Artistes be part of so many rasAs and bhAvas in a single concert. So, we cannot be stationery in a single mood and (f)pond of emotion. So, even if we are paid well, we are 'thEngA moody' artistes.

thEngA = not still.

I have registered myself as a member of this group very recently.
I find this section very interesting and I express my gratitude to all the participants who have shared the 'real' anecdotes. Permit me to add to this valuable collection.

It must be 1946 and the venue, then called "Komti Matham" in Salem Town situated on the road connecting Sri Sukavaneswaraswmy Temple and First Agraharam.
Occasion-A marriage reception in the family of (late) Sri Goshteswara Iyer of Then famous Coimbatore Lodge.
Chembai's five- hour-concert with two Thani sessions was coming towards its end.
All along,a Grand venerable old gentleman was cheerfully appreciating and encouraging the performing team.
When Chembai sang a brief aalapanai in Hamsanandi, the entire audience were enjoying the depth of the Raga which has its natural 'Karuna rasa' and the gentleman gestured his appreciation. Chembai started the song," Ummai Maravaadhirukka Varam Arulvaai" and added the words "Hey Thaathaa-Ummai Maravadhirukka" appealing and bowing to the venerable gentleman !! The entire audience burst into laughter including the person who was addressed thus. Liveliness was instantaneously restored in the sabhai !

After a wedding reception performance by the late Shri. Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, the groom's father told the music legend:

'Your recital now is much superior to what you sang last year. '

Ariyakudi replied " Ivvidam pattu appidiye thhaan irukku.

Avvidam dhaan gnaanam konjam vandhirukku. Adhanal dhaan appidi theriyaradhu

MDR was giving a concert in Mumbai long back..

some one sent him a chit with a request for 'VArugalamo ayya' of GK Barathy at the fag end of the concert ..

to which the quick witted MDR said "I thought of saying pogalamo and you are asking for varugalamo !"

learnt from a FB friend...

why did you sing 'pAlum pAlum theLi thEnum theLi thEnum ', twice in that viruththam?
I forgot pAgum paruppum and didn't want to sing ivai iraNdum kalandhunakku, so sang them twice and continued, ivai nAlum kalandhunakku, I will give :)
It's OK, tolerable. One guy was advised to sing with lot of azhuththam. He sang, pppAlum theLith thEnum and someone screamed, "STOP, almighty is alive!"

Recenty while making Navarathri rounds heard a young girl blithely belting out Thyagaraja's "Ramuni maRavakavE.."
I asked her whether she was a Republican but she was puzzled, though the audience immediately got the message. Then I added that she must balance out by singing "Obama maRavakavE..". Then she got it and was in an uncontrollable laughter...

==================

==================

Another anecdote testifying to MV'Is 'chaturyam". Told by me father. In the late forties my father had arranged a concert of MVI in Bombay(not in Shanmukhananda Sabha)--the accompaniments arranged were T.Chowdiah and I think Ramnad Eswaran on the Mridangam(Ramnad Krishnan's brother). Chowdiah Sir could not make it due to some personal commitments. At the last minute the morning of the concert my father scrambled and got a local artist for violin and checked with MVI whether it was OK. MVI unsure of the calibre of the Violinist, reluctantly agreed(first he suggested that he would sing without the violinist-more than doubts about the Violinist MVI had calculated in his own mind to ask for the violinist's remuneration as well !!! My father demurrhed and reluctantly MVI agreed to let the accompaniment play for him laying out a condition that he should simply keep the bowing and not attempt to follow him(MVI was known to take liberties with the Sahityam and layam as it suited him on the spot!!). The violinist complied and the concert went off well--thanks to MVI's JilJiluppu sangeetham(his Arabhi,Mohanam,Hindolam were outstanding!!).
After the concert when the time came for handing out the remuneration,MVI's was first followed by Ramnad Eswaran's( both previously agreed upon). After the violinist's remuneration was handed over --a small sum--more of a token (he was pleased too having had the opportunity to accompany the Great MVI)
MVI calls my father and asks him what he had contracted to give Chowdiah had he shown up. and what did he pay the local artist My father mentioned the respective amounts without realising the "scheming-mischievous" intent of MVI behind the "seemingly-innocuous" question. MVI stunned my father with a demand that MVI be paid the difference between the two remunerations!! His argument was " I am the aggrieved party here having to manage without a top class accompaniment--How can I let the Organisation benefit from this arrangement. My father's committee members argued it was not fair on MVI's part but my father saw the logic and said afterall if Chowdiah had shown up we would have had to shell out the money anyway so that it is not an out-of-pocket expense for us!!

Needless to say MVI stood his ground and later on told my father that friendship should not intervene in such professional contracts and he would gladly sing for a wedding in our family!!

In my life I have seen several instances similar to this affecting our family where the professional arrangements were strictly separated from the personal gestures/favors and my father learnt a valuable lesson that his personal influences/contacts should not be used to "hurt" the livelihood of the professionals no matter how compelling the need of the fledgeling institutions for financial thrift that he was part of may be!!!

