This was fairly elaborate and satisfying concert for the Kalpakkam rasikas. Bharat Sundar sang as if he had no care in the world, which brought spontaneity to the whole concert. Bharat has an enviable voice range, his voice is endowed with extra-ordinary felicity, and has a natural silken tone. His raga elaborations were rich with flowing, unbridled aakaras. The concert was filled with exuberance. Although he displayed a rich repertoire in his song selection, a weighty well known song in Shankarabharanam would have lent further distinction to the concert. He needs to experiment with variations in rendering ragam/swaram/neraval. The back bone of all the three of them, sounded the same. The violinist’s return in both Purvi Kalyani and Shankarabharam were neat. I felt that the tone from his violin will get more weighty, if he plays in the lower octave while he accompanies the main artist. Otherwise it sounds a bit too squeaky and disrupts the vocalists rich voice from reaching the audience. The laya patterns from mrudangist were delectable, especially while he accompanied the compositions, the sound from the mrudangam was good, although a bit loud at times. Overall a very enjoyable concert from the trio.
