Sri V Dakshinamoorthy is no more

Post by advaitin »

The nonagenarian music director, who composed lovely melodies in Malayalam film songs passed away at Mylapore last night. He was pretty well respected and retired from active music composing for films around 1987. A few lovely clips below - mostly raga based compositions.

As mentioned in an earlier RIP thread, obituaries continue to haunt musical industry and makes us poorer through the snatching away of lives of our musical greats. It is a strange coincidence that yesterday's Hindu carried a feature on him and he passed away on the same day. But he will live through the innumerable classical songs he has tuned in Malayalam in heavy classical ragas like Begada, Anandabhairavi, Thodi, Sankarabharanam and a host of other ragas and the very few Tamil songs he has composed. His soul has merged with Vaikkathappan.

I am surprised at the total lack of RIP in the case of the demise of this great musician cum music director. Even I have not heard his music cocerts which were rather limited. But why this indifference?

Dakshinamurthi, popularly known as swamy was not active in carnatic concert circle. He was one of the greatest music composers ever, spanning from 1950 to 1990,thousands of ever green songs

http://www.malayalachalachithram.com/li ... 2&md=8&p=1

he used carnatic ragas(even hindustani ragas like madhuvanthi)brilliantly in film music. He was a strict composer, able to extract the best from the singers like Yesudas,Jayachandran,Janaki,Suseela,Vani Jayaram etc.
hundreds of songs comes to mind, difficult to limit them to a few..
1.ponveyil manikacha...

how he used sankarabharanam!
2.swapnangal....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_AP11nEYg
3.sankara dig vijayam...
he chose ragas according to the situation, for south indian temples, used begada, devagandhari and for north indian places like rudraprayag,he took madhuvanthi
4.alola neela vilochanangal..
hamsanandam
5.arattinanakal ezhunnelli...
ananda bhairavi
he used nadaswaram in this song

6.asoka poornima vidarum vanam....
kharaharapriya

7.harshabashpam thooki

neelambari
8.swathi thirunalin kamini
ranjini
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv99iVlsTG4
the list is endless

he was a very humble man, surrendered himself to Vaikkathappan.
I remember a lec dem on the topic infulence of carnatic music in film songs. He described how he used carnatic ragas. There were instances where he used anya swaras and one occasion somebody asked the raga of the a certain song composed by him,he laughed and replied swami ragam!

My deepest condolences to all the members of his family. He was invited and honored by Asianet during an episode of super singer. He attended the event with his wife.

I would personally rate him a notch or two above Ilayaraja & ARR on the classicism scale.

Those who listen to semi classical malayalam songs would surely appreciate his contributions to the popularity of CM-based music in films. Sadly he remains relatively unknown east of the Sahyadri range.

both Ilayaraja and ARR had connection with Swami
It was Dakshinamurthi who introduced ARRs father R.K.Sekhar to film music.ARR himself has played keyboard for some songs composed by Swami.
Both Ilayaraja and his daughter learnt carnatic music from Swami and Ilayaraja had played guitar for Swamis songs.
