Dr. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam would be presenting a lecture demonstration on Nadayogi Thyagaraja (Nadopasana , the practice of worship through music, with St.Thyagaraja as Guru).

The program started 20 minutes behind schedule and there were nearly 40 rasikas, including students.
Students trained in workshop showed their talents individually, by singing rare kritis.

Marakodi Bahudari GNB - an excellent rendition
Harini
Kedharam Chidambara Nataraja MD.- Neat rendition with Very pleasing voice
Sahana
Amrutha varshini Enai nee maravathe- MMDandapani Desikar. This girl appeared in Jaya TV Carnatic idol. She has a very sweet and shrill voice and performance was good. In fact I expected some shower to come to ease the hot climate on hearing this song from this very talented girl of 6th grade. She has great potential and if trained properly, will shine in future.
Nishevitha
Rasika priya Arul saiyya vendumaiya Koteeswara Iyer- This girl has lot of potential with strong voice. Rendition was very perfect and enjoyed by every body .
Nishevitha and Sahana
Pahimaam Nattai SS- There was perfect match between the two while rendering and was totally very nice and quite enjoyable.
Renderings were accompanied by Adithya on mirudangam. He played well with enough skill. Learnt that he is a disciple of Ravindra Bharathy Sridharan.

Started at 17 00 hrs and some of the interesting points are as given below.
This was more or less a complete concert with explanations before rendition.
-Thyagarja composed initially three songs taking the first lines from Sangita Ratnakara.

-Natha thanumanisam in Chinthamani
-Sobillu sapathaswara in Jaganmohini
The word swara means self illuminating
An audio was played . Ragasudharasa in Andolika by GNB . It is quite possible to do niraval and swaram in any word of this kriti and this is an unique feature in Thyagaraja's kritis. But one should know and understand the meaning of the word while attempting niraval.
-Nadha loludai Kalyana vasantham R A very rare raga well handled by Thygaraja. The violinst Saravana priyan, taking lessons from GJR Krishnan was given an opportunity for the delineation of this raga with a mention that this is a special raga of Lalgudi school.
-Sokasuka mrudhanga thalamu Sri ranjani S
An audio of Nedunuri Krishnamurthi Nathopasana Begada was played.
-Samaja varagamana Hindolam R, N and S (For a change a kriti on the praise of Lord Krishna)
-Mokshamu kalatha Saramathi N S and T
-Sangita Gnanamu Dhanyasi (This was sung by Nisha)
-Geetharthamu Suruti Audio played KVN
-A slokam composed by Manambuchavadi school a prime disciple in praise of Thygaraja . Shanmukapriya, Mohanam, Bagesri , Madhyamavathi and Suruti.

The program came to an end by 19 00 hrs. Dr. V. S thanked and congratulated the artistes accompanied her for their able support. Mridangist thani was good. He gave an excellent support. Violinist Hindolam was excellent. In general the entire Lecture Demo [ Concert ] was excellent and was enjoyed by all . Dr. VS's special mention about the parents support and their devotion for encouraging their children was also well appreciated. Vote of thanks by Shri Pat Krishnan. was very crisp. He thanked the Artistes and the audience.

Thank you for the reports! Dr. VS is one of the rare breed of performing artists who are also scholars (i.e., those that have earned PhDs)...must have been a pleasure to listen to her.
