KS Mahadevan- Centenary Celebrations@Skgs on Aug 04th,2013
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shri KS Mahadevan lived 90 + , certainly an age where one's faculty can take different turns .IN the centenary celebrations I indeed heard very nice things
from very respectable artists where shri KSM age or experience of listening to CM or seeing dance has not surely got into his head and made him headstrong.
# The dignataries in the dias were shri Y prabhu(skgs secy),shri K balaji (from the hindu),shri PSN , shri TRS , Smt padma subrahmanyam and the chief guest Shri nalli kuppuswami chettiar . The family members of shri KSM - the first generation and second generation each of them garlanded and from then on apart from possibly an MC who was a lady from their family, the function was totally taken over by those in the dias . In addition to these dignataries about 6 or 7 well accepted popular artists also gave their tributes thru the video recordings . The book was also released by chettiar and handed over to K balaji. Also shri KS Mahadevan's family also announced an endownment scholarship for two young students to pursue arts in skgs.
Those who spoke in the dias:
---------------------------------
# Nalli Chettiar said : SHri KS mahadevan once was travelling with him at the end of the concert. When Shri Nalli asked feedback KSM wrote all good things and said he generally calls the artists directly in the phone and communicate his shortcomings. Also shri KSM has helped Nalli in giving speeches about few personalities whom he did not know much. He gave an example of how KSM helped Nalli in giving a speech about NM narayanan, the hindu critic
# Dr Padma subrahmanyam said : Dr padma said the family of ks mahadevan conducting the celebrations was one thing , but to release a book so that it stays as permenant record is just wonderful . Dr padma said in her early days when she was trying newer things in dance when she did lot of research , shri KSM said dont worrry about others opinion , you are in right path . Incidentally Padma's research guru(forgot his name) was very close to shri ksm. Shri KSM asked padma to write articles in shanmugha magazine and asked her to write to demystify the complexities and reach rasikas. Dr padma wanted ksm family to conduct a workshop for future writers and critics .She also mentioned that smt ksm and smt ms amma were like twins . (I , rajesh never knew that dr padma is such a wonderful speaker)
# Shri PSN said : Their family were great hosts and he and his guru (ssi)always use to stay at their matunga home. Shri KSM specifically used to counsel PSN that apart from music you should also pick up all the right behavioural aspect of all artists. shri ksm gave his first break in bombay. Shri KSM always use to say that today's musician have a larger repertoire but they were not enjoying music for themself as much as vintage artists.Shri KSM was firm that CM has no deterioration across generations.
# Shri TRS said : Being the last speaker he had to quickly close . Cant remember what he said .

Re: KS Mahadevan-Centenary Celebrations@Skgs on Aug 04th,20
Those who spoke which was recorded video:
-----------------------------------------------------
# vidwan MC said : Shri KSM was instrumental in bringing him for the first time to bombay and remembered all his encouragements
# Shri CV chandrasekar said : Incidentally Shri KSM was CVC's chitappa .SHri KSM was a real connisseur of both dance and music . He could analyse so well all the artists .
# vid R vedavalli said : shri KSM was a very low key individual and he also can sing very beautifully. His english and writing skills were superb. He had
written his reviews where he also gives a lot of great quotes . Shri KSM used to ask questions and even attends lecdems and conferences . He had a
genuine love and affection and used to encourage artists , incidentally encouragement will be shown only when there is merit in that artist . His reviews will have positives and when dealing with shortcomings he would state without hurting the artists. Once when shri ksm had presented a lecdem on a topic (i think it was cittaswarams ), he met rv and got her opinion . (Rajesh Felt Smt RV is an extraordinary speaker, just straight no repetition , and if i can add the right kAlapramanam , RV is just wonderful)
# Shri TNS said : KSM was also a constructive critic. He gave an incident where shri TNS told KSM that he is going to sing a pallavi in kamalAmanOhari during morning time prior to his evening concert. KSM said why you are not singing in an established pallavi ragas like shanmughapriya, todi etal . shri tns told ksm 60 years back naina pillai had sung a pallavi in jaganmohini , when that can happen why cant kamalamanohari be sung and he persuaded KSM mama to come and hear shri TNS on kamalamanohari and pass his feedback .Shri KSM was delighted with tns kamalamanohari and changed his stand.
# Guru Karaikudi Mani said : KSM was not sensationalizing and did not try to boost his own popularity. Shri KSM was his trusted advisor and he was a very principled and noble soul.
# Bombay Sisters said : THe sisters were quite emotional as their father always use to ask ksm and take his advice . He was instrumental in getting musiri as their guru.
# Sudharani raghupathi video was played (cant recollect what she said), Smt Radha vishwanathan and chitraveena ravikiran's email was also read.
My own (rajeshnat)personal opinion:
-----------------------------------
Shri KSM has written articles for times of india and indian express and not the Hindu , i would personally would like to know how reviews were in the other two newspapers as i have nearly zero access to them . The function went really well and all of them spoke from their heart .
I would have liked if one of their family members took some time and also spoke about shri KSM . Personally would love to know how a father who spent considerable time writing and attending concerts and also being sabha secy of shanmughananda sabha had balanced his personal life or may be how he slowly inculcated the same classical passion to their kids .Yes these are some points which can touch upon lot of personal/professional life quite a few can be very embarassing too . But that is what is life right , who else can tell and narrate it better than shri MKR who can communicate so dispassionately with elegance /truth and without anyone getting hurt or embarassed. MKR Sir - I only know you and I especially missed you talking , perhaps your family wanted to be bit way too modest.
Kudos for arranging the function , it certainly had only a 15 minute delay and did not eat much time with the next nithyashree concert . I heard her first number -entarO mahanubhavulu and left. Will write in a day or two later about the preceding ashwath narayanan concert.

