Padma Awards

Post by gnb »

I casually browsed through the Padama awards and if I am not much mistaken, no Carnatic musician is featured. This is deplorable. I can come with a dozen names that deserve the award. It is all the same symptom of "king makers" vs others. This seems to be the case with science too. See the following link that proves my point.

the link is not the correct one...and are you sure Smt. Janaki was trained in CM? IIRC, the only CM trained female playback singers of those days (other than Smts. DKP, MSS, MLV, NCV) were Ms. P. Leela, and Smt. P Susheela.

Didn't think she was CM trained either.

There is a fine Wikipedia article about S. Janaki. Looks more like a naturally gifted singer than a classically trained one.

Her vocal callisthenics are on display in this song, directed by L. Vaidyanathan: http://raa.ag/t110251

Sorry for the error. The correct link is posted by Bilahari.
She is a distant relative and has stated timeand again that she has received CM training in her childhood.
She never made a concert appearance however..
She has rendered several CM songs in movies and elsewhere too..
(you have forgotten KBS in your list of oldtimers!)

Before attacking me, see the following link. Janaki has declined her award. There are so many deserving artists in South India, it is an insult. By the way can some one tell me how to post the links correctly so that you can just click on it?

GNB,
The opinions from musicians seems to indicate many unexpressed 'dissatisfactions'. As everyone knows Govt. awards are driven by politics and connections. At a minimum there is seems to be some hiatus between TN and Central govt 'powers'.

Its really sad that south indians are not given due recognition. But would like to share.......I have been living outside Chennai for long in the north, and when I say I am a South Indian to any person belonging to the north, they say 'madrasi'. For them, all south indians are Madrasis. Many dont know the difference between andhra, karnataka, kerala and tamil nadu. The only south indian names famous all over India are Idli and Dosa. And here they are most interested in knowing how to make idlis, dosas, sambhar at home........as if there is some deep trade secret in it..... wish they get to know more about south India. Ofcourse, some know a lot about our culture and places. But overall, the knowledge is poor about south India, many citing language problem to come down south.......

Guys - grow up - this is not new. The great MSG got Padma Bhushan only last year, probably because he became a octogenarian. RKS became one the year before, probably because he became a nonagenarian. Well, I think Ramani is still a PadmaSri and I guess many other greats don't even have a Padma award - you see they don't have connections especially with Delhi. LGJ and TNK are still only Padma Bushans. I can roll out a list of Padma awardees in other fields whom IMHO may not hold a candle but am sure I will get flamed.

My understanding is that the nominations/recommendations for the Padma awards are to be forwarded by the state governments.

Come to think of it. The Padma awards is only worth the paper it is written on. The Govt of India clearly states this
'The Padma awards is not an award. It is a recognition of the services rendered by individuals. It may not be used as a title or used in front of a name in business cards. If any one does that, the recognition can be revoked.
In other words, we can not introduce some one as Padma Bushan XYZ or Padma Bibushan ABC. These titles should not be mentioned in any fliers or announcements either.
Given these restrictions, who cares for the "Padma Awards", sorry, "Padma recognitions"?
Check Govt of India Home Ministry web page.

India is a large country and we are a culture driven by awards and titles. Brahmarshi and so on.
Padma awards are given by govt. babus through a recommendation process.
You need to curry favours.
There will be anamolies.
So what!?
That's life.

Sometime in the 1970s, Palghat Mani Iyer's name was announced as a recipient of Padma Bhushan. His son Rajamani gave him the news. The maestro asked, "apDInnA ennadu?" (what does it mean?).

Rajamani: It is an award given by the Govt of India. Remember you got the Padma Sri some years ago.
Mani Iyer: Oho, what should I do then?
Rajamani: You must go to Delhi to receive the award.
Mani Iyer: I won't go.

And the maestro didn't go to receive the Padma Bhushan. Now, the Govt does not leave it at that. They sent the Padma Bhushan certificate to Mani Iyer by post. Rajamani showed it to him and said, "This is the Padma Bhushan award.

Mani Iyer: Oho, paper nannAyirukkE ('The paper is nice'). Do one thing. There is an old newspaper in that cupboard over which I have kept my vEShTTis. Throw that paper away and keep this paper and place the vEShTTis over that.

That is all these awards deserve.

Good story, RaviSri.
Would be nice if the performers who think no end of awards stop in their tracks and give it all a thought.
All those endless shawls, framed certificates and loooong speeches are not worth our while, they may think, at least for a moment.

We rasikAs who happen to be their well-wishers like to see them perform in fuller halls for a considerable amount of time. We do not like to see the time tick away during the honoring rituals and long speeches which leave very little time for a concert.

Something about Padma awards. First the State Govt should recommend & send your name to Centre. Then there must be someone to lobby for you at the centre at the time of shortlisting. Karunanidhi was the Chief Guest for "Semmangudi 80" function. After blabbering on his usual theme of Brahminism Vs Brahamins, he said he was responsible for Semmangudi getting Padma awards since State has to recommend the name. My God Semmangudi's name had to be recommended by Karunanidhi :( For information MDR & KVN(my father) were recommended by Kerala Government at the request of Dr V K Narayana Menon for Padma Sri. TN Govt refused recommend their name in 1975. That is how it works. Carnatic Musicians should forget about Padma awards. I hope Music Academy under Murali will honour all worthy artists with Sangita Kalanidhi at the right time. Who will get it next year? Any guess.

True artists like Mani Iyer probably derive(d) more satisfaction from the work they do than the recognition they get for it. Everyone knows that in India all awards and recognitions are politically motivated. Look at the current situation with Kamalahasan movie. Even to work and reach it to an audience is a struggle with all these jokers ruling our nation.

No problem with this. But I thought to get a Sangeetha Kalanidhi, you should be old enough to be carried in a wheel chair or with a pair of oxygen tubes stuck in your nose.

If suggestion/prediction in #20 comes true, the price of make-up materials and jasmine will skyrocket . Look at her even in the Thiruvayru Aradhana video.

The focus has shifted from the "Padma" award to the coveted SK award. I LOVE IT!!!

My guesses for this year's SK would be one of TVG, GD, KRM, THV(all percussion) and VVS (violin). Can't think beyond these five.

Hope nobody in the forum tells me that one/few of them have already been awarded the Sangita Kalacharya ;)
