April 16, 2013. Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Bi centenary

Post by sweetsong »

Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam would have a live telecast in it's Naada Neerajanam at 6:00pm IST,
of a special concert commemorating the bi centenary of the birth of Maharaja Swati Tirunal Rama Varma.

This can be watched online at

http://bhoomtv.in/ttdtv.html

Prince Rama Varma, Avaneeswaram S.R.Vinu, B.Harikumar and Dr.S.Karthick present the concert.

Here are a few links from another Swati concert that Varmaji gave at Chennai recently where he talks
about his illustrious ancestor first and then about his illustrious accompanists.

I had been to the prog.on 13/04.Prince's speech was lucid & enjoyable.

The concert that followed was also equally enjoyable.

I hope they will upload videos from the singing too. Meanwhile the naadaneerajanam didn't get telecast as announced.
Later I caught the fag end of the concert on TTD after 9:00pm! The channel has been scrolling the information that they
would retelecast the concert at 9:30 in the morning tomorrow. (April 18th. Thursday.) Between work, powercuts and
technical snags from the channel, we have to be really lucky to catch something as planned.

Due to a well wisher's SMS alert, we could see the programme. Sri.Rama Varma was thoroughly enjoying himself. Brief speeches between songs were interesting. By his disarming innocent smile, he can easily get away with slightly controversial messages with ease. Interesting that he quoted Annamayya, that wealth and trouble go together; in the case of Venkateswara in Tirupati and Padmanabha of Tiruvananthapuram, too :) Wonder if it is true with erstwhile kings as well ;)

All three accompanying artists were excellent. Sri.Varma's voice is very soft, ideally suited, imho, for teaching and lecdems, especially with a nice sense of humour. (I attended his lec dem in bangalore on the same topic sometime back. His anecdotes on personal interactions with senior vidwans, past and present are really humorous)
