Radio- the greatest thing that happened to Carnatic Music

Post by Rsachi »

A country of 1.3 billion people, many in corners unreachable by land air or water can listen to and enjoy the best of Carnatic music. Whatever instrument or voice, is recorded with fidelity. The announcers show respect for the artistes and the composers. They make you want to listen to it more and more.

Sick people, old people, poor people, uneducated people, unhappy people, drunks and derelicts, derive a connection with the best of Indian culture instantly. 24x7.

Artistes don't need to supplicate to Sabha secretaries. They need no guru recommendations. They can be handicapped, infirm, poor, ugly, incapable of selling themselves. All they need is to do well in the audition, and find their way up.

Famous musicians who want to navigate the popularity charts, who want to guide public tastes, who want to pay their tributes to their inspirations, can do so in an emphatic way, with reach and impact like no other medium.

Students who want to learn new krithis, understand the maestros, study the great composers, can do so. Almost at no cost.

Can we say Thank You enough to All India Radio? It is the modern avatar of devarshi Narada.

"nArada bittida dhareyoLage".

Radio (AIR) is the only 'Credit Rating' agency available for Carnatic Musicians and its ratings are accurate, by and large.

Sir, kindly enlighten people like me who may be ignorant of that aspect. I only know of Sri S. Rajam as a gifted personality.

Dear R,
I will try as S.Rajam is such a colossus (having followed and interacted with him since 1950's) in EVERY AREA he touched. He was one of the FEW Artists I know of who did not use P.R.Techniques to PUBLICISE himself. I can make the statement that very few like ARI, GNB, MMI etc whose recognition was as a result of PUBLIC & EXPERTS belonged in this category. In S.Rajam's case I can HONESTLY state that he was a man of ACTION and did not have time to talk about himself unless asked specifically.......Those interested in knowing more about the PERSON OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY regarding Arts of especially South India should get the Swathisoft's excellent DVD recently released........
In terms of AIR Madras DKP's was the first broadcast concert of AIR Madras followed by S.Rajam's concert next day. Since that day till he retired as Producer from AIR after at least six decades he was SINGULARLY RESPONSIBLE for so many innovations and presentations that AIR presented to the public. This forum is not the appropriate place for describing his contributions to Carnatic Music in Twentieth Century due to limitations of various kinds.....
Simply put having been disciple of Ambi Dhikshithar-great grandson of Muthuswamy Dhikshithar-, ARI, MMI, PAPANASAM SIVAN and heard Dhanammal,Kanchipuram Nayina Pillai, all the famous Nadaswaram Artists of all time like Chinna Pakkiri etc he was THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY. Plus he was willing to spend time and explain the SUBTELTIES in details to ANyONE who asked him. In short he was in the equivalent Category of Mahatma Gandhi not getting Nobel Prize etc.......
Apart from correcting practically any artist who performed in AIR and this includes the TOP performers he introduced various new programs like Koteeswara Iyer's 72 melakartha compositions,Teaching Dhikshithar's Navagraha kritis in AUTHENTIC Padantharam, teaching them to not just the public but to leading vidwans themselves; Plus special programs like the one on Kapaleeswarar Temple etc. I can boldly state that the ORIGINS of practically the new innovations in terms of composers and compositions that we take for granted today and which many musicians have taken credit for are in fact TRACEABLE to S.Rajam. He himself has said he could do this because he CHOSE not to become what is commonly called "Plaform Music" Performer (whose exploits and greatness is elevated to Genius status obsessively in Forums like these) but instead CONCENTRATE on bringing it to the public's attention through forums like AIR etc. VKV

Dear R,
YOU HAVE PERFORMED THE GREATEST SERVICE AN INDIVIDUAL CAN DO IN PROVDING THE LINK ABOVE. I urge EVERY MEMBER of this Forum to see this excerpt and also peruse the section on the DVD so ably produced by Sri. Lalitha Ram on S.Rajam. I am aware of the time, efforts, and scarifices he made in producing this DVD AND URGE any one interested or involved with our FINE ARTS -music, painting etc- to buy theDVD & get educated on what the highlights of the Twentieth Century have been......
From age six till two days before he passed away in 2010 S.Rajam was the moving hand & vioce that wrote & presented new ideas continuously creatively LIKE Einstein and Chandrasekar (both of whom worked till their last hour on Earth- last 1 minute in the case of Chandraseekar)....In my opinion humanity's hope for betterment can occur with a few more Rajams......VKV

Thanks Sachi. Wow, what a great man!
What he says towards the end around 15:58 to 16:15 is quite profound and sincere.

I also liked Ananda Rao's nasal voice welcoming listeners from Australia, England etc. after tea break in test matches.
And the famous voice of Amin Sayani announcing Binaca Geet Mala...(that's radio Ceylon sorry)
And RK Srikantan waking us up with Geetaaraadhana...
And the hockey Hindi commentary of Jasdev Singh, whose voice would move with fluency of words and grace of expression as fast as the ball...

Living in Chennai has so many advantages, especially listening to carnatic music on the radio. And today i happened to listen to my favorite vocalist Gayathri Girish on radio. I love the Kaanada kriti Maamava Sadaa Janani and was delighted to listen to Gayathris rendition. Is there any chance to get a recording or a link to todays concert ?

Priyaram, you might want to try the rasikapriya/sangeethamshare discussion group for updates. People like TVG upload a lot of radio broadcasts to their site.

Chennai (A) which produces perhaps the largest number of carnatic music prorammes is certainly a boon for CM lovers.
However I could find that people having AM radio frequency in their sets are sparse. CM lovers largely depend on uploads in the net thanks to a few like sangeethapriya. Though FM Gold Chennai (102.3) broadcasts CM the slots, are getting 'diluted' of late. Not a single Mobile phone supports AM frequency now!
CM lovers seem to be happy with recordings. Surprisingly AIR Ragam (DTH) is not that popular with CM lovers.
Those who listen to radio slots of contemporary artists include only the artists, close relatives and friends.
I had been to a 'radio shop' recently. No system had AM frequency!
Anybody could help, please?

Eesha, was about to do a similar search myself...thx the Rs 890 model has more bands and power than the Rs.1250 one.
I have had these multiband MW/SW portable radios for many years.. Just love the worldwide babel one can catch on those short waves. The MW frequencies 530, 612, 720 kHz were all imprinted on the mind for CM.
There are many Internet radio apps like Shoutcast etc (my favourite is Tune-IN where you can record too!) where one can catch digitized time-shifted broadcasts from hundreds of stations. I think the list features at least some Vividhbharati stations.
