When you are not able to return it, and you give different reasons for the same , it is 'pallavi mAlikA'. When you give the reasons with different facial emotions it is 'rAgamAlika pallavi'. When the creditor walks to your house repeatedly for the same it is 'pallavi in different naDais'. Finally when he sends the bouncers to your house to collect it from you, it is 'tani Avartanam'. When all your people desert you and leave at that time, it is 'mass exodus during the tani'.

In yesterday's gumki class I was mentioning about my sishya Antonio's drum teacher saying, 'that was fluke; do it again', when the students play it right.

'sir... what is his name, your sishya, again?'

Antonio William Malatesta.

what!! William mELakarthA?

Dont know if this has been posted already.

A few years ago in blr while bmk was entering the venue. Some one requested for mohanam. He said he cant sing and not without money and went by. On stage he says how can one sing mohana with ma and ni and breaks himself and everyone to laughter.

I've spent the last two weeks over this thread, savouring the fine wit and the occasional flash of kaaram every now and then. I will be 'bookmarking' this thread to dip into.
A few from my end will be forthcoming shortly.

I was fortunate enough to listen to one of Bhimsen Joshi's open air concerts on the packed cricket ground outside the Sawai Gandharva hall in Hubli circa mid 80s. On this occasion, he finished the concert without having delivered 'Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma' which was a massive hit among both the pandita-s and paamara-s around then. One among the crowd (As opposed to audience) yelled out "Bhagyada lakshmi haad-lill-al-ree" (But you did not sing Bhagyada..) To which Pandit-ji, exiting stage left, retorted "Nim manyaag Lakshmi bar-li, aamyaag alle bandh haad-theeni" (let Lakshmi come to your house, and I'll come and sing it there). I am not sure if this was his normal persona, but the huge crowd was fairly stunned by that.

I was at a Carnatic kacheri elsewhere which seemed to have become a stamping ground for the 'see-and-be-seen' brigade, whose musical knowledge was perhaps not on par with their fine sense of silks and jewellery . One such pair of finely dolled up ladies were in the row ahead of me. When the singer finished Salim Qauser's 'Main Khayaal hoon kisi aur ka' in the tuqda section, one turned to the other and said "That was a Meera bhajan".

Stumbled up on this in YouTube while looking for something else. The first minute of this is related to this hilarity topic. In the harikatha presentation in Tamil, Smt. Alamelu and Sri. Ayyasubburaman sing their guru Needamangalam Krishnamurthy Bagavathar's song about the stage mannerisms of his contemporary musicians ( and then uses that to nicely segue to the main topic of the discourse ). Quite funny :) It is in Tamil but you can still enjoy the trisra naDai song and the mention of musicians like Ariyakudi, Mudikondon, Semmangudi, Chembai etc.

There was this T.N. Seshagopalan concert at MFA last year I think. On that day the mridangist had been announced as T.K Murthy in the paper but due to some sort of bungling by the organizers he apparently had not heard about it. So we kept waiting and waiting for the concert to start for almost an hour after which the audience started getting restless. So while a backup mridangist was been desperately hunted for, TNS decided to start with Purvikalyani and after an alapana with some remarkable manodharma started the Meenakshi Pancharatnam as a sloka prior to his favourite Meenakshi Me Mudam Dehi. His time could not have been better. For exactly as he came to the line "Veena Venu Mridanga vadya rasikaam", the mridangist walked on to stage with his instrument and the audience exploded :)

A joke, yes!
Hilarity--no ;)

Then again, if I were TNS, my thinking would be like this: they keep saying I don't keep time. Look, I did this time--and what happened? The concert started late as usual--so, what's the point in my making an early start!

It was a special occasion at the Darbar of Indira.
Appropriately MMI was invited to lead the concert.
MMI started singing "eppO varuvArO..."
Suddenly they heard an elderly gentleman entering saying "vanthuTTEn".
It was none other than our dear departed GBL!
MMI interrupted the concert and all attention were turned on to the new arrival.
Even Indra came out of his throne and asked GBL "what is new on earth"
Excitedly GBL started recounting the enthusiastic support of the Rasikas for CM
through rasikas.org and how the old veterans are remembered and respected.
As the interest grew Indira himself expressed the desire to read and participate in the
Rasika discussions. Unfortunately Internet was still not available at Swargam since
it was light years away. The only way of getting info was from new arrivals.
By this time GBL was joined by our veteran departed Rasikas Ramraj and Veeyens.
GBL was pleased to see them and proposed that there should be a annual Rasikas meet
in swargam as more Rasikas start arriving. He mentioned his expertise in organising the Rasikas Meet at Singapore. Ramraj enthusiastically supported the idea stating that he has participated in the ones at Chennai. Indira whole heartedly welcomed the idea adding he would provide full support.

