Smt. Mala Chandrasekhar at Cleveland on 2nd April 2013

Post by hamirkalyani123 »

Sikkil Smt. Mala Chandrasekhar (Flute)
Smt. Ranjani Ramakrishnan (violin)
Dr David Nelson (mridangam)
Sri N. Guruprasad (ghatam)

1. Kedaragowla varnam
2. Siddhivinayakam, Mohanakalyani
3. GNB composition in Amrita behag
4. Rangapuravihaara, Brindavan Saranga
5. composition in kuntalavarali (not sure what composition as I had stepped out in between)
6. Sarojadalanetri, Sankarabharanam
7. Sakhiprana, Javali

A pleasant concert with Sankarabharanam alapana by Smt. Mala and the alapana by Smt. Ranjani for brindavan sarang standing out. Sounded much like a hindustani elaboration of brindavan sarang which you normally hear from the likes of Dr. N. Rajam etc. I believe she has some connections to that family of violinists apparently.

Nice to see a american playing mridangam from wesleyan university, Connecticut. I understand he is a indirect disciple of Palani Subramanya Pillai with his immediate guru being T. Ranganathan. He was also given a Kala Seva Mani award by aradhana committee.

Dr. Nelson has also been teaching students to play mrudangam at Wesleyan for several decades, after learning it from T.Ranganathan there.
