The author seems to be Rohan's mother known on this forum as Rama Krishnamurthy, if I'm not mistaken.

You are mistaken.smala wrote:The author seems to be Rohan's mother known on this forum as Rama Krishnamurthy, if I'm not mistaken.
It is Rohan's father.
Googling for the name led me to identify the author's gender.

You think kids growing up in India who have learnt music don't face career dilemmas?uday_shankar wrote:http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/che ... 246042.ece

Exactly how many opportunities existed/exist for Zubin Mehta? Madhav Chari, the jazz pianist of Madras? The Madras String Quartette? Anil Srinivasan?
The guys who have formed the band Agam who played at The Hindu Friday Review November Fest continue in their day jobs, I think. Quite a few Carnatic musicians do too.
I am going to get a bucket so I can cry myself a bucketful of tears for the Indian kid growing up in North America who has to make a choice between a cushy, well-paying job in a comfortable setting and having to compete against really talented folks in Chennai and finding out that life is not a cakewalk. ;(

BTW, the Zubin Mehta example doesn't fit. Once he went to study in Vienna, his international career was made. But I agree with the others.

Hey thanks for the pointer. Either parent, so not so far off the mark but thanks for the correction anyway. There was a case of The Hindu misreporting names earlier. The same paper seems not to have messed up the article at least. So, yay.

Oh yea... I came here thinking I could, at least, go on accompanying children. Found I wasn't even up to that.harimau wrote:I am going to get a bucket so I can cry myself a bucketful of tears for the Indian kid growing up in North America who has to make a choice between a cushy, well-paying job in a comfortable setting and having to compete against really talented folks in Chennai and finding out that life is not a cakewalk. ;(
No real poblem: life is nice in the audience
