Malladi Bros- MA-27.12.12.-Gowrimanohari RTP

Post by grsastrigal »

In MA, everyone wants to showr full potential in his/her concert. RTP shows the portrayal of the uzhaippu. Ranjani & Gayatri’s RTP was outstanding, (I heard.) In line with this, a well structured RTP in GowrimanOhari was rendered by MBs in MA yeststerday.

Well prepard pallavi- line was

“dEEkshita vara Shyama ThyagarAjam bhajE Sangeetha sadhgurum sadA”

Covering all the trinities. Raga mAlika has a real pleasant suprise, They took ragas of pancharatna kritis, pancha boothalinga stala rAgAs of MD, swara jathi rAgAs of SS.
It was wonderful experience with EmbAr kannan returning this rAga mAlika ragas in the reverse order. Unfortunately the RTP itself was taken at 8.46 PM. So, some more volleys of this rAgA, tAnam were missing.

KV Prasad
EmbAr kannar
Udupi Sridhar-ghatam

1. Tulasi jagajjanani-sAvEri- Thyagarajar-2 min neraval in “caraNa yugambulu nadulaku parama vaikuNThamaTa” (s)
2. Ragam-Ananda bhairavi- 2 min-AnandESwarENa samrakshitOham- (Anandabhairavi)- (S).
3. Sub-main-ravikriya-Ragam- himagiri kumAri Eswari- MD= (s)
4. nAdhupai-madhyamAvathi-Thyagarjar
5. Main-kAmbohdi- “Sri raghuvara apamEya mAmava” –Thyagarjar -neraval in sitA nAthat tyAgarAja nutAnila sutApta sugunAbharana” (s)
6. Tani
7. RTP-GowrimanOhari (as said above)
8. chidambaramE ninai manamE-nAdanAmakriya- ?
9. adi dEVa paramAtma-sindubhairavi-annmAcharyA
All the kritis –the rendering and the return by embAr were very good. They could have avoided madhyamavathi so that they could have spent 5 min more on RTP
Tani took 15 minutes. KVP, matured mridangist shows the class in his tani along with ghatam vidwan.

I observed in all the concerts where ghatam was there- Ghatam vidwan did not throw up the ghatam at the end of the tani I don’t why ?

Grsastrigal.... You have been really quick in posting the list... I was going to post the concert spread of Malladi Brothers...but I see it here already :)

The sindhubairavi krithi was Adi deva...

The idea of the Gowrimanohari Pallavi was fabulous...and the ease with which both Sriram Prasad, Ravikumar and Kannan moved through the ragams was phenomenal...they never rushed any of the items in the concert.

I thought the kucheri was very thoughtfully planned and executed !

Vijaylakshmi- they rushed in RtP because of paucity of time. Gowri manohari Pallavi was finished in 4 minutes because of rAga malika swarams. If madyamavathi was not there, they could have taken 5 more minutes for pallavi. More words in a pallavi (like this palavi) will have to be rendered at least 10 minutes with 2nd kAlam, 3rd kAlam to make the RTP more decorated. No offence

R & G RTP in MA, has, unfortunately, not been discussed in this form which is very sad. She rendered more complicated RTP, I could not understand the nuances as I could not attend too. She is expected to bag the award for the best RTP. What I heard is each of them took different talams- “kanta triputa and tisra jampa”

Yesterday, I was discussing MB concert with Margazhi Bhajan team in Sringeri mutt, Mandaveli. Interestingly, one of the members made this point. For Tamil film lovers, it is a good one..

We remember the best song in Gowrimanohari is “pAttum nAnE” in the film tiruvilayAdal. I have not yet listened any other film song in this rAga, even if it is there, this much popularity would not have been there, because this song coupled with divine touch+Shivaji’s beautiful acting. Referring this, pugazhEndi, the assistant of KV MahAdEvan who music-directed this movie, explained this- “KVM stumbled upon finding a suitable tune to answer bAna bhatrar (balaiah/BMK)’s assault with 1+4 rAga kriti (oru nAl podhuma). Since this needs to be answered by Lord ShivA, it has to be better than balaiah’s song. BMK also made that song more soulful. Truly, KVM was in very bad shape for 6-7 days to find out the best tune to return. He thought to have 1+3 rAgA return like kalyAni+Mohanam+sindu bharivi and some other combination too (all bairavis-another choice) While doing this, A P NAgarAjan, the director insisted on jati to be part of this song, where he plays all the instruments with trick-shots of Shivaji Ganesan playing all these instruments. For jati, Sindubhairavi did not come out properly.

At this time, kaNNadAsan suggested gowrimamOhari for this by saying this would take care of all rasAs including jati. rAgA also has the rasA to make the world to stop, start and cry etc.(nAn asaindhal asaiyum akilam ellAmE..). KVM partly accepted it but APN did not accept.

