6. Laavanya ramA (S) - poornashadjam - T

The sabha kalakruthi has its usually poor acoustics. The sankara hall adds perenially its share of echo .Most of the times in the past after few songs , I have always seen musicians re-adjusting the mikes and speakers to give a better experience . But Unfortunately OST never adjusted and just went on. Particularly when he sang the alapana for the main krithi, he moved forward and sang closer to mike, atleast from that point there was better audible experience.

OST as a musician always keeps an intense traditional course for his concert , at times when it is excessively traditional route , I find myself losing a flare of spontaneous creativity. OST started with a brief krithi of nagaswarali, his voice did open out well, had difficulty in hearing him continously . The next abhOgi was sung very well , it is ages since I heard this AbhOgi- manasunilpa kriti. OST sang with a nice kAlapramanam with both the accompanist really maintaining the tempo,

The submain was SS krithi - birAna varalichi and he sang well .The neraval was quite exciting but the swaras were bit too short. The filler was rare , he did not announce the rAgA and at the end of the concert I heard him saying the rAgA mAnOranjani. It was not Atu kagaradani, but had some lines like telibella and thyagaraja mudra, it was so difficult to hear the words that he was singing.

Then there was another two krithis of T in mukhari and poornashadjam , and I was certainly missing an alapana in the concert . While mukhari was just short , the poornashadjam was very good with a dash of swaras. Overall atleast till the 6th number , I found the concert more of a presentation of T krithis in quick successsion in a paddantharized parade.boredom indeed was settling without an alapana.

7A. dAcukO valenO (R N S T) - tOdi - T
11 mins alapana , 6 mins violin return
neraval in "saumitri tyAgarAjuni " for 8 mins
7 mins swaras
7B. tani for 10 mins

9. pAhi pAhi jaganMohana krishna - nAdanAmakriya - NT
10. uyyAlaluga vaiyyA - neelAmbari - T

11. tungA teera viharam - salagabhairavi - kamalesha vittala
12. pAhi rAma - vasantavarAli - T
13. nee nAma rupamulaku - sowrashatram - T

Todi main atlast gave us an alapana. He sang very well, the alapana ,krithi rendition were all following strictly the traditional paddhantara. Certainly missed a more detailed neraval and swaras.Overall todi was very enjoyable. Post tani in the fillers nAdanAmakriya was superb, infact it was the best number of the concert was the NT tarangam. His voice and with few karvais was aesthetically too good in nadanAmakriya. In the tukkadas, I was missing a slokham / viruththam .He sang his usually repetitive neelAmbari krithi of thyagaraja (uyyAlaluga ). Rest of the tukkadas(salagabhairavi and vasantavarali) was just ok , fillers for the clock to strike 08:30 pm .

Mullaivasal chandramouli played very well, there was quite a touch of melody and his todi return was impressive. The mridangist thyagarajan(I think his full name is chennai s thyagarajan) was good .IIRC, I am hearing the mrudangist for the first time

OST in my opinion takes a conscious choice of paddantara tradition which is good that too with his really well polished voice. But strategically he always goes with way too many sadguru thyagaraja krithis ,I miss a kind of losing a more complete aesthetic package in a concert.

Atleast in this concert with few less drops of T, and a drop of Dikshitar and especially viruththam/slokham would have brought more charm. Also not even singing one thamizh number was bit difficult to have a sustained attention, infact as I walked out one regular member whom i did not know was just passing that statement to me .Also wrapping sharp at 08:30 PM despite a late 10 mins start at 06:40 pm, was quite disappointing.

Overall a good to very good concert .
