Thanks to Bhoomija, this was the first Carnatic vocal concert held at the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. There have been instrumental concerts in the concert hall and vocal music presented at the smaller venues but in terms of a traditional vocal concert at the concert hall, this was a first and it was Carnatic music at its finest.

In the same week where the Carnatic world lost perhaps its brightest star, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, we had his most prominent vocal disciple performing at this world famous venue. Bombay Jayashri didn’t not give any speeches during the concert but rather let her music speak.

Jayashri commenced with her guru’s varnam in valaji and moved on to Thyagaraja’s kriti in dhanyasi. The pre-main piece was a touching varali followed by Dikshitar’s masterpiece describing the ruby studded Goddess Minakshi of Madurai. The Opera House concert hall created a very special ambience with her beautiful voice resonating throughout the large dome of the auditorium.

A filler (and Lalgudi favourite) was the sprightly enta muddo which led onto the majestic kambhoii alapana. The alapana was just exquisite. Sangati after sangati poured out like a torrent and as I closed my eyes I could hear the violin of Lalgudi Jayaraman in Jayashri’s voice. There could be no greater tribute to the guru than this. Almost twenty minutes of pure bliss. It was a kambhoji that will stay in my mind forever.

What followed was Thyagaraja’s ode to Lord Ranganatha. This was the same kriti that MSS presented at the famous United Nations concert but this time it was the modern nightingale at the prestigious venue down under. The neraval came not at the familiar place but at the last two lines: ‘mutyāla sarulayuramunu kāna vacciti tyāgarāja hṛd-bhūṣaṇa’. Jayashri’s neraval was like the pearl ornaments described by Thyagaraja in the line. After the neraval, Jayashri sang kalpana swarams for the pallavi line. Her koraippu traversed the raga resting at all the swarams of the arohana before finally resting at the higher Sa. There was not too much, not too little. Gamakam, briga, neraval, swaram – it was all just the right proportions and it was awesome. The piece concluded with a crisp tani avartanam which included a beautiful khanda nadai passage in different varieties.

The concert concluded with a few lighter pieces rendered very sweetly. First was the beautiful trademark piece of Jayashri (kandEn kandEn) in bhagesri. Next came the reflective, sarvam bhramamayam, which tells that everything we have is just the illusion created by God and finally came guru Lalgudi’s most famous tillana in behag.

The accompanists were very supportive. Bhaskar played very sweet alapanas in varali and kambhoji and his tone blended in well with the vocalist. He often played in the lower octaves, which created lovely overtones. Ramanamurthy and Giridhar provided unobtrusive support, lifting the music appropriately.

Overall this was such a satisfying concert. There were no speeches, no banners or advertising. It was just fine Carnatic music presented in a pristine venue with utmost dignity and class. I couldn’t have asked for more. It was perfect.

Mohan,
How lovely, this tribute in song and not in words, by one of the master's star students!
Lalgudi celebrated in distant Australia in their venue of venues, and in such an endearing way!
A moving experience, no doubt...

Thanks Mohan. It is indeed a special venue - I witnessed Mozart's Don Giovanni opera there.
Jayashri brings credit to the late maestro indeed.

Very nicely said, Mohan. I have a lot of respect for the quiet dignity that is present Bombay Jayashree's music and demeanor.

Mohan, excellent review that completely describes the entire concert experience :-) I flew in specifically for this concert and I am so very glad I did. . . this concert will remain a cherished memory forever.

I could visualise Lord Ranganatha in all His splendour during the muthangi sevai as Smt Jayashri sang the neraval. A very moving experience.

Kudos to the organisers Bhoomija from India.

On a lighter vein, I loved the malligai poo strands offered to all the ladies attending the concert. I believe these were brought in from Chennai - must have taken special permit thru MAF/Border Control Australia. The fragrance just permeated in the auditorium... had to mention this as I really miss these things downunder.

I don't usually write detailed reviews but this was an extraordinary concert that really warranted a report. It was indeed a moving experience.

sreecons - No doubt the concert was well worth the trip from NZ!
There is an importer of these flowers into Australia http://jasmines.com.au/ Not sure if they send the flowers to NZ too!

Brilliant SMH review. Exactly the feelings my white friends expressed in Germany and Australia when they heard our music.
When they say our music is poignant, they actually express their reaction, conditioned as it would be, from the experience gathered of sounds from around the world including rock, jazz, pop, Bollywood and Afro.
The reviewer would have had a chance to hear some amazing voices in the Opera House itself. Voices that don't need amplification or even a drone to sound loud and clear and beautiful.

That he expresses his admiration for our instruments and BJ's voice is simply because of the deep grounding they have received in an art form evolved over so many centuries.

I remember a conversation that I had once with my white Aussie neighbours in the Opera House during a memorable 8 piano concert during the interval. They were intrigued that an Indian was so much into their music. They asked me if India had anything like classical music. I replied, yes we did, a classical form developed over centuries, and that had helped me to enjoy music from world over.

Mohan
I just googled to find that the sydney opera house has many performance venues like concert hall, forecourt, studio etc. In which performance venue was this held ? roughly how many rasikas were there?

Mohan.. what a lovely review
Sreecons.. I flew in from NZ too. First time, a Carnatic Vocalist sang at the Opera House. I thought I would be telling my grandchildren some day of 'that day when....'
And yes it was so simple, yet so classic. I want to add a word for the supeb thani which I really enjoyed... maybe I'm understanding it more now!
My kids raised here always talk about how CM is loud but not well-balanced in acoustics. Maybe I understood it better yesterday. The sound, the setting was so in balanced.
It is a memory to cherish for Life..

Rajeshnat , my question too, since the Concert Hall as billed for BJ is too large, 2600 seats or so!

Rajesh it was in the concert hall. I estimate around 600 people in attendance. There were lots of vacant seats in the upper areas.

Just read the review of Mohan about BJ's concert at the famous Sydney Opera House. I could visualize her singing - all rapt in her music . The Hall which has seen great giants of this Art is an apt place for her Music. I enjoy her music very much as she seems to forget her surroundings and concentrates on her singing. . She also sings with Bhakthi and Bhava. I wish I were there to hear her in person.
Thanks for posting the review, Mohan.
