Was YouTube surfing and chanced upon this beautiful video of Bismillah Khan and N. Rajam playing together in Varanasi some decades ago - the ambience and the music are both delightfully reposeful. I especially like the folkish phrases BK produces, and the kArvais themselves are so beautiful on the shehnai.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgu-xXwJWvs

I wonder if there are any nAdhaswaram-shehnai jugalbandis?

Also, what is the upapakkavAdyam in the video above?

A golden nugget from the past . Five minutes into the track I thought it was a track I was familiar with - Chowdiah playing brilliantly for GNB at Mysore . And then Manakkal breaks into E tavunnara.
Enjoy .What a song !!!!

Thanks varsha! I must admit I have listened to very little of Manakkal's music. This is an eye-opener. Should find more of his concerts and listen.

A day on which Doreswami Iyengar gives a scale to compose with at Gayana Samaj . And BMk comes with raga Dorai set to Trimukhee Tala . A krithi dedicated to Gayana Samaj .

BMK in a more serious mode with a haunting rendering of a classic . So malkaunsish

Thank you Varsha-ji. What a find! The amazing thing about BMK is how his voice still sounds the same today as it did in 1978. The Kalanidhi concert with UKS (that you have drawn the hindolam from) is simply superb!

Here is another from 1978. TNS with Lalgudi and Ramabadran singing Sri Sankaraguruvaram in Nagaswaravali from a concert in Trichy. The akaram in this is mindblowing.

Mahavishnu, are you sure it is 1978? Because Lalgudi must have been only 48 then!

@mahavishnu, @varsha, it it possible to upload the full concert? I have previously heard the Shankarabharanam piece which is outstanding and today the Nagaswarali kriti. Do you know the composer of 'Chintayare satgurum'?

Being commence ment of Margazi, I listened to MLV's Thiruvembavai..

at..

https://soundcloud.com/venkats68/mlv-thiruvempavai

Once, during Sankara Jayanti celebrations in Tiruvidaimarudur, Mahaswamiji had i
nvited renouned scholars.

He conducted Thiruppaavai and Thiruvempaavai conference (‘maanaadu’) and asked the popular carnatic singer M.L.Vasanthakumari to cut a disc.

It is these records that are very popular today. Tamizh Poets participated in Tiruvidaimarudur celebrations.

Mahaswamiji said that Thiruppaavai and Thiruvempaavai are our two eyes. Poet U.V. Swaminatha Iyer corrected him, “Kann illai! Paavai!” (Not eyes but the ‘pupils’). Mahaswamiji immediately appreciated it, “Nanru Pandidare! Nanru!” (Well said, Oh! Poet, Well said!) Mahaswamiji used to converse with those Tamizh Poets in their own style of pure Tamizh (‘shudha Tamizh’). One should not forget that the popularity of Thiruppaavai and Thiruvempaavai is only due to Mahaswamiji.

Unfortunately, I do not know the composer. Perhaps, Lakshman-ji or Keerthi could help.

If the words are chintayE sadgurum cinmaya rUpam it is by Vijagopalasvami. If they are cintayE sadgurum santatam it is by Naraharidasa. Both are in shankarAbharaNa.

Chintaye Re Sadgurum Santhatham is apparently a Guru Vandanam Krithi in the Harikatha tradition, so guess its more of a traditional composition - not sure of composer.. haven't heard any rendition other than this one-of-a-kind version with LGJ and another more recent one that I can't recollect, again by TNS..

The whole concert appears to have a "guru" theme. Gurulekha, manasaguruha, srisankara guruvaram, and chintayare sadgurum.
It is a one-of-a-kind concert.

In his Kalanidhi concert in 1978, BMK is supposed to have sung one of his own compositions, tracing his lineage from Thyagaraja to himself. Don't know the raga. If anyone has this piece can you please upload it?

Read from some humbler poet, 25
Whose songs gushed from his heart,
As showers from the clouds of summer,
Or tears from the eyelids start;

Who, through long days of labor,
And nights devoid of ease, 30
Still heard in his soul the music
Of wonderful melodies.

Such songs have power to quiet
The restless pulse of care,
And come like the benediction 35
That follows after prayer.

Then read from the treasured volume
The poem of thy choice,
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
The beauty of thy voice. 40

And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares, that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.

Came across a lovely composition tuned by Voleti in Desi Todi.
Made me listen to the bench mark rendering by Amir Khan - Paluskar for Baiju Bawra
And soulful rendering by Munawar Ali Khan
All three in this dropbox folder

A composition by OVK....RENSERED BY mUMBAI sISTERS...

Kanchi periva thiruvadigal saranam....

Lyrics...