Nice stories!
I have heard similar ones regarding his son Santhanam who was equally known for கண்டிப்பு in remuneration matters.
As they would say in colloquial
"அப்பனுக்கு பிள்ளை தப்பாமல் பிறந்திருக்கு" :D
(and that refers to his musical genius as well!)

MKR sir
I am sure you would remember and I hope it is ok for you to state the actual figures of how much your dad had to shell for the artists then in that era. I speculate it is far more money considering the cost of living then.

Rajeshnat, Sorry,I do not remember the rates in this particular case although I remember the rates paid by Shanmukhananda in the early fifties when my father was Secretary and bargained with the leading musicians--SSI/GNB/MMI/PMI/Palani/TNK/LGJ et al that time so as to help the building fund which finally came up in 1960-61 promising them that once the Hall comes up and the membership rolls(they exceeded 3000) increased --- the artistes would be commensurately compensated. An interesting anecdote(sorry for the digression from this thread about MVI and your question about remuneration_).

Once after the Hall came up there was a Performance(I do not remember the vocalist) but PMI was the Mridangist--my father had retired from active participation in the affairs but was occasionally consulted about upcoming artistes etc by the younger crowd. After the performance when PMI left for Chennai my father as usual went to the Dadar Station to see PMI off by the Madras Express(in those days the artistes would perform on the Sunday and leave the next day afternoon for Chennai-although PMI would prefer to have the Sunday concert over by 8:30 so that he could catch the Chennai Mail leaving at night around 9 or 9;30 P.M!!!). Before the train left ,as a parting word PMI politely asks my father "Now that the hall has come up and membership rolls have increased can we revert to the "rates" prevalent prior to the austerity
/sacrifice days. It was then my father realised that the rates had remained at the "default" rate as he had not made sure that the sabha authorities knew about this mutual arrangement. Then it was immediately corrected. My father's admiration for PMI and artistes like him(MMI was another artiste who never talked remuneration although he got the top bucks because of "sure-fire- gate collection!!) grew immensely--mind you performances in Bombay or calcutta or Delhi in those days were an annual event as there were not many sabhas of the size of Shanmukhananda so that however big the rates might look vis-a-vis Chennai ,for the artistes these instances were infrequent. Looking back given the kind of family commitments each one of them had,I can hardly consider the remunerations as greedy or avarice and if some of them were demanding --as Chembai was-- he demanded Rs.1000(which at that time even Ariyakudi much senior to him did not get--as a result Chembai did not perform for Shanmukhanada for a long time till such time another rival Sabha which is now defunct--Bharatiya Fine Ats offered him and Shanmukhananda followed suit thereby enhancing the rates for all the other senior musicians!! A rising tide lifts all boats!!!
Someday I will start a thread about compensation practices for Musicians and Literary Authors and the parallels--based upon my Publishing company experience--The Irving Stone vs. Leon Uris,Danielle Steele and Barbara Bradford Taylor,Tom Clancy/John Greshamj(younger rasikas no doubt avid readers may look askance at these ancient names!!)

very interesting tussles--clash of egos and our heroic attempts to assuage and massage their egos in the face of competition from rival publishers--
In the case of Music thank God the proliferation of Sabhas in India(large/medium sized cities) and overseas has eased this problem to a large extent although Institutions especially abroad still find the "haggling" irksome!!!

An anecdote linking MVI and Palladam Sanjeeva Rao. There was a Palladam concert @ the R.R.Sabha Hall in Sundareswarar Street near the Kapali temple. which MVI attended(more for protocol sake than admiration or courtesy!!)--After a few items, MVI slowly tried to slip away unobtrusively--however a Palladam fan who was also an MVI admirer rushed to MVI and gasping for breath said in Tamil "Rayarval(that was how Palladam was affectionately called amongst his friends and admirers),Katru(a sangeetha paribhashai for Blow) evalavu sukham(How soothing is Paladam's blow) To which MVI replied in Tamil which translated in English-- If I want katru(breeze) in Mylapore I would go to San Thome Beach why would I be sitting in RR Sabha hall?

Another MVI anecdote cited by Flute Ramani @ Vellore Ramabhadran's 80th Birthday celebs in Mylapore (arranged by VKV).
Circa Mid Nineteen thirties-- ALATHUR Brothers had just come up on the CM scene and they had a concert in Kumbakonam attended by leading Vidwans of that time including MVI. It was the brothers' custom to agree upon briefly before the concert as to what items they would be singing not necessarily the sequence and they would "wing" it by just pausing a trifle when one opens the krithi and the other would jump in. Subbier starts with Enthanerchina in Saveri and immediately Srinivasa Iyer in haste mistakenly starts Enthanerchina in suddha danyasi--immediately Subbier thinking that he had made the mistake and switches to the Suddhadanyasi kriti hoping to be in unison with Srinivasa Iyer--simultaneously Srinivasa Iyer thinks he has made the mistake and switches to Saveri-apparently this mix-up went one or two rounds. MVI gets up and asks "Enda Nerchina Padapporel?(which endenerchina are you going to sing with the emphasis on Enda).

