Vijay Siva for BGS, 07/Dec/2012
Vijay Siva - vocal
Amrutha Murali - Violin
J Vaidyanathan - Mrudangam
There were two different concerts - one in the carnAtic sampradAyam. Just a word of caution though - don't kick yourself in case you missed this intentionally.
evvari bOdhana - AbhOgi - Adi - patnam subramania iyer
sAketha nagara - harikAmbodhi - rUpakam - mysore sadAsiva rAo (NS@rAjitha amarapAla)
karuNa jUdavammA - pantuvarALi - Adi - shyAmA sAstri (RS)
nannu vidachi - rItigowlai - m cApu - thyAgarAjA
abhayAmbikAyAh anyam - kEdAragowlai - jhampa- muthuswAmi dIkshitar (RS@abhayAmbikAyAm)
raksha bettarE - bhairavi - Adi - thyAgarAjA (RNS@sangeethapriya thyAgarAja)
dhanyudevvaro dAsarathE - malayamArutham - Adi - patnam subramania iyer
RTP (jagadambE gadavantha sannibE bEgadayothOlE/rE tri) - kanda triputa 2 kalai - bEgadA (1/2 or 1 eduppu?) & tani
Viruththam (ee endru - ramalingar arutpA? in ?, sahAnA, kambhOji) followed by
vAngum enakku iru kai - kAmbhOji - Adi - oothukAdu venkata subbaiyer
slOkam (mahA yOga peeTe)
+ almost everything
+ Especially JV's mridangam throughout. His accompaniment for each and every sangathi of raksha bettarE would be an object lesson for any mridangam student. sowkyamana vasippu
+ acoustics of the concert hall (Sivagami PethAchi Auditorium)
- "almost" because RTP was very short - about 25 minutes - excluding thani which was for about 10 mins.
followed by bhajan sampradAyam ("this too shall pass"?)
abhang? - ? - ? - ? - he also had cymbals/jAlra for this one.
dasaslOki - rAgamAlika - Adi - Adi Sankara (na mATA na was in rEvati I think, others no idea)

Re: Vijay Siva for BGS, 07/Dec/2012
It is a pity that artistes of Shri Vijay Siva's caliber sing 25 minute RTPs. Makes me yearn for the days of GNB and SSI where RTP used to be an hour long affair, at least. Not that I have seen GNB or SSI.
I am sure no one cares if Isairams and Daruns of the world sing RTPs or not. An artiste of Vijay Siva's ability and scholarship should certainly sing stud level pallavis and not reduce it to some my-concert-too-had-pallavi sort of an exercise.
I hope there was enough audience in the hall. He certainly deserves wider patronage than artistes of the kind who start the concert with mangalams and end with varNams.

Reckon 80% of the hall was full, no mass exodus during thani & a standing ovation at the end.
RTP - whatever RTP's I have heard of DKP/DKJ (his gurus) in recordings are also short ones - 25 - 30 min affairs.

Re: Vijay Siva for BGS, 07/Dec/2012
Smt MS amma in her music academy concert (If I am right Sangeetha kalanidhi concert) has also sung a single raga bhairavi RTP for just 25 mins .This is also a single raga Begada pallavi. IMHO Vijay Siva usually does not take a longish pallavi , that is more of his style. So one cannot compare Vijay Siva with a GNB or SSI in presenting a long pallavi. We have few artists of present generation who will give a glimpse of what GNB or SSI did (I can think may be 4 at the top of my head ), but Vijay Siva adopts a non longish approach for pallavi like his guru DKJ. All said when there is no constraint of time to finish in BGS , the artist can certainly dwell more.

Could an expert in Kannada please clarify and provide the meaning of the RTP lyric? I can't make it out based on the Kannada I know (IF it's kannada - definitely doesn't look like anything else to me)

"jagadambE gadavantha sannibE bEgadayothOlE/rE tri"
This does not look like kannaDa.

I think it is. In fact, I finally make a little more sense of it. It must be bEga daya tOrE as in "show mercy quickly". I still don't get this "gadavantha".

This most definitely not kannaDa. I have seen people confusing the rAga kanada for begaDa. This is a first with the language kannaDa being caught in a begaDa confusion.
"jagadambE gadavantha sannibE bEgadayothOlE/rE tri"
the d in gadavanta has to be the Damaru/ Davara D and not the dampatI d, since this appears to be an attempt to embed the rAgamudrA in the pallavi. This is some species of sanskRt. The word gaDayanta is a little used term for clouds; and has probably been used here to say 'cloud-complexioned' in gadayantha-sannibhE
This is quite a contrived effort to stitch in the rAga-mudra. They could have tried something simple like 'anbE! gaDavAn pUnaiyE! naDai-yAnaiyE!' if the aim was to use rAgamudrA.

Somebody please bring this to the attention of Arun Prakash or R. K. Sriram Kumar. One of them would suggest this to T M Krishna and we would be able to hear this in a concert this season! ]keerthi wrote:

VS sang the same pallavi in the Academy concert Dec 2011. I thoroughly enjoyed it (and the rest of the classy concert) and line did not appear too contrived. I forget the exact line, but it was very similar (if not the same!) and all Kannada - if you allow for the free use of Sanskrit adjectives and names in most Indian languages. Else it is allowed as a Manipravaaala line!

karuna jUdavammA Ashrita jana kalpavalli - that is the song he sang. Are there a varali version and pantuvarali versions? I see some hits for "karuna jUdavamma pantuvarali" in google.

If it were Sanskrit, the word used would have been jagadamba not jagadambE for grammatical correctness (addressing the mother)keerthi wrote:This is some species of sanskRt.

Re: Vijay Siva for BGS, 07/Dec/2012
My interpretation:
trijagadaMbE - saMbodhana prathama vibhakti for feminine:(address) as oh, mother of the three worlds! Works in Sanskrit and Kannada.
gadavantha - can't figure this one, sorry. Maybe a distortion of some name of a flower or some radiant object.
saMnibhE - again address as 'oh one resembling....'the word gadavantha links here. Works in Sanskrit and Kannada,
bEga - hurry..it is a Kannada word. vEga would be Sanskrit.
dayatOre- show mercy, Kannada.
One issue, the raga is bEgaDa, and the element da is not the same as Da.

I think it is quite unreasonable to expect a very long RTP; there has already been considerable manOdharma of R, N and S kind in harikAmbhOji, kAmavardhani, kEdAragauLa (in jhampai tALam) and bhairavi.

Srikant, I believe the pallavi comment was for a different concert (NSG's). In fact there are three concerts being reviewed in that one column (without subheadings), which makes for very confusing reading.
In general, I find that this reviewer (Lakshmi Venkatramanan) and I disagree on most things. I find her nitpicks are mostly irrelevant and quite often, unfair.

Mahavishnu, I was responding to sankark and sreebeecane. I didn't even read the The Hindu review.

This reviewer once brought a friend along to a concert upon learning that the artiste was including a Vagadeesvari kriti. The reason: she had not heard this raga before and wanted an "expert" opinion. The ensuing review duly included a nitpick on the Vagadeesvari piece, claiming it meandered into Bahudari (!)mahavishnu wrote:...
