Re: Sunday Brunch
That RTP in Malahari is awesome. It provides the text book for raga Malahari. It is one of the concert in early 80s. TNS was the forerunner for todays artistes singing RTP in rare ragas. IN this concert accompaniment is provided by SD Sridhar and Ramanthapuram CS Murugaboopathy. I heard that this concert was held during the inauguration of the Music school ny Neyveli Santhanagopalan, who was the first disciple of TNS.

It is also known that Sivan was a disciple of Neelakanta Sivan (composer of Ananda natamaaduvaar, Endraiku sivakripai etc.) while at Karamanai agraharam in Trivandrum.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Do you mean (Papanasam) Sri Sivan - who was re-named Sivan (his given name was Ramiah) in honor of his 'guru', Sri Nilakantha Sivan? Or do you mean Sri TNS' guru, Sri Sankara Sivan? I have not heard of the latter being the disciple of Sri Nilakantha Sivan. AFAIK, Sri Sankara Sivan was Sri HKMB's disciple. (And Sri TNS pays homage to his guru parampara by adopting the ankita of 'sankara dAsa' OR 'harikESa dAsa' in his compositions).....Sivaramakrishnan wrote:It is also known that Sivan was a disciple of Neelakanta Sivan (composer of Ananda natamaaduvaar, Endraiku sivakripai etc.) while at Karamanai agraharam in Trivandrum.

Highly recommended for today:
1. the Kumar Gandharva films division documentary linked a couple of days back
2. the Sowmya Kaanada RTP in radioweb.in She sings very well and her tanam is excellent, full of phrases showing veena gamakas. The violin of Kannan and mridangam of Poongulam are also excellent and the recording quality as usual is excellent on radioweb.in.

Dear rasikas,
Two excellent tracks for tomorrow. Both courtesy great rasikas who chose to share with others their joy:
1. KVN-LGJ-Raja Mani-PMI in a soiree - this song is sung in a tantalising tempo and worth many listens.
2. A group song tribute to Dikshitar - Girijayaa - Shankarabharanam -one of his Abhayamba kritis. Sung with the verve that the lyric demands by Sri TN Bala and group as the tag says.
The folder link is here: http://bit.ly/17zmcln

Thanks Sachi for the links. The fast paced rendition of the MD song is interesting. In addition to 'singing with verve' as you put it, the tuning seems to be different compared to this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGi543YWUPA
But it may just be due to the tempo difference. But what a difference in feel for the song between the two versions!

Re: Sunday Brunch
VKM, yes-very different approaches to the same song! I somehow find in this version the familiar even/soft plucking and sonority of Kalapakam Mami missing. Also I wonder if the singer is she or another person.
I liked the TN Bala version for the way it built up the momentum so well especially in the anupallavi. The ladies also sing with a lot of enthu. I am sure that occasion would have offered many more lovely items. Unfortunately I found no way to mine S'Priya for more tracks from the same recording.

knrh05, Rsachi: The tags on some of these files says the contributing artist is T.K. Brinda. Does that sound correct?
It feels to me like the Kalyani song is sung more in a Thyagaraja krithi style than MD. ( especially the 'amba' part sung for the second drutham in the first couple of repetitions ).

The tags are acts of commission at S'Priya but their listing on the MD TRIBUTE page mentions TNB and group. I think all the songs I collected have been sung by the same group with a male lead and good female voices.
Yes, I saw the website! Will listen more.
Right now all I say is I love that group singing.

A good collection of songs.
A correction: several songs are listed as sung by Ambujam Viswanathan. They should read as Amujam Vedantham and students.

Thanks Sachi.
I looked to see if Shyama Sastri has any other bhairavi compositions than his masterpiece swarajathi. Found number 57, parvati janani. It sounds great. The other one, '75 vanita-inE bhairavi Adi tAna varNam' looks interesting but there is no audio link in that table.

Dear folks,
Come Sunday 23 June, we can look forward to a super post-brunch session of cricket in the wet:( English weather between two teams most talented in the ICC CT 2013, and I am sure you all have heaps to say about the gutsy and well-paced Pommies (pardon!) and the flashy Indians known for records, trophies, scams, fixes, ads for all things and of course conflicts of interest (hopefully no pardon!)
But before that, what about a GREAT BRUNCH WITH MADURAI MANI IYER, folks?:

Here is the link to Kharaharapriya, with the hallmark melody and accompaniment synergy (Lalgudi? and Mani Iyer?) of the one and only Madhura-Gana-Kaladhara! There is bit of Khamach in the beginning before KHP and Chetasri after and the track ends with a bit of S'bharana. I have left it as it is. Courtesy the MMI Centenary double DVD from Dr VKV.

Enjoy!

PS: Did someone share this already? No matter.

MASTERLY PERFORMANCE BY THE BEST! ITS interesting to just follow the Karaharapriya esp. Chakkaniraja through out his career & from the first avaialble MMI Concert with PMI'S GURU accompanying MMI to his last concert with V.R. as mridangist which I have SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN for studying the efforts by MMI to reach perfection as ASTUTELY noted by the great critic B.V.K.Sastry! I specifically recorded concerts in which Karaharapriya esp Chakkani was rendedered in the DVD.....VKV

Here is the ORIGINAL Geeta Govinda exponent, Raghunath Panigrahi. With Sanjukta, he gave so many such unforgettable aesthetic moments over so many decades:

Re: Sunday Brunch
Sachi - you are right, Smt. Sanjukta and Sri Panigrahi were really the people who defined oDissi for our generation. Thank you so much for the clip - I have spent a rainy and cloudy Saturday listening to the tracks and thinking back to her performances and other interactions I had with her.
While her ability to perform was legendary, I was very surprised how well and how easily (and without any trace of the prima donna that she was very capable of being) she communicated with a bunch of us, students of Punjab University and PGI, as part of a lec-dem for SPICMACAY. She shared with us that she had learned bharatanATyam (just like many bharatanATyam dancers like Smt. Alarmel Valli and Ms. Malavika Sarukkai have learned oDissi from her guru) from none other than Smt. RDA herself. And went on to demonstrate differences between bharatanATyam and oDissi.
Any word on Sri Panigrahi's efforts to get oDissi (the singing) classified as a third branch of Indian classical music (in addition to HM and CM) by the SNA?

