Too many sruti lapses. Not worth writing anything more ...

i attended this music academy concert. not sure about the mfac one but i enjoyed this thoroughly. my personal opinion on the critique of his sruthi is unfair. except for maybe one or two it was fine. if applause was anything to go by, the 2 minute applause by the audience in the auditorium that was full below at 12 noon on a weekday after the concert proved the young musicians effort and hard work. imho ramakrishnan murthy and rithvik raja are two musicians who have a sense of sruthi and aesthetic in their music which is missing in most other young performers. rithviks thodi neraval and kalpanaswaram today were very good and the confidence with which he sang his srir anjani and thodi ragams was great to see. it was heavily attended not just by rasikas but also a number os senior and young musicians. his concert at vani mahal was also full and received very well i hear. the list today is as follows
varnam - sriragam - adi
vallaba - begada - roopakam
bhuvinidasudane - sri ranjani - adi
biranavara - kalyani - adi thishra nadai
dasharathi - thodi - adi
aadum chidambaramo - behag - adi
i make it a point to never miss ram or rithvik when they perform off season in chennai. ram is singing at the krishna gana sabha tomorrow with uks so might hopefully be there. bharat sundar is also good and i think the three of them are the ones to watch out for.

This kind of "review" doesn't help, especially for people who were not in the concert. Maybe they agree / dis-agree. Ideally, you'd put a song list and then say what *you* found wrong / not-aesthetic / sruthi lapse etc. It's also kind of insulting not to mention fellow artists on the stage, I can even understand when people say "I didn't get the name of the xxxxxx artist, can someone in the concert let me know?".
Simply doing these one liners is pointless and frankly wasting time.

While I appreciate your views on this particular concert, grouping one artiste with a cohort of others does not do any of them any favours. They are each separate and independent musicians in their own right with distinct training, background and styles. They should be appreciated and critiqued for their own merits. In fact, they have little in common other than the fact that they are young musicians and that you happen to like all of them.imho ramakrishnan murthy and rithvik raja are two musicians who have a sense of sruthi and aesthetic in their music which is missing in most other young performers.....

I also agree with MaheshS that the nature of the one-liner from the OP is not productive.

Who the accompanying artists were on that day is there all over the place - in MA website, http://www.kutcheris.com etc etc. It is not that the concert happened at my backyard and I had to announce the teamMaheshS wrote: It's also kind of insulting not to mention fellow artists on the stage, I can even understand when people say "I didn't get the name of the xxxxxx artist, can someone in the concert let me know?".

Then why write even that single line.. If you feel the concert was really bad then clearly say why it was. Artists who are following this space might take it as a feedback. Also, rasikas like me who are following this season through forums like these eagerly look forward to the reviews. So it would be nice on your part to mention about the accompanists, his song list etc.

Hello eesha,
I take an exception to this statement. You could have as well published your one liner review on those sites as well rather than wasting a thread here. As most of the other rasikAs do here, its better to stick to the song list and present your objective view of what went well and what did not go well.

Eesha's "review" while harsh and lacking in certain essential elements certainly conveys his/her priorities in musical taste and general impression of the concert. No need to chastise anyone over this.

That was what I did. To repeat - there were too many sruti lapses. With the one liner I wanted to convey that it was not great concert. If the expectation is to write a few paras on this, then we have divergent views on this.shankarabharanam wrote:If you feel the concert was really bad then clearly say why it was. So let us agree to disagree and leave it there

This forum's rules that I agreed to when I signed up did not say that one line reviews are not acceptable. So I will post detailed/ one liner reviews depending on the merits of the concert. I need no advice on which sites I should post to.badari wrote:[

yes. i totally agree. i was just saying that imho these three are the ones to look forward to. no way was i implying that they sing alike or that they have similar styles. sorry if it sounded like that.mahavishnu wrote:While I appreciate your views on this particular concert, grouping one artiste with a cohort of others does not do any of them any favours.
agreed eesha but maybe a few lines on where the lapses where (dont think there were any but since you do) and how the music and presentation was could have helped others who werent there get a better picture of the concert. just a suggestioneesha wrote:This forum's rules that I agreed to when I signed up did not say that one line reviews are not acceptable.
