Sangeeta Swaminathan @ MFA 18-12-2012 - Live
Accompanists:
B. Ananthakrishnan
V. Sankaranarayanan
Rajaraman (g)
Started with navaragamalika varnam with plenty of ornamentation characteristic of the artist placing particular emphasis on the jeeva swaras of the constituent ragas.
Followed by gurulekha etuvanti. A full throated neraval at tatva bodhana jesi & a long plaintive kaapadu brought out the full emotion in the lyric. The swara prasthara was a more joyous affair with light flourishes & straight notes.
Raramainti daga in asaveri was sung in a tidy fashion. That brought to close the first half hour of the concert.
A beautiful abheri alapana followed with many delectable phrases at one instance fleetingly reminding of singara velaney deva bringing a smile to the attentive.

Kayarohanesam was the kriti chosen not commonly featured in the chennai kuchery circuit.
Sri chakra raja nilaye, GNB composition in sivasakthi followed setting up the main for the morning.
A wonderful mellow subhapantuvarali alapana in progress.

Fabulous support from the accompanists. Anathakrishnan not hesitant to go toe-to-toe
in playing sangatis & swaras & Sankaranarayanan keeping it soft & subtle.

Aaah... That was quick!
Interesting & elongating patterns in the swaraprasthara stimulating the right brain make this a complete confluence of both the cerebral & aesthetic flavors of carnatic music.

Thanks mahavishnu.
Great concert made it worthwhile fighting the weekday morning traffic.
Same tillana at partha now
Is there some trick in this tillana? Thought i heard some revathy swaras too.

oh yes it is a misra-sivaranjani, actually. Tends to have that potpourri effect.

V. Sankaranayanan was singing in the same time slot. Heard the last two pieces sung with both gusto & sensitivity. Hope to hear a full concert of his soon.

If I remember it correctly the last part of the tillana has a built in greha bhedam. Revati results from the Ri and sunadavinodini from the Ga.sureshvv wrote: Is there some trick in this tillana? Thought i heard some revathy swaras too.

Mohan, yes you are right. I had always assumed that the effect was from anyaswaras/ notes foreign to the scale.