Re: Sunday Brunch
Ravi,
I don't know about the Panigrahis' role in getting recognition for Odiya music as a separate classical form.
But I do know that Odiya music features PROMINENTLY in Doordarshan telecasts of late, with prime coverage of many live events there. Unfortunately, I must confess, I find the quality of that music or presentation far from the standard set in my mind by the Panigrahis as well as the musicians from Nrityagram.
Now here is an inside story of the class that some veteran rasikas share occasionally about musicians and stars in this forum.
I happen to have known a great Ramakrishna Math swamiji, Swami Priyananda, who had served in Chennai math for many years before he had moved to Mysore and later Bangalore. He was very close to our family from his Chennai days. He was a GREAT devotee and singer, an expert musician from Orissa, who served Ramakrishna mission with distinction for over 65 years.
One day I mentioned Raghunath Panigrahi to him. He then reluctantly shard this story.
He had in fact been considered a sort of guru and mentor by RP and even his father, who was a devotional singer. They made their living singing Bhajans. When Swamiji was in Chennai, in 50's/60's, RP and his father requested swamiji to arrange for them to come and sing in gatherings in Chennai their bhajan concerts to earn money. At that time RP was a bright young man. Swamiji arranged it with the help of math devotees. Swamiji was overseeing their stay and mentoring RP, musically and otherwise.
At that time, Sanjukta was studying in Kalakshetra. Her mother was a big influence on her and they came from a well-to-do family. Her mother, who used to spend considerable time in Chennai chaperoning her young daughter, came to know the Odiya musician father and son in Chennai. She at once started working on making RP the musician and later husband for her own daughter, quick to see the potential for the partnership to become so successful. Swamiji described how she would get them (unfamiliar with luxury) to drive around in her car and impress them no end.
Swamiji, as you could expect from any RK Mission sanyasi, was very much against these lower middle-class religious singers coming under her influence and getting sucked up into what he considered a worldly 'glamorous' art family. He was clear in his advice, but the swamiji told me that Sanjukta's mother was very clever and persuasive and as they say, the rest is history.
I remember Swamiji had preserved many cassettes of RP's singing many Bhajans taught to him by Swamiji. I could see how he had played unwillingly and unwittingly a major role in casting the star partnership of the Panigrahi couple.

Re: Sunday Brunch
Just returned from another Ramakrishnan Murthy concert!
Memorable RTP in Natakapriya, with a solid ragam, tanam and pallai with swaras. The pallavi line had been composed by Mridangam vidwan Arunprakash (who also accompanied today). Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha presented an audience of quality if not quantity.
Other items - Vatapi, Evarani, ParamaPavana, Sri Subrahmanyaya, Birana vara,, Smarasundaranguni, Kasturitialam shloka followed by Krishna nee, Anri Ulagam, Ramachandraya-mangalam. The raga changes in RTP to Kanada, Kapi and Behag were executed with élan.
Since I can't share this concert, let me share another good one:

Re: Sunday Brunch
Musically, this was a highly spirited weekend. I saw a video concert of MSS accompanied by Seshagiri Rao and Guruvayoor Dorai. Must have been held in early 1980s. Eventhough I am having this CD for the last three years, I do not remember having seen this earlier. I saw the second CD which began with My favourite- Mukhe the thamboolam followed by Khirasagarasayana in Mayamalavowla. People would have enjoyed the spectacular neraval already in many concerts. So what more I should say. Simply fantastic. This was followed by a great alapana of Kapi- which is not that seldom heard from MSS. A spirited alapana for 5 minutes followed by Meevalla gunadosha and kalpana swaras. It was heaven. Then came O Rangasayee. What an alapana, Full of energy and some unheard sangathis. Elaborate nerval at Bhoolokavaikunta and swaras. After a brief tani, one Meera Bhajan and Govindashtakam.
There was one Meenakshi Kalyanam photo at the backdrop. I do not know when and where this concert was held. Perhaps Cienu may throw more light upon this concert. The recording, audio and visual were excellent. MS was accompanied by RV and Gowri Ramnarayanan. RV also shared neraval and swaras. MS clad in one majenta saree was full of radiance and poise. The bhava and facial and hand gestures simply transports one to a different world. Any amount of adjectives is insufficient to explain the impact of the concert.

Re: Sunday Brunch
This weekend, I also heard a lecture demonstration on Pallavi by Dr. S.Ramanathan. This was very educative and enjoyable presentation. As a scholar musician and musicologiost, he is naturally great in his presentation- whether concert or demonstration. In this he has dwelt upon the origin of Pallavi and goes on to present pallavis sung by older musicians and Pallavi specialists like Namakkal Narasimha Iyengar and Madurai Sreerangam Iyengar. He has sung more than 10 pallavis- many with alapana and swaras. I will soon share with the rasika friends.

CRama, I take it that you meant Dr. N. Ramanathan!
Yes, he is a good scholar and excellent speaker as well.

CRama,
After I heard a recording of MSS singing Mayamalavagowla early 70's in KGS, I have known how great her conception and execution was for this raga.
You seem to have had a great weekend!
