IMHO, completeness or fulfillment from a raga rendition need not be necessarily proportional to the time taken to render it, as suggested by the OP....if one listens to old concerts, in particular KVN more so, his guru ARI, (Musiri too) we would notice that they would have hardly sung the raga for 3-4 minutes but still would leave a legacy of the raga's essense in listeners ears. In fact, the great Thiruvalagadu Sundaresa Iyer (aka "Suswaram' Sundaresa Iyer) used to handle ragas only for 2 or 3 minutes in return to the main artists' elaborate turns - but even then, greats like GNB used to be a bit nervous after singing a 20 mt alapana because the return 2-3 minutes would bring the same effect (or some times better the vocalists' version).....and the term used on TSI's playing was "Ratnasurukkam"......Preferences may be very different: some prefer to hear longer versions and some shorter ones - but what brings in fulfillment is more associated with quality than quantity!

The Legends you mentioned are exceptions to most of our opinions. If its ARI or TSI, i wouldnt mind it sir..

Feeling happy and contended is diff from Completely Satisfied.

Its sadly true that In Current gen, there is no ARI or TSI.

Btwn, am not Saying, Quantity shud be put in front of quality. No fool wud say that.. But simply doing 3-4 short alapanas instead of elaborating one or two of them will never give one complete satisfaction.

Hmmmmmm when you say quantity, quality, completeness, it just rings a bell on some post someone wrote here ;) ;) .
I get what you are saying , this fragmentation is a real bane, include not just R but even N and S .

I agree on your statement "One/Two good, elaborate alapanas are way better than 3 / 4 short ones".
