Gayatri Girish for Nalinakanti, 06/Dec/2012

Gayatri Girish - Vocal
V Sanjeev - Violin
B Sivaraman - Mrudangam
Adambakkam Sankar - Ghatam

slokam in bhUpalam
srI rAjamAthangi - suddhadhanyAsi - Adi - harikEsanallUr muthiAh bhAgavathar (S)
sri mahAgaNapathi - gowlai - m cApu - muthuswAmi dIkshitar
e vasudhA nI vanti - sahAnA - Adi - thyAgarAjA (R)

kalyAna gOpalam - kAmavardhani - Adi - nArayana thIrtha
thillAna (maNivaNNA kaNNA) - ? - Adi - ?
managalam pavamAna - madyamAvathi - Adi - thyAgarAja

Believe this is the first ever live concert I have attended of GG.

+ fantastic kalapramanam throughout the concert. even in the chittaswaram of gowlai - there was no rush through.
+ full throated open mouthed 95+% akara oriented singing, no mumbling/mennu muzhungal.
+ clear diction and enunciation of words
+ veenaiyadi was refreshingly different and sung in a tempo slower than those that I have heard. that made it shine brighter
+ very good accompaniment, violin repartee for karaharapriya was soooo good.
+ nilAmbari - what a nIlAmbari it was. the mandAri item that came after that was a total contrast.
- voice, at times one can sense kind of tension between what Gayatri wants the voice to do and what voice does something on its own. For lack of better word - pisir?
- only one nereval. think about it, GV also had just one nereval :(

overall, fantastic experience and extremely happy to have chosen to go there y'day. very sparse crowd though.

Thanks sankark for the detailed review of GG's concert and yes you made a good decision of going there !!!! I really love GG's style of singing with bhavam and the clear enunciation of words. Please do post more reviews of her concerts. Sitting here far away in cold Delhi, i can only wish to attend her concerts. Crowd is sure to come to experience the joy which you felt listening to her. Sankar - Thank you for that report. One of my favorite singers as well, with a great repertoire.
IMO, after Smt. MSS, Smt. GG is probably the only artist from whose singing one can write down lyrics accurately in most languages (with perfect discernment of aspirated consonants consistently) - most everyone else is not consistent by any stretch of imagination, and there are those that use inappropriately aspitaed sounds, like janArdhana instead of janArdana or bhrahmA for brahmA...

she does make some errors occasionally; a glaring one I remember is from her rendition of sadA sAranganayanE. She sings it as shrI sadAshivadahitE instead of sadAshivadayitE which means "burned by Shiva" instead of "wife of Shiva"!

I do beg to differ--- I have never heard a 'bhajeham' correctly from Nithyashree. Its always 'bajeham' as in Bajji, never 'natha' always 'nata' as in 'naatham' and so on! and it bothers the heck out of me! All mahapranas are absent :(

Ah I find that quite funny because I now remember this shlOka she was singing with the word dAridryadukha and she kept saying dha for each da - "superaspirating" them! :D
