R.SuryaprakAsh who is most known for his mmi sarvalaghu singing had only a brief mmi head and a tail. His only above average rendering was his kedaragOwlai varnam, everything else was excellent . sivalOka nAdhanai was very good especially his alankaram arpa sughathai marandOm and his fiery swarams .The mmi head was abundantly shown in the popular orajOOpuchU with his trademark swaram centering around "ri ga ma sa ri ga ma ma".

The surprise was his rendering of first rAga alApanai which continued as a main krithi . KalyAni was perfect and I spotted him more like a madurai sOmu who always reaches a crescendo in full throttle. The nijadAsa varAda is not my favourite kalyAni but he sang quite well . The neraval(bhujagAdhipa shayana bhUmijAramaNa) and swaram was excellent , very complete in every aspect,reminding more of sOmu .

vasantha bhairavi with a brief rAga sketch was a good filler. Whenever there is an early main , thank god there is also a RTP. SuryaprakAsh RTP was very similiar in style to ssi . Started with a elaborate keeravani alApanai with a violin return and then again going to the second half of keeravani rAgam was a treat. tAnam was quite long for 7 minutes in madhyama kAlam , then surprised me with a very high speed tAnam for the last 2 minutes giving him a long ovation from the crowd.The pallavi line "mandavAsa vadhani keeravani"was perfect for him to loop . Swarams in hameerkalyAni (I am assuming viruttam in hameerkalyAni is easy, but a long rAgamaliga swaram is tough,corrections welcome)was long and nice . The next mishra(?)shivaranjani was the best which went very long and perfect . The wrap of keeravani swaram was just ok.

All tukkadas were good ,somu's madurai arasAlum was a ga ga experience for all of the crowd members,that too with a preceding darbAri kAnadA long alApanai . Suryaprakash was little creative in bringing the line mangAdu mariyamma along with the usual thiruverkadu mariammA(the song madurai arasAlum has sahithyam with place of worship and goddess for every line like sirkazhi tripurasundari , mylai karpagam) .The mrudgangam artist took a long time to settle ,and he was only ok after that .Sherthalai played well in RTP especially he playing a small bit of AIR -Akashvani was a mishra(?)shivaranjani treat to hear.

If there was anything greater than the concert ,that was the sabha patron arusuvai natarAjan's(famous caterer who is 80 plus) very good talk in general about his closeness with madurai sOmu .He also talked about how he used to help mmi/ssi/sOmu/musiri/mvi etc.. Looks like in the golden days of CM 1940's to 1960's, we had great support people to support great musicians. His support ranged from supplying hot cofee and hot bonda's when there was a secret handshake of musician loosening his kudumi..:) As arusuvai spotted, I also spotted a sOmu, mmi and ssi in this concert , in addition his high speed tAnam reminded me of TNS.Overall an excellent 2 hour and 50 minutes concert.

Oh god, not again... Please, it is "Ora jUpu jUcEdi nyAyamA..." Don't butcher the lyrics like MMI used to ;)

rbharath,
After you posted , I am recollecting better .The krithi had thiruverkadu karumAriammA , there was then samayapuram mariammA , there were two new lines that I had heard it for the first time.Those was thanjavur mariammA and mangAdu kamAkshi ammA.

manda hAsa means tejas(radiance ), so you and radhakrishnan are right. Incidentally I heard thru grapevine that mangAdu kamakshiamman existed when adi shankarA was there, now it is confirmed with the above url??

Word-wise, manda = slow, hAsa = laugh ->manda hAsa = smiling

Radience could be an off shoot of a smiling face :)
