It was a 2 hour concert organized in a temple in GST road close to tambaram sanotorium. This is the first time I am to this temple and the sabha .

suryaprakash started wonderfully in shanmughapriya with a brief very open throated alapana , barring few tweeeeeeech sounds of the microphone during few avarthanas in swaras, the concert did start well in shanmughapriya. The next harikAmbodhi , a kind of rare number and it was brisk , felt he sang very well but not topping with swaras or neraval in #2 , bit put me off and I was not that excited in hari kAmbOdhi.

The 3rd in asaveri was an extraordinary rendition. The alapana was very very concise and there was a very lovely nayanam like piDi and when he started with the anupallavi line "viri kaDal veNdan thiru vaDi aDaiNthEn" and then looping to "sharanam sharanam raghurAma" pallavi line it was really very very melliflous. Asaveri had a lot of oomph effect and kind of comparable when one hears say a mukhari krithi enraikku siva kripai that too when the start was with anupallavi line kanrin kuralai kettu . IIRC shri kVN sang this particular asaveri krithi so soulfully and perhaps suryaprakash took a leaf from that.

The slow krithi passed and then fast was evident and it was a paramapurusha in vasanta , rollicking speed and swaras for nearly 4 mins was really well presented. I was thinking with shanmughapriya as a prathi batsman already back in the pavilion , it will be some big number in sudda madhyamam. But it was melakartha 65. kalyani started with its usual lazy style and slumber and then some very good madhyamakala touch in alapana was well received more by the audience with few rounds of applause . The krithi was brisk with he giving lot of time for neraval and swaras and it was definitely well presented by Suryaprakash. Few kaarvai with some astounding beats by srimushnam did keep me very engrossed in kalyani, despite this raga being one of a kind which generally does not interest me..

I was thinking that after a nice kApi krithi ,may be that was a filler before the pallavi. At the same time I was also seeing the temple authorities were kind of giving visual signs of perhaps closing the doors of few dieties . Will a pallavi come with some anjaneya mudra was my thinking then, but it was a brief slokham on raghavendra and a lovely thillana of srimushnam in sindhubhairavi. I am not sure if I have heard any thillanas in the kannada language but it looks like srimushnam raja rao composed in language kannada and I think the thillana was in his istha devata swami rAghavendra.

I am hearing violinist H V raghuram , who is the disciple of shri LGJ for the first time. I certainly would prefer to have a better second impression. He was bit too timid and at times during rotation when raja rao was aggressive he fell aesthetically short . But however during alapana his bowing was adequate.

The percussion team kind of rocked . Srimushnam did produce lot of variations in patterns and at times his anjaneya balam did lift the concert .Thank god this temple had a lot of open air space atleast few idols had faced directly the sky perhaps acting as a good acoustic setup that suits bit aggressive players like rajarao sir.

While it was difficult for me to get everything in tani , but I noticed shankar in kanjira was thoroughly enjoying in return during tani . I particularly liked srimushnam sir's anticipation in the neraval segment of kalyani.

While pavamana was on ;) , I was bit pavamA nA off :( as it was just a 2 hour concert. Overall a very good concert for 2 hours.

Rajesh,
'kaikkeTTiyum vAikkeTTavillai' :( You got a nirvANA concert but did not reap the benefit of it! A short concert, indeed.

Didn't know Suryaprakash was already back in India! SrimushNam's fine playing (and sound) would have kept him awake, if he were jet-lagged!

Anyhow, his Cleveland concert video is out. Look forward to listening to it this weekend.

THere was a brief speech by the organizers where he also mentioned that srimushnam raja rao sir had to travel and come back to chennai from bangalore by multiple means as there was a derailment of train near arakonam. So not only international jet lag of vocalist , but there was national jet lag for mrudangist. Personallly I consider travelling in local buses in the night creates more fatigue than even airplanes, but the team hardly showed any fatigue.kudos especially to raja rao sir, his mrudangam had so much of interesting patterns and zero fatigue.
