V.Sankaranayanan @ MA - 30-12-'12 - Live
Accompanists
Anayampatti Venkatasubramaniam
Erode Nagaraj
B.Venkatramanan (k)
Started with slokam "vakra thunda". Second line sounded like "guru mey deva". May be he is incorporating guru vandana also.
Now kanbodhi ata tala varnam. Lighting on stage seems to have a problem & percussion section sitting in the dark.

Violinist requests for the single bright light on stage showing off his sparkling whites to be switched off & joins the rest in dim & dreary lighting.
A nice sahana alapana in progress.

Annoying mike feedback surfaces loudly again. Must be lunch time for sound engineer because the same thing almost marred Sandeep Narayan's concert few days ago.

Seemed like he wanted to demonstrate sruthi bedham around 'ni' but changed his mind. Mandra sthayi sancharas sounding very nice.

The music academy is an intimidating platform that too often does not bring out the best from the performers, esp. tyros

More impressions, Suresh? The good, the bad, the accompanists?
I do agree with you about the MA - few of my memorable concerts were sung there. I think that despite its good acoustics, it just doesn't offer the intimacy between the artiste and rasikas that a hall like, say, Raga Sudha offers. Another sabha whose concerts I have generally enjoyed is the Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha.

YOU are correct in your observations above. Actually I can state that the BEST CONCERTS by the GREATS IN THE FIFTIES & SIXTIES took place OUTSIDE the so called major sabhas and in many instances OUTSIDE Madras. I have discussed with most of them why this happened and (without starting another storm in a tea cup) almost to a person they opined that the "Stuffiness" of the organisations, The overbearing nature of the Office bearers, and unnnecessary restrictions- there have been many instances like closing the curtain before the alloted time came etc- and the one person who took REVENGE was Flute Mali who started for a concert ( the organisation had sent a car along with a person to make sure he did not bolt) & bolted on the way! etc are some of the reasons given. Given the choice many of them would have preferred NOT to sing in these famous locales.....bilahari wrote:More impressions, Suresh?

Even this year at a famous location there is a discussion (in another thread)about how very senior artists were treated (or manhandled?) during a Lec/Dem. However I WISH to openly state that the one official I want to say who is setting a PROPER example is Sri.N.Murali who not only revived the M.A. from the death bed but has instituted many wonderful initiatives to correct Injustices from the past even.....VKV

I felt it was mediocre all the way through. Just left me with the feeling that the performers were not yet ready for prime time!bilahari wrote:More impressions, Suresh? The good, the bad, the accompanists?
Andolika RTP would be my pick of the concert. It was crammed in and lasted about 15 minutes.

I was passing by and took in the sahAna and some of the kalyAni. The sahAna was very appealing to me. Though there was that moment ofa lyrical slip, Shankar quickly remedied it.
I see a promising serious musician in him. Every year, I see that he is advancing.
Nagaraj provided solid accompaniment it seemed. A pity, I couldn't stay for the tani.
Bilahari,
Missed you this season. Mine was a pleasant one, and I met a number of rasikAs too. Missed you at the music session at Ramki's place. You would have loved it. I missed meeting several others I meant to see, a short illness and other factors ruled it out
Did anyone else attend this concert? Hope we get more input, considering that two among us rasikAs were performing.
Sureshvv,
Wish I had met you too,
Now, hope this review doesn't become a discussions of topics other than the concert itself, as it seems to be happening this season. Our reviews are read by many for the song list and for impressions too. Hope many other reviews come in, keeping the focus on concerts, not straying into other topics ever so easily. Of course, in the General Discussions section, they will catch our attention more where they can be discussed--and a reference to what one wants to say (thoughts, ideas and opinions which come up during a particular concert) can be pointed out in the review itself.
No. I don't want to stray away from this review any more
Earlier, did hear Shankar's concert (most of it) at Partha and liked it very much.

Interesting discussions tend to stray organically and we should boldly follow where they may take us, Don't you think?arasi wrote:

Yes and no.
Yes, because they are spontaneous and interesting discussions unfold and we continue them.
No, if the discussion becomes lengthy and spawns sub-discussions which may go on for a while and may not remain related to the heading of the thread after a while.
May be it's me, but I notice this confluence quite often these days.
Let's suppose that I happen to mention a particular style of sari worn by a vocalist--wondering if it's from Orissa, Bengal or Andhra. Then someone chimes in: that particular motif is typical of blah blah village in the district of some place which boasts of such distinct prints which...
That's yards and yards of saris to unravel before we find the review and responses!
That's my drift.
Before I drift away, let me stop. If not, I may inadvertently sabotage this thread

You are right! What has the style of sari got to do with music?
