Every flower fascinates in its own way, but pavaLa 'malli' belongs with the best among them. Its shape, colors and fragrance are unique.
As an offering to the gods, it's a winner too. Though the petals are delicate and are easily bruised, it makes sure that it's' made into a garland of Vishnu by gently falling to the ground, without our fingers having to pluck them.

Have you seen them falling gently to the ground, one after the other very early in the morning?

The stems of the flower truly resembles coral. With a banana fiber strand, even a child can make a garland, as if they are beads of coral! And to see the gods decked in them and to smell their perfume in the sanctum!

Is it one of the ten flowers which are supposed to be favorites of Vishnu? Sougandhi is one which I adore!

Thanks for more lovely pictures of the coral flower and all info. The gods and heroes of myths it seems were not spared in finding flowers which their spouses fancied!
The flower saugandhi as I knew it, when I searched for it, turns out to be kalyANa saugandhikam, belonging to the ginger family. Very different from PavaLa malli, much bigger, and has a fragrance of its own. Anyhow, Draupadi sent BhImA to search for one to plant in her garden, and he is obstructed by a monkey which annoys him. He can't even lift the animal's tail! Turns out that he's HanumAn, his brother! He then fetches the flower for Draupadi.

There is also a kathakali number called by the flower's name.The hanumAn role naturally must be a coveted one.

The pArijAta is mentioned in lists of flowers used for worship; and is used for both ViSNu and Shiva, but seems to be favoured for the worship of Vishnu. While it flowers more or less throughout the year in South India, in Bengal the flowering of the shivli is associated with the beginning of the 'puja' - Navaratra. I recollect two episodes at the mention of the pArijAta.

My grandmother (Rukmanammal) remembers with relish, the pArijAta tree in our neighbours home, which bent several branches into our courtyard [reminiscent of SatyabhAma's tree that bent flowering branches into Rukmini's mansion]. Her fond memory of the tree is because her father would go everyday to collect these flowers and Tulasi into a small cane kUDai singing the song 'TulasI-bilva' in kedaragaula; and then use them for the tiruvArAdhanai singing the lines 'uramuna mukhamuna, shiramuna nEtramuna' as he gently placed the flowers on the icon.

The other episode relates to my own Grandfather. He too, used to collect a big batch of pArijatam everyday; and they would lie in the kOilAzhwAr manDapam like a heap of snowflakes sprinkled with saffron. the next day, as he collected the nairmAlya - faded flowers, he would set aside the pArijata flowers, pluck out the coral stalks and would save them over a week. When when he had a sufficient stock of stalks, he would boil them in water, with a pinch of salt, and use the decoction to dye a piece of silk.When it dried, the cloth was the colour of gold! It was like a magic trick. He would say 'Idu daan pItAmbaram colour'. This cloth was used to wrap the icons and the SaligrAmas.

The association of this lovely ginger-family flower with the saugandhika which Bhima brought, is also far-fetched. The flower is very common in Kerala. There are hardly and members of GIngiberaceae in the Himalayas, where Bhima is said to have found the plant. This so-called saugandhikA is popularly seen throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of India, and may have originated in the western Ghats. It goes by the name DOlOn chAmpA in Bengal, and has figured in Tagore's poems.

There are two varieties - one white and one in the colour range of gopicandanam-sandal paste. Both have the same gentle, memorable fragrance.This fragrance (sugandha) along with the popularity of the KalyAna-saugandhikam aTTakathA in KErala may have led to them naming this commonly found flower as the Saugandhika.

I too grew up with a Parijata tree bending over into our courtyard over the wall, with lots of flowers. I also lived much later for my years in a house with a splendid Parijata tree. The only thing, if our driver wasn't careful, the tree would scrape the car body with scratches in the driveway.
We bought two saplings at Lalbagh. One for our front yard which was promptly stolen. The other for our neighbour's garden where it is flourishing.

Your "like a heap of snowflakes sprinkled with saffron" is worth any number of poetic lines!
The pItAmbaram silk dye which your grandfather concocted is another gem.
As usual, your stories not only have details but depth. Yes, like saffron, the stems stain your fingers yellow if you pick a lot of them or hold them in your hand for more than a few moments.

Very interesting. Vegetable dyes save the environment compared to the chemically synthesized ones!
I wonder how many of the multi-coloured flowers will yield dyes which can be used to decorate and garnish our foods.
Does the pavazha malli plant attract snakes?

That is, are snakes drawn to fragrance?

In pre-urban boom, even in Chennai, snakes and scorpions were encountered. Scientists here may know about a connection between fragrance and snakes (and other creatures)--their being attracted to fragrance as they are to music.

We do know that a few plants (herbs) can 'deter' critters...

There is the famous plant Sarpa gandhi (smell of snake) from which the tranquilizer serpasil was synthasized

It is the flower of Nagalingam or Cannonball Tree (Couroupita guianensis).

'Sarpagandha' is Rauvolfia serpentina --

This tempts me to share a recent attempt on a similar theme which I had submitted on another forum. We were given the last line and asked to come up with a veNpA that uses pozhippu mOnai (alliteration in the 1st and third words <seer> of each line)....... this one did not pass the test, as it suffers from lack of mOnai in the 2nd line!

நெஞ்சில் தவழ்ந்து நகைக்கிறான் - பஞ்சனைய
