Carnatic rock

Post by sruthi »

Recently I came across this video clip of a Carnatic rock performance. Is this a popular genre? Had never heard of it before.

i think we talked about Agam before briefly. I remember having some what of a listenable experience.

With this one I looked for any bright spots, in terms of quality of singing, poruththam (fit) during the transitions between the song and the rest, etc., but could not feel anything. It is so strange to hear the drummer play the same thing for Bantureethi... through out the song.

It is not easy but I do believe that it is possible to create a cohesive effort in that setting, but I did not hear it in this instance.

One either loves her, or hates her...a third option could be to love to hate her, I suppose

Ravi, the fourth option is also possible. Hate to admit one likes her as in closet rasikas/guilty pleasure ;)
At least with her, though misappropriating the music is enormously jarring and troubling, she seems to be quite musical and has an instinct on how to arrange things so things fit together. We have not talked about her here in a while but she seems to be still kicking in that kind of genere and added more songs. She turned Marudamalai Mamaniye into a vocal jazz style :)
Someswara!

I'm sort-of glad that she is still around and doing her thing, which is perhaps one of the better among the fusion "things," but I do recall the conversations in whatever-our-forum-was-called-then in which people said that they found her treatment of lyrics that are essentially religious to be unacceptable.

harimau, This is is first one from India that I have heard.
I have come across a few produced outside India,
e.g. this one: http://youtu.be/UrCH4rsV5J0 (perhaps this is carnatic jazz?)
