of my trips to Chennai from NY I took an AI flight via Bombay--with a layover of 3 hours for the AI flight to Chennai(6A.M.)--I had boarded the aircraft and I was still sleepy--the flight carried domestic passengers to Chennai and when they were boarding, I saw a gentleman dressed in Jibba bright eyed and a fine Kunkuma Pottu--simply dazzling--as he was walking in the aisle he stops in front of me trying to catch my eye and waiting for me to recognise him-Half dozing I could not--immediately he says in Tamil "ENNA MUZHICHU PAKKIRE--MAMA KITTE IRUNDU KATTHUNDADU IDU THAN"(translation: this is the only I thing I learnt from my uncle GNSir) Then it struck me it was Viswesh--we had not seen each other in fifteen years but he recognized me and was quick-witted to bypass the usual exchanges and straightaway launch into humor.

Another incident--this in the early 2000'- at a mutual friend's place we met-- just at that time a young girl apparently an artist greets him--Viswesh introduces me as the brother of Sekhar(my brother because of his dabbling in mridangam in his teen years was better known than I was!!) and tells the girl--"the only difference between Sekhar and myself(Viswesh) is that he (Sekhar) is a CHARTERED ACCOUNT AND I AM A SHATTERED ACCOUNTANT" taking a dig at himself for failing to make the CA ranks.

He was a creative genius and a very largehearted man like his uncle!!
