There was a 45 minute children's group singing before Swarna Rethas concert.

The children who participated in this group singing programme were extremely well coordinated and perfectly trained with good sruthi and laya control. Song selection was very thoughtful as it covered a wide range of vaggeyakkaaras. Also, different thaalas were employed for each song. This added colour and beauty to the entire presentation.

Swarna Rethas is endowed with a good booming voice and he presented a wholesome treat during the occasion. His grip on carnatic music was well demonstarted by the range of manodharma sangeetham that he could employ effortlessley. The elaboaration of the ever green Balagopaala in Bhairavi was delightful. Interestingly, being the disciple of sanjay Subrahmanyan he hardly sang any of his guru's popular songs but chose a completely different set, thus distinguising himself and demonstarting a different dimension of the same school of music.

Swarna Rethas is serious in his demeanor and is a serious musician. A pity, I missed his concerts this season.
As for the song list, yes, he has a few krutis there which his guru isn't singing these days, but Sri rAga varNam, appa rAma bhakthi, sAmOdam chinthayAmi, kAlaith thUkki and kaNDu dhanyanAde speak of a chElA who has benefited by playing the thamburA (and listening to his guru), apart from lessons!

Varnam in Sri ragam and Kaalai Thooki (is this not a MASTER special) are definite SANJAY specials. And also the KAPI Tillana could be the one which the MASTER sang couple of weeks back at Asthika Samajam where Rethas was present.
