Wow - Congratulations to Sudha - well deserved for her contributions to the music world. She has created so many more new rasikas of Carnatic Music and popularized the GNB / MLV baani. She's a role-model to show how through guru bhakti and sincere practice - one can achieve great heights in life.

BTW - Is this an indication that perhaps more younger (relative) artistes are in line for this prestigious award (Ravikiran, Sanjay, Krishna...). Beginning of a new era in music.

So it is confirmed with the above sruti magazine link. It looks with sudha a new next generation of vidwans/vidushis are getting ready to get the award. Sudha musically is senior to Aruna sairam/ravikiran and if I am right musicians like vijay/nsg came bit later and then sanjay came bit later and then lot of musicians.
While MLV left quite a lot of performing sishyas , i am not aware of any musicians other than deepika and sangeetha swaminathan who are sishyas of Sudha. Hope sudha trains a new generation of vidushi/vidwans and keeps her GNB/ MLV baani

B-) Congratulations to vidushi Sudha Raghunathan!
After thirty seven years or so, the Academy awarded the title to a vidushi--M.S.Subbulakshmi in 1968. About ten more were honored, here and there during the following years (very few indeed, compared to vidvAns).

Sudha R also richly deserves it--for making waves in a once-male-dominated,
conservative form of music.

Sudha's major contribution to CM is her making it more accessible to folks at home and abroad, and in taking it to the world stage.

As Rajesh hopes, she will lead more of her students to the concert stage--in the same large-hearted, loving way in which her own guru MLV did. After all, that is a laudable trait in a musician and a guru who is dedicated to her/his art.

Once again, congratulations to vidushi Sudha Raghunathan!

MLV was 49 when she got SK (youngest) MS was 52. Maybe Sudha is older than 52.

I have heard that Smt. Sudha has done a lot to popularize CM not just with Indians, but with others such as the Srilankan Tamils. To me, she was at the forefront of the wave of the new-age CM performer - a professional, who made a career in CM on par with say, a career in medicine - professional, respectful, punctual, and wonderfully interactive, able to communicate with not just her music, but with words as well. After the late Sri Santanam, she was one of the artists who sort of took it to the masses if you will.

Just slipped sangeetha swaminathan .Apart from sangeetha swaminathan and Deepika ,i am not aware of other disciples. I still hope she makes her mark as her guru MLV in guiding more disciples.

Ravi,
Yes, a great communicator, a trend-setter in fashions, a visible icon, and yes, she was 'at the forefront of the wave of the new age CM performer'. I felt it (I was dazed, I must say) when I saw her compere the Millennium show at the Academy. This was a whole new scene for me, for someone who had lived away from the CM scene for so long.
Sudha appeared in seven (?) different saris, changing for each announcement and intro. More crowds at the Academy this year, even for morning concerts--many wanting to see her in different grand saris!
