A suggestion- rasikas.org and SK awardee collab

Post by Rsachi »

Dear rasikas,
I got this idea about how we can leverage the huge and interested rasikas.org community in promoting CM through the annual SK awards.

This year's SK awardee has been an active performer with several albums and concert recordings in the public domain.
How would it be, that we, after approaching and interacting with the SK awardee and getting her OK to a list of her top 100 tracks in the public domain (including freely accessible and commercially accessible ones), we go through a process of listening to the tracks, and responding to them with a process of adding comments, appreciation and adding rate/like etc, so that by Jan 1, 2014, rasikas.org can publish the top 100 tracks list with the access details and composite ranking/rating?

For illustration, if there is a song like Mathe Malayadhwaja - HMB Varnam she has rendered, with a ranking of 5/5 (1875 votes) and with reviews/comments as well as with an internet access link, the nascent listening public can benefit by going and listening to it.

This idea works for me as follows:
1. SK being the highest award to a Carnatic musician, the listening public would like to access their music, not randomly but in a guided manner.
2. Rasikas.org, being an interested community of serious CM listeners, will add their listening comments and ranking/rating.
3. The public availability of the top 100 tracks through rasikas.org with the ranking and reviews/comments will promote the spread of interest in CM in a more interactive manner. (100 is a number, it could even be 25).
4. Rasikas moderation will ensure that no malice comes in.
5. The entire process will go beyond physical limitations by access via Internet.
6. If we do this every year, rasikas.org will be adding their value to the spread of CM by championing the best proponents of CM and the best available recordings of CM.

I am suggesting that as rasikas.org, we will be simply creating a process for something that is already in place, but used sporadically by only fans and YT visitors etc. Also if my suggestion makes sense to rasikas.org, and the SK awardees, it will become a platform for constructive collaboration.

What say!?

R Sachi...

I appreciate that your thinking process is far ahead of the time..

But , to my mind it is a very complicated one..Do you feel it can work..? Who will monitor the complicated procedure..The man power required?

We have to only see how the existing one can be made more transparent.

I know that there are people who can appreciate the procedure outlined by you !!!

this is good opportunity to collaborate with sangeethapriya..they have tons of music...ranking feature to be introduced.. what if certain artist who is against archiving their music is awarded SK ?

Can we do this as pilot basis with SK who is no more? Example - MSS or DKP or SSI ? Sangeethapriya already have tribute pages for these artists.

How about legends who couldn't recognized by MMA - likes of MDR, LGJ, KJY, etc ?

Dear VKLSM,
The process and technology are not difficult- I can handle it. It is a cloud-DB-linked multi-element survey the modalities for which are in my head already.

I need a couple of volunteers who are well connected computer-savvy to work with me, and we need to have a couple of moderators for comments/track reviews.

The key to the whole thing is the availability of tracks with URLs in the public domain. We will then not violate any copyrights etc. Sangeethapriya.org, raaga.com, hummaa.com, gaana.com, MIO, and good old YT all come to mind.

The rasikas.org Listener's guide to the music of ..........(=SK track compilation) will be a downloadable, web-linked document published in this BB forum.

Not all tracks will be heard or appreciated by everyone, and that's still OK.

Dear Pattammaa,
I do think a living and performing SK will appreciate the virtuous cycle I am proposing here, whereby their published music is appreciated by the cognoscenti of rasikas.org and will thus help a) make the SK's music more attractive b)help listeners listen to the SK's best music.

Finally I do agree that the suggestion is a fairly complex idea and difficult to implement. But then we have nearly five months to pull it off. And this year's SK has her own recording label apart from over 100 tracks in the public domain, and may like to cooperate. Let's ponder. The proverb says, "fools rush in where angels fear to tread". It applies to me of course.

RSachi, +1 for the bold idea. However, the above line really made me laugh. Sangeethapriya, not violate copyright? Really? :-o Oh, wait... that's right... they don't. It is the users who upload files who do (or so says the DMCA). ;)

PS: Apologies for the digression from the main topic of the thread.

Your suggestion comes with surgical precision as from the CEO of CM Enterprises smacking of Business with the winning artistes as enterpreneurs which indeed most are. In fact MA appears to be moving in that direction in their "New Look". With your experience you do have the talent to consummate your proposal with a successful team.

Unfortunately Rasikas.org is not the right Market Place IMHO!
We in a minority are still steeped in Tradition viewing CM as an Art Form and not as a commodity to be promoted. But the future of CM appears to be in your line of thinking.
The demise of Traditional values in CM is inevitable!

I certainly think a rasika endorsed archive is of great use.

I would suggest focussing on existing classics in the public domain, with professional commentary by people who were from that generation/alive at that time/maharasikas, rather than catalog an already well-recorded artiste whose music finds its way to the general public quite easily (such as Sudha, TMK, Sanjay etc). I think Pattamma was making a similar point.

My suggestion is to start with creating a listener's guide for concerts like GNB/LGJ/PR-1964 MMA; Semmangudi/LGJ/Sankaran- the airport concert; MSS/VVS/TKM at the UN; Ramnad Krishnan/MSG/Sankaran 1969 academy; Ariyakkudi/TNK/PMI - several concerts (and many many more KVN, MDR, SKR, Brinda, etc). Right now many of these are recordings have cult status among collectors and enthusiasts. We would do the world of CM a great service by bringing these recordings to the forefront with knowledgeable rasika and even artiste commentary, rather than promoting commercially successful contemporary artistes. This would be a great introduction to any newcomer

Just my 2 cents. However, the idea of a standing collaboration with a leading figure in the music scene is indeed an appealing one.

Dear RSachi,

I agree with Mahavishnu that an archive for musicians like KVN,MDR,SSI,ARI,LGJ,MSG may be created.sangeethapriya is a source where you get good music, but is
very cumbersome to access.Present day musicians concerts are held in plenty.

mahavishnu and hnbhagvan - good points... there are plenty of concerts today, but quality is very bad (debatable) - there are exceptions.

Any given day, i would prefer to listen to MDR, MLV or KVN or MMI from home ! If we form a knowledgible pool of rasikas who can provide commentary on manodharma aspects in each concerts - example alapana, swara, neraval, tani avarthanam, and then structure of concert, any changes in sangathi's, padantharam etc, it would be great.. I'm all for it...

One concert per member per week - for this review.. any takers...

RSachi - sorry for hijacking your topic.. :(

I am providing link to a number of clips which if you find useful can use it
I can provide links to RTPS also, a little later..A large number of them ....more than half an hour concerts..

Folks, many thanks for your active consideration.
I don't hold any proprietorship or have any CEO type of agenda. I know better than to grind any axe in this space.

My feeling is
A. It's great if knowledgeable rasikas.org members guide listeners with their reviews and selections with links to the famous concerts in public domain of yesteryear maestros. For example Dr VKV himself created a two DVD set of MMI concerts.
B. Listening and ranking URL linked popular tracks via rasikas.org pool of listeners creates a kind of engine to connect the action from talking to listening to music- always a good idea.
C. I consider a healthy collaboration between rasikas.org with current stars and SKs serves to build trust and may work well in promoting CM.

Hi RSachi,

The idea seems certainly novel, very interesting. However, why restrict to SK awardees? It can be a general charting process to evaluate the best (published) music of any musician.