Rajesh, thank you for that detailed report - Dr. Padma is not Smt. Padma, and yes, she's a wonderful speaker - all part of her communication skills!!
Smt. Vedavalli is not just a great speaker, her writing is also along the same vein - simple yet powerful!
Ramesh mama - can you please give out the details of the book? - i.e., publishers, and the stores that carry it (if possible).

Thanks Rajesh for giving us a tasteful preview. More will follow, I am sure, from MKR and other attendees.
Following your excellent suggestion MKR should write here his recollections and aneddotes on KSN (despite
the incomplete SSI saga) to immortalize the memories of his Father and as a part of CM History @ Mumbai...

Rajesh,CMLover et al;First of all let me thank the rasikas besides Rajeshnat who attended,Sri.Nageswaran,CRama, and krishnakumar(I do not know what pseudonymn he uses in this forum) for attending the function. Sorry Rajesh I could not spend much time with you--I would have introduced you to some people related to the stalwarts(who seldom atend any musical event SSI's son and son-in-law!!)
Rajesh thanks for the nice comprehensive summation of the event. I plan to post the Video tributes portion on this site although Rajesh has done an excelent job of summarizing the tributes.(the actual videos were thrice as long--yours truly ruthlessly cut 2/3rds of it--the 8 artistes who spoke on the video together accounted for exactly 32 mts--had these people been present, their speeches would have been too long!!
As regards the family members not getting on stage it was a deliberate decision by the family-- as we wanted the focus on KSM and not on the satellites!! Besides we had decided that this funct n was to be orchestrated and run by the Grandchildren of KSM( Bala Shankar--my nephew based in Singapore who writes for the Hindu and Sruthi Magazine--did 99% of the work on the book. I merely helped in sorting out the whole pile of reviews/articles KSM had written.
Myself and my brother had managed KSM's 90th B'Day celebs in 2003 when the Book Musings on Music and Musicians was released. So the Grandchildren(8 of them) decided they would take up the responsibility this time--sure enough--5 out of the eight came specially for this event from Australia,Singapore and the US and there were 7 Greatgrandkids(out of 15!!)-SO WE WANTED FULL INVOLVEMENT OF EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY BUT NOT ON THE STAGE!!
The notable decision was not to bring our mother(94 years old) to the event--although she is mobile (without a cane I might add much to the consternation of all of us in the family!) she would have drawn attention to herself as all he dignitaries and artistes present would have flocked around her and greet her and be forced to listen to my Mom's chidings as to why they have not called on her(chances are they would have but not registered in her mind)--all these distractions would have taken away the solemnity of the event--the saving grace ws that all the artistes who spoke(live/recorded) all made mention of her and her hospitality. She still can recite alll 32 Todi kritis of Saint Thyagaraja with perfect rhythm and not missing a single sangathi--goes off-key at times!!
IT STILL HAS NOT HIT US--HIS CHILDREN-- as to HOW our father managed to spend time with us to show interest in Music and still be involved actively in promoting music and musicians(he was instrumental in getting my brother into Mriidangam at the age of 4--persisted till he won the Best Junior Mridangist award of the Music Academy in 1961(he was 13 @ that time) and the best Mridangist in the AIR competitions and the President's award in1965 when he was 17).He pushed me to take serious musical training which I stubbornly refused much to my regret now,I might add.My sister learnt under KVN and DKJ--but had to relegate music to bringing up four of her children. Above all both my parents gave us access to the top musicians and I personally have benefitted a lot from it as the forumites would have noted from my posts!!
Thanks to th forumites for having evinced interest in the event!!
My only regret is that neither myself nor he were aware of the existence of this site--it must have started in 2005(my father died in Sept 2006)--had he known about it he would have been thrilled by the gamut of subjects covered and the breadth of rasikas--young and old--cognoscenti or novice--this was precisely the arena that he would have thrived in(read Vijay Shiva's tribute in the KSM cenetenary thread).

It was our loss not to have had KSN as a Forumite!
Barring veeyens we have never had (AFAIK) any nonagenarian member.
Fortunate we have his daughter as we have you.
Through you we have a window into the hoary past of CM as well as the veterans we adore...
Do share with us your memories of the colouful journey of KSN in CM as well as Bharathanatyam...
Pl tell us how we can get a copy of the book released. A US based source will be appreciated...

Ramesh,
So good to hear from Rajesh and you about the details of your father's centenary celebration!
Another event I would have loved to have been part of, as you well know.
It all went so well it seems--kudos to you and your brother and to the next generation in the family.
By now, your mother might have heard parts of the tapes, will see the video soon. That will make her get all excited and happy. What a rich life she has lived, with a husband like hers, and a friend like MSS! Add to it all the friends she made with the doyens in CM when she showered them with hospitality!
Waiting for the pictures...

Dear MKR/Ramesh sir
It is so nice of you and your family to do the function very professionally (as you describe, without any of family member dominating the stage). hats off to you all
do keep your father's legacy flying high !

Forumites: Thanks for the comments. Some of my close relatives (includes my wife who could not come from the US) were disappointed that one of us my brother or myself should have been on the stage--me being the Senior should have been there!!! Rank may have its privileges but not in this setting!!!
Pics will be uploaded(with some technical help for a luddite like me!!)soon!!.
In my next post I will let my imagination fly and try to guess what the Senior Vidwans like ARI,SSI,GNB,ALATHUR,MMI would have said about my father and this event(ludicrous to think because they were all older than him!!)
