09 peTra tAi... viruttum.. aDum chidambaramo -bEhAg

The concert was stupendous!!! Absolutely entrancing! Sanjay's voice was extremely co-operative. The first highlight was Begada. It made an entry as if five blind men were caressing different parts of an elephant and then in one sudden instant, there was holy communion and the beast revealed itself! And boy! Did Sanjay tame the beast! During the kalpana swaram section, the swaras were pleading mercy at his feet! He was in absolute command. Although Chakravaham - Sanjay's forte - was great - my grey cells got the better of me so much so that I realized it was the raga only until about half way.
The other highlight was the RTP. I thought the talam was simple adi talam in 2 kalai. Anyway, trust Sanjay to come up with an RTP in Hindi. The ragamalika swaras were superb! The valachi section had Madurai Mani Iyer like singing - such as - s g p d n sss ... n s g p d nnn ... etc. and it was completely enchanting! The pahadi/durga (i still don't have a clue what that raga was) was mesmerizing and had some 'funny' swara singing: ' p d d . m m m .' getting repeated at just the right times and intervals to create a funny and extremely enjoyable effect. The master rocked today - indeed! At the end of the concert, I went up to him to congratulate him and remarked that he could now sing the next RTP in Bengali ...
One complaint - just one short neraval. But then you can't have everything in one concert!

I enjoyed the concert in parts. The begada and chakravaham were nice. I am not a big fan of RTPs in Hindustanish ragas - with its slides and definitely not a Hindi pallavi (not from a linguistic sense but more intonation). So I longed for something like the Kaanada or Kambodhi pallavi he sang in the Samaja across the road recently rather than the Rageshri/Madhuvanti in RSM. I felt his voice settled down well as the concert went along. RSM did the speech and honoring quicker than the one with Vijay Siva the day earlier.

Had to make tough decision between TMK at Sheshadri and Sanjay at Fort. Sanjay won and won the day too. I just read the list of TMK (no comparison intended).
Samikii and Etula was enough for me for they are great compositions having received lesser attention. The swaras MM are usually stressed for begada but Sanjay did a class with a NN to arrive at MM. It was repeated in his usual format. The purandara devarnama was nice only that the mridhangam was more loud and heavy. Chakravaham is one of my favorites , infact the conclusion phrases sounded like an old hindi song (tumko.. ; i am not getting the words). Begada, Abhogi and Chakravaham were good carnatic ragas. Then
Sanjay gave a very good feast with H ragas. Great voice control at places sounding much like any H musicians. Selection of Valji and Durge was all the more apt.
Fulfilling indeed.

I was told that the same evening, Sreevalsan J Menon, gave a stupendous concert at the BTM Cultural Academy. So, there we go. I wanted to attend that, but made it to TMK the last minute..Ramam wrote:Had to make tough decision between TMK at Sheshadri and Sanjay at Fort. Sanjay won and won the day too.