So the good News for all of us is that we will not be missing much when we have to quit since
we will be in good company in addition to all those veterans we have always admired!

CML,
Way to celebrate GBL's presence on earth and to envision him in the other world...

Our days will come, and one by one
We will reach there, to be greeted by
Old friends from Rasikas.org...

I can tell Ramaraj how he inspired me
To compose in rAgAs I was not even aware of!
GBL for his happy sharing and hilarity
Veeyens, that speedy Gonzales! How he charmed me
By being the first in sending me the PDF of my work!

Prof. TTN at IITM music club has a truly gifted capability at cracking puns at the most appropriate moment, puns so indescribable that everyone's brains around have to reboot, literally, with an "AAAAARGH! MAAAMAAAA!". Unfortunately I've not been able to remember most of them since they are so timed and so devastatingly "punny". If I could, it might fill up this thread. Ah the reactions of the professors around him (his usual victims) are an unforgettable memory...

So here's one. It's K Dharini's concert at IITM Music club (disciple of Smt. Vedavalli mami). The main item is an RTP in Mishra Jaathi Jhampa Taalam (2 kalai), IIRC (ok, it was complex), in Khanda Nadai, with an off samam eduppu. And while we were scrambling our best to render this monster, she goes on to do Trikalam with a Nada Bhedam as if it wasn't hard enough, leaving us with broken hands by the end.

When the concert ends, mama walks up and congratulates her before saying, "Dharini, enna nee ippadi kanDa kanDa naDailalaan paaDiTiye?" Behind him, two rows of rasikas (i.e. us) nearly fell out of their chairs, ...

Well, we've been at the "receiving end' on many occasions. The last one was at CLT, IITM, where Mama was being given a send-off; T M Krishna was the artiste that evening. Just as the concert was progressing smoothly, a not-so-much-of-a-CM-lover entered in a smoother fashion. The newest entrant was evidently disturbed by finding no one hanging upside down -- all humans were stuck to their chairs with feet down; our new rasika, a fairly large friend from the local bat community had had enough. He let his displeasure known in no uncertain terms and tried to head out, but alas this was a echo-proof auditorium (we'll am adding this one for effect), so I guess his GPS equivalent didn't work and he couldn't quite "walk out' on the artiste -- many may have thought that the bat was having a ball :).

Nervous attendants kept all the CLT doors open to let our avian rasika find a more preferable genre outside, and escape he did after a while. When TTN mama spoke, he asked Krishna, "Do you know why that bat made it here?". The eager victims heard: "Because it knew you were going to Vow-All today!".

P.S: For non-Tamilians: Bat is Vavvaal in Tamil.

Two artists that I think both have a good sense of humour are TMK and Prince rama Varma. While enough has been said about TMK, a recent concert of Rama Varma that I attended was filled with delightful little quips. Some of them may not seem as funny as they actually were, but let me try.

1. My guru BMK was a very outgoing and proud man. In fact, whenever you hear a recording of him singing his own compositions, you will often hear him caress the 'Murali' mudra as if it were a young child. On the other hand, MDR was a very shy person. So if you ever hear a recording of his, his Mudra Varadadasa is often muffled. You will hear a cough or a weird snort when Varadadasa arrives. That is what tells you that he composed it...
(This was said before the MDR composition Tyagaraja Gurum Ashraye in Kedaram. During the composition, he deliberately emphasised on Varadadasa Vanditham, leading to laughter from the audience).

2. (After Endaro) Most people do not appreciate the meaning in this beautiful krithi. They run through it so fast. P-U-N-C-H 'punch'a ratnam.

3. (Before a rare Tyagaraja composition Kripala Vala) This raga's name is Nadavarangini. Of course, if my guru was here today, he would not simply say that. He would often cherish confusing the audience and holding the raga's name up for everyone to see - he would have said naooohdahvaraaaaoohhhgini.

4. After the main Saveri (the rain was pouring down on the tent above and the drops were percolating through and falling onto the unfortunate audience) Now, we are going to present a song in the raga Amritvarshini (laughter). As they say, if you are smart, you can sing Amritavarshini and it will start raining. If you are really smart, you will sing Amritavarshini when it is already raining!!!

5. After a 5 min alapana for the last item, a Behag Thillana: The alapana was to put you to sleep. The Thillana will wake you up.

These are all I remember as of now...
