Valachi Vachi Alternative Version?

Post by gajamukhu »

Hi,

Has anyone listened to this alternative version? http://www.sangeethamshare.org/page.php ... eethapriya

You may need to log in to get to the page. Once there, click the download button. The main download server does not work, but (currently) mirror 2 does.

I guess you can name this nava-ragamalika (nava = new!)

Thanks Ganesh. It is definitely nava to me. In the Purvanga I was wondering what you are talking about though the Begada swaras seemed different ( not sure ) but Uttaranga is when I knew what you meant. I will leave it at that so I do not spoil the fun of discovery for others.

Interesting.

Some of our members like Keerthi may know something about this version. Let us see.

Is the Anupallavi lyrics also different from the popular version?

This is the first time I've heard this version. What I do know, (which may not illuminate this case,though) is that the signature vEnkaTesa in varnams has been used by several composers*, and there has been a degree of confusion regarding the varnams of PaTnam Subrahmanyayyar, and those of KottavAsal VenkaTaramaNa Iyer, who was a teacher of TirukkoDikAval Krishnayyar, the maternal uncle of Semmangudi SrinivAsayyar.

There are rare cases of the same varna being attributed to Patnam and Pallavi doraswAmayya.Varnams by the latter include SarasijamukhirO in Arabhi, ninnu kOri [not the well known one, this is another] in mOhana and ErA nA pai in mukhAri. The latter is known to exist in a pAthantaram that has vEnkatEswara in the text, and attributes the varnam to Patnam; as well as in one with the mudra 'subrahmanya' attributed to Doraswamayya.

I suspect this is a case of 'one man's name is another man's mudrA'.

* Refer B.M. Sundaram's near-exhaustive article -mudras in tanavarnams.
