Keeravani, the 21st among the 72 melakarta ragas, is a raga with an enchanting feel. Today, it has acquired a popularity that is close to that of major ragas like Kalyani and Kamboji. Unlike those ragas, however, it is a fairly recent raga, with its first composition believed to be by composer Tyagaraja. exploring the raga through some compositions.

V R Dileep Kumar is one of the most exciting young musicians from Kerala, His renditions of the classical ragas is strictly by book; along with that, Dileep Kumar is also adept at detailed expositions of ragas such as Andolika, Behag and Brindava Saranga. Kalpakam Swaminathan was a vainika and vocalist who followed the Tanjavur style of playing the veena. Kalpakam Swaminathan's veena playing style closely followed the vocal, and it was built on reproducing the gamakas and graces of the voice. Her music was very much like her - simple, direct, elegant and evocative, without using technical artifices to produce effect.

Narayana Theertha was a sanyasi who followed both Bhakti and Nadopasana, as worship. He is an integral part of the Bhajana Sampradaya in India. The compositions are from the 'Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini', a dance drama, which is based on the life of Lord Krishna, from His birth to His marriage with Rukmini. Of course, the original tunes of these songs have been lost; the evocative tunes that we have now have been composed by various eminent musicians.

The interesting aspect of Carnatic compositions is the importance of a definite structure and adherence to it. The Samashti Charanam is one such unique feature in a kriti where the Charanam also stands in for the Anupallavi. Muthuswami Dikshitar has composed a good number of kritis with Samashti Charanam. Featuring kritis with a Samashti Charanam which have a bright air about them.
