T M Krishna @MA Jan 1 2013

Post by hema »

This concertof TMK's I really enjoyed. Most of the concert was in vilambha kaalam, a large part of his improvisations were
in madhya, mandara stayi.
The list:
Varnam: Bhairavi -- apparently a pada varnam -- towards end had ragamalika chittai swarams (I heard a mohanam, kambodi).
Sankarabharanam: nagalingam bhajeham
Dhanyasi: Dalachina vaaru
Atana: thiruvattriyur tyagarajan -- the alaap was really beautiful. I would have liked more swara prasthara.
Raagam: Kalyani, Surati and Anandhabhairavi -- this was simply brilliant. I think I am beginning to understand what he means when he
states "I have nothing more to sing." after the outstanding alaap. But perhaps an RTP could have been done here.
dhenuka: Teliyaleru raama
Khamaas: Marubari tala
Tani: this was a bit odd -- simply by itself???
Viruttam: Thandai thayum: todi, kambodi, sree
Manji: Varugalaamo ayyaa

Manoj Siva's accompaniment was superb. R K S was great in his own right. There was no work for Anirudh, though.

Thanks Ms Hema for the nice review.
Can anyone give more details on this varnam? The composer, lyrics?

This concert was kind of unidimensional but was quite enjoyable. Very high on melody (the number of classical carnatic ragas that were elaborated) and lyrical diversity(composers, language). It was sedate on the laya front, not much variety.

The rendering of the anupallavi and the final charanam of the varnam was beautiful. Brief sankarabaranam alapana was followed by a fine rendering of nagalingam bhajeham. A nice dhanyasi alapana and good rendering of dalachina vaaru followed. The first three pieces which took more than an hour was quite nice and i was hearing all of them for the first time :-) . I expected that he would change the tempo from then on but did not. At the end of the concert, i thought it was like a Tendulkar knock some years back where he did not hit a single ball in the air. R K Shriram Kumar was as usual fantastic in his returns and i like the fact that T M K and RKSK have a special bond and play as equals in their concerts.

The tani was at the end of the teliyaleru rama and was not a stand alone item.

The viruttam rendering was enjoyed by the audience ( i am not a tamilian), the ragamalika was nice. varugalaamo was rendered in a very slow manner.

I am disappointed that the concert didn't start with a mangaLam and end with a varNam :(

I am disappointed that he did not sing "Born this way" composed by Lady Gaga :-(