(Here comes the beauty)- After few days, APN happened to attend a concert of somu (he likes only somu’s concert)
much. Though KVM (GNBian) was reluctant but agreed to accompany him. On that day, somu blasted with beautiful GowrimanOhari-gurulEkha with detailed rAgA and breathtaking swarAs for an hour. APN almost fainted listening to this and rushed back and hugged kannadAsan for excellent forethought of picking this raga. KVM too was very happy. Within 15 minutes, kaNNadAsan made the pallavi line and entire song was tuned and finalised within 3 hours.......

Rest is history.

What to say about this ?

very interesting, GRS. Thanks for the story about the song.
When watching the video from "tiruvilayadal" I have sometimes been reminded of Madurai Somu's gurulekha (and what a mindblowing, soul stirring way he sings it).

* Ravi kumar (Younger) was his scholarly best in "Apiprayams" while handling raga elaboration of Ravikriya 42&GOwri manohari. Embar was excelling. Nice to watch Ravi kumar's son (miniature of Ravikumar )serving both the brothers from the flask besides attentive throughout the concert. Less than ten years from now I am sure, We will see this lad performing on the centre stage.Unlike in what We witness in HYD Bros (Rasikas have started telling it is the concert of "Hyd Brother!" or call the other brother as Pin pattu) Malldi Bros share the platform judiciously. :!:

This was by far the most energetic RTP performance I have seen.

The 3 talas were khanda triputa, tisra jhumpa (tisra nadai) and sankeerna chaapu (all 9 aksharas).

The girls weaved their way back and forth through these talas with utmost ease and it was indeed riveting all the way through.

PS: They did take a break to announce this right in the middle of singing the pallavi and I think this could have been avoided.

* When Gowri manohari was being elaborated I was wondering is there any HM eqivalent of Gowri manohari. When I met Ravikumar later he told me there is "Patdeep"but it is not sampoorna........ *The Hindu review-The Malladi Brothers had everything going for them and they proved their mettle. The mridangam was the saving grace in an otherwise loud performance of the Mysore duo. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam’s concert was marked by discipline. G. SWAMINATHAN
There are several factors that go in favour of the Malladi Brothers ; their baritone but pleasant voice, clear diction and articulation, internalisation of the songs and perfection in delivery. These qualities have brought them popularity among both the commoner and the connoisseur. The concert under review offered several moments of sheer aural pleasure.

Tyagaraja’s ‘Tulasi Jagajjanani’ with short niraval swaras on ‘Saranayugambulu’ set the concert rolling. This was followed by the Anandabhairavi essay for Dikshitar’s ‘Anandeswaraena’ again with a few rounds of swaras. Three ragas were dealt with in detail -- Ravikriya, Khambodi and Gowri Manohari.

The positively tricky Ravikraiya treatise was expertly developed by Ravi Kumar, through the smart handling of the vivadi swaras-laden Melaraga (Raghupriya, 42) would have kept many guessing as such ragas create a vague picture of adjacent ragas and their suddhamadhyama counterparts. Luckily, the duo made the announcement and were wise enough to use the arohanam and avarohanam dazzlingly in kalpanaswaras for Dikshitar’s ‘Himagiri Kumari Eswari.’

Khambodi, with its inherent royal gait, started off first from Sriram Prasad and the second segment with higher trajectories, went to Ravi Kumar. It was a lengthy and substantial elaboration by the siblings who explored the range of the domineering raga to its fullest. Their selection was Tyagaraja’s ‘Sri Raghuvara Aprameya’ which has a different structure from the normal kriti format, with myriad sangatis in the pallavi. The brothers chose ‘Seethanatha Tyagarjanutha’ for niraval and the important point is they took the entire line for niraval without splitting it.

The duo had to rush through a bit in RTP in Gowri Manohari where it was Ravi Kumar who expanded the raga with greater emphasis on melody. His upper region approaches were imaginative, eloquent and engaging. The tanam was a quickie and the pallavi ‘Dikshita Vara Syama Tyagarajam Bhaje Saneetha Sadguru Sada’, in Kanda Jathi Triputa talam, a tribute to the Trinity, profound in content, not damp but the artists had to dash through due to time factor.

Embar Kannan on the violin proved his melodic intelligence while playing ragas and swaras, and in fact, his reply at one point in Gowri Manohari garnered a huge applause from the audience, quite unexpected but well deserving.

A special mention must be made about the percussion artists K.V. Prasad (mridangam) and Udipi Sridhar (ghatam). It would have sounded almost like a self effacing act by both during the renditions because there was hardly any overpowering or noisy intervention from them at any stage. The tani too was soft and slow, and rounded off with a touch of class.