CMLover: You have stolen my thunderI am planning to resume the SSI saga(immediately after the season ends!!) after a lapse of almost two years!!
Vasanthakokilam--Glad you enjoyed it!! Another MVI quip--MVI had gone to his native village for a couple of concerts. The day of the concert,he comes across an young man known to him and tells him (Kondu,I am singing today at the temple--do not miss it--to which the young man replies: not today Anna, you are singing tomorrow as well and I willl catch up with it. MVI says in Tamil(Nalaikku Irukkanameda-) The young man assuming MVI was referring to himself(MVI),says No Anna--Neengal kandippai Iruppel(You will definitely be around!!) MVI says--Ennacholladaida,nee irukkaname Nalaikku enru sonnen !! On a personal note--- lest forumites should get an impression of a cunning, money-grabbing Vidwan--he was a wonderful host--an epicurean in his taste--I have visited him along with my parents when I was 15/16 (if I remember right he lived in Nungambakkam--Jambulinga Street at that time)--we were treated to one of the finest Tanjore-typical gourmet meals!!

By the way for forumites in Chennai I am planning to visit Chennai between Jan 15 th thru Feb 20th--any possibilities of meeting in one of the concerts--the Asthika Samajam Festival generally is around that time!!

:) Thanks V'kailsam.

So all can enjoy the humorous cartoon and the words.. ( I was laughing all the way while transliterating and translating. A lot of fun )

sangIta vidwAn :- ( mun varisaIyil pEsikkoNDirukkum piramukarkaLaippArthu ) 'sAr, nAn pADarathunAlE ungaL reNDu pErukkum iDanjal oNNum illaiyE. irundA sollalAm'

Translation does not bring out the humor as well, but still humorous to read it while looking at the cartoon.

Vocalist : - ( addressing the VIPs sitting in the first row and talking ), 'Saar, Hope my singing is not disturbing you two. If so, please tell'

Today (Dec 30, 2012). Sri T N Seshagopalan was singing the morning concert at the Music Academy. He started the Brindavana Saranga RTP late and the concert went to about 12:50. Sri Trichur Ramachandran got up from the VIP row and started to leave the hall at the end of the RTP.

Suddenly, T N S started a bhajan loudly beginning with "Ramachandra Prabho".

Trichur Ramachandran stood still, turned around and looked at the stage and left the hall.

The audience was amused.

The eccentric flautist who blew hot and cold
B. Kolappan......

Renowned flautist T.R. Mahalingam alias Mali had once wanted a member of the audience at the Music Academy removed from the hall before the concert could begin.

The member is said to have put up a stiff resistance, but Mali stuck to his guns and refused to perform unless he had his way. Thereafter, the audience prevailed upon the person to leave; that person was none other than Mali’s father Ramaswami Iyer....

Trichur Mohan, Mridangist & F/O Trichur Brothers has great sense of humour. When Ramkumar went to see Rema before marriage (Pon pakka ) Mohan introduced the family as CA family. He said Ramkumar is CA, His mother is MCA & himself FCA. Rema's mother & Rema were overwhelmed. Mohan broke the silence by saying, Ramkumar has studied CA, my wife is mother of CA "MCA" & I am father of CA "FCA". Rema immediately agreed to marry Ramkumar & they are happily married. Incidentally Rema sings beautifully & Rema's mother is a composer. She sang at at Brahma Gana Sabha. Has a lovely voice & KVN Schhol padantharam. Learnt from Padma Chandilyan.

KNV,
Good one. Reminds me of how most youngsters today are very focussed on getting a good PG and flaunting an MBA.

Read Paying Guest acco. For PG and Apple MacBook Air for MBA!

In a conversation with sishyAs, recently the topic went to film music and music directors. I told, "This is one of the secrets about Ilaiyaraja. I am going to share when 'actually' Raja started music scoring; don't tell anyone that you knew this, OK?"

sishyAs: 'sir!! OK sor, sure sir.. won't tell anyone sir'

"That's good. (I had shared this in Facebook, shall copy paste it too enjoy reading pleasure) Actually, Raja was playing guitar for G.K.Venkatesh for some time. A wonderful interlude of two cycles in Adhi thALam, 16 beats was given to Raja and he was stunned by the amazing composition. That might have inspired Raja to present great songs like iLaiya nilA pozhigiRadhu later. The whole troop of artistes was looking at Raja since the piece was a heart melting melody and a difficult one too. Raja took his guitar and just played a portion of it and stopped. When he looked up, the tears in his eyes were visible. While everyone stayed shocked Raja broke down. Co-artistes tried to cheer him up. Venkatesh, who was in the recording console, came to Raja and said the golden words which contributed to the reason that we have such greatest maestro for us in our times 'raja... compose yourself'. Some of you will be having the habit of reading the last line first to unveil any puzzle in posts like this and this lines are here to avoid such things. Reminding you again, don't even have a gesture that you knew a secret of the century.

:))))

thathvam: Life is a complicated Pallavi. Borrowing money is Loan. To repay that, you ask your friend for some money is AnuLoan. To settle that issue, scratching your head and asadu vazhinjing at in laws is PrathiLoan and as an 8th wonder, if you repay anyone of these it is ViLoan. #LifeIsAnRTP
