Venkatakailasam: Nice collection--thanks for the painstaking effort!! Just one of the reminiscences re: The Charukesi Varnam-circal eighties in my house in NY.
At our request to suggest
to Kamala Lakshman(who was our daughter's dance teacher) to teach the Charukesi varnam(LGJ told us that kamala had requested his permission for her to stage(for the first time in Chennai) to our daughter which he readily did immediately(he was visiting NY and was staying with us) and as kamala was also living in LI Ny. When my daughter did a demo of the Pallavi,he interjected saying how plaintive the Idhu Nyamama should be in Abhinaya-- Is it really fair-- athe mood becomes more plaintive when he sings-he was the best singer of his own compositions--he had put so much thought into the compositions--same thing in playing others' compositions--like Enna Thavam(kapi)--he will point us to the subtle nuances he had introduced in the end --one mood asking Yasodha--what great thing you have done in mock praise--enna perish chenjuttai--another plaintive mood--Nee Enna Thavam Seidirukke to beget krishna and a third Sangati in wonderment--what penance did you do to beget Krishna--- Listen to Saketharaman singing this piece in a you tube posting----this does not come out clearly in instruments and that was the reason he was very particular that any singer singing his song should honor the spirit he has put into his compositions --while he was not against improvisations of his compositions .

More to come-----

I will be thankful if somebody provides transliteration as I am not familiar with it..

VKailasam,
I took the liberty by keeping rAman and his vil together in quotes. Will change, if you wish. I liked the varNam bit too.

Arun,
Your transliteration works very well! You can't expect a robot to do any better.
Or, are you working on it for perfect results?

Viji Lalgudi in FB

Thank you all. He belongs to all, to everyone of us. Thank you for sharing your grief, your loss and your beautiful sentiments with me.

He lived music. He breathed music. A truly evolved soul. I ve only read about Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi. But I personally experienced...saw how he took his health condition. The detached way of receiving the ailments...it is only the body that suffers. I'm with music on a different elevated state....this message clearly came out the last 6 years. A sidha he was.

His eyes, his breath, his entire self was nothing but music. Last evening his ashes were immersed in the sea. And today his music is pouring down here in Chennai......

Once again thank you.....I am touched...

Embodiment of music......Biographer and rasika, Lakshmi Devnath shares her memories of Lalgudi Jayaraman. ...

" Time froze for Lakshmi Devnath, who was entering the ICU to see the ailing Lalgudi Jayaraman. “He is stable,” the nurse had told her at the doorway and seconds later the doctor came out to say he had expired. “I couldn’t believe it,” she says.

She has been working on the stalwart’s biography for the past few years and with the release almost fixed, was looking forward to the day but that is not to be. “No. It is not the spotlight I’m thinking of. He would have loved it. He worked as hard as I did on the book. Any detail I asked for, he would get it. He took my work so seriously, placing the book in his hands would have been the best gift or tribute that I could have paid him. I read the manuscript to him not once but three times. Yet, the release will never be the same without him.”

A grand tribute from Samyuktha Krishnan to her grandfather.
In the coming years, rasikas will see her blossoming in the art of her grandfather, father and other family members.

She's a very good writer too!

from the same tree...another branch...

Smt Padmavathy Ananthagopalan daughter of Shri Gopalaiyer..

Padmavathi was meticulously trained by her father, V R Gopala Iyer. She started performing at the young age of 12. She considers Padmabhushan Late Dr S Balachander as her Manasika Guru - her source of inspiration. He had sent her on a teaching assignment to Singapore for a period of 8 years, to work as a professor for vocal and veena, along with her husband, A S Ananthagopalan, who also worked as a professor for violin at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society.

She returned to India in 1983, and established a school exclusively for music in 1988 known as Sri Sadguru Sangita Vidyalaya, which has turned out highly proficient students during the past several years. This school is run at Anna nagar...

Born in a family where music runs in the blood, Jayanthi Kumaresh, niece of the violin legend Lalgudi G Jayaraman, is the disciple of her aunt Padmavathy Ananthagopalan. She followed the traditional Gurukula system of learning music and flowered into a concert artist at the age of 16.

Jayanthi had the rare privilege of being one of the select few disciples of veena virtuoso Dr S Balachander. Being one of his favorite disciples, she imbibed the innovative technicalities of his style of playing.

Jayanthi started her concert career playing with her guru Padmavathi Ananthagopalan. The duo performed widely all over India and abroad, fetching themselves rave reviews and acclaim.

"They hold monthly kutcheries in Chinamaya Vidhyalaya anna nagar. Maami is 80 years and Maama 92 years old. But still they take all efforts to conduct these kutcheris since there are no proper sabas in anna nagar and want to contribute their best to the field of music . They are looking forward to sponsors...

.We also want to have more people attend these kutcheirs. The entry ticket is priced only at rs 50. Except for about 50-75 people, attendence is quite low. These kutcheris are being advertised in Anna Nagar times...."

How many who even live in Anna Nagar know about these concerts!
Thank you for bringing this to the attention of rasikAs.

If TRS would come all the way from Anna Nagar to attend concerts in the Mylapore area, younger rasikAs could try and get there at least once in a while to catch a concert!

A happy musical journey....

"Lalgudi G. Jayaraman is no more, and his violin has taken its final bow, silencing the magnificent strings. Ailing for a while now, the veteran’s musical acumen and spirit never gave up, rising to create new compositions, and teaching."....

mysore palace concert .
Mind boggling . How these masters make the instruments sing .
In a manner that would give many voices an inferiority complex .
Hugo von Hofmannsthal once commented
Singing is near miraculous because it is the mastering of what is otherwise a pure instrument of egotism: the human voice.
These instrumentalists have such an advantage to start with .... :(
