Ode to the Obnoxious
Ode to the Obnoxious
Oh you scums that come in late,
And amble pompously to front-row seats,
Throwing broad smiles, snooty glances,
and looking propahly bored throughout!
Don't bloat when musicians bow to you.
Don't gloat as sabha cronies scrape to please you.
Take your business elsewhere and spare us your presence.
Throw your weight without a care, but spare us this excrescence.
If you want to cultivate culture, mend your manners.
Bring in your bourgeoisie bums, but without banners.
Avoid your antics, crass officious intents, and irresistible
Sudden cellphone urges. Or evaporate into thin air.
Those with weak bladders, wear adult diapers. If the music
Bothers you, amuse yourself outside with tepid pakodas.
Music halls need decorum, you're not here for whiskey and rum.
We, seated at the back, would like to give you a real smack.
Remember, those 'Reserved' placards on your seats
Look like they're from the coffin house.
You're anyway walking dead in concerts.
God save our music.

Excellent, Rsachi.
Unfortunately, these bad behavers are often musicians and even senior members of the music world. This gives me little hope for the future.
Here's something from me for the theory books of the future:

Of course, I'd like to claim that as valid excuse for being a regular 2nd-song arriver --- but the truth is that I'm often just plain late. And the less said about my bladder the betterVarnam ... The part of the concert during which people arrive and VIPs meet and greet in front of the stage. Also the time during which sound engineers make their early attempts at setting levels.

What outrageous blabber my friend
We're Royalty the sabhas must bend
We pay them in sums handsome
Without us they are sure to be lonesome
The artistes are at our call and command
If not no more trips to the promised land
We ask them do you want in Rupees or Dollar
"Dollar! Dollar! They incessantly holler"
We hold the Season under our whips
No more such prattle or quips
Sanctity of CM died back ago a century
If you want it go visit the mortuary

Re: Ode to the Obnoxious
Come, come!
To a mortuary, my friend?
au contraire--a dead cat
Throbs with life in the pocket
Of our mystery man--a big cat himself!
And concerts do live on, merrily--
Even 'dollar'ously, I agree--so it be
Wish you could see the grandeur
Of some CM related affairs at home--
And you'd wish all that money spent
On those extrAs ('extarv's?) reach the pockets
Of those who practice the art of CM!
CM is alive and well
We need to check its pulse
Every now and then--that's all

Re: Ode to the Obnoxious
Sorry Rsachi.
The poem of CML post 8 reveals the REAL formidable power of the dollar attraction.I am wondering whether we can harness this to bring about a sort of revolution.
1-No doubt the dollar powers are genuinely interested in spreading and promoting CM overseas.Language is of no consideration for them,. Suppose they rechristen their festival as simply music festival or OVK festival or Bharathy festival?. After all T is as alien to US or Australia as is OVK or Bharathy.
2-Our younger generation vidwans like Sanjay , Neyveli, Sowmya or Sashikiran etc. who are already unearthing new tamil compositions would have no difficulty in pursuing their jobs.
3 -Skype music lessons would also turn a new page and focus on tamil compositions. and this will increase tamil conversations at home by way of explanations to songs.
4- May be it would bring a little solace to the situation envisaged in தமிழ் இனி மெல்ல சாகும் thread
5- what the tamil isai movement could not achieve in TN could be achieved outside .

Oh, sorry, misunderstanding here.
I have no problems with Dollars, or Dinars, or Drachmas.I object to crass asses. That's all.
"Money without culture stinks. Culture without money starves."

I don't have the patience, time or the energy to refute many of the FALSEHOODS interspersed in the statements above.
I say this as one of the co-founders or major supporters & participants of the BHARATHI Society, Tamil Sangam, Tagore Society, Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival & several ofthe EFFORTS to give ENORMOUS IMPORTANACE TO LAnguages & their propagation, importance since 1960 in North America.
"Language is of no consideration for them" etc is TOTALLY WRONG & INSULTING TO THE FEELINGS & EFFORTS of Many who have done their best to further things. VKV
