Thanks for posting this, Cienu.
Let me join everyone in congratulating her. The university honours itself thus.
Great choice of convocation speaker too! I have heard great things about prof. Marcus, the Nobel laureate who will speak at the function.

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
Cienu: Congrats to your Mom--I am sure this accolade too will rest lightly on her shoulders. I am reminded of Patti's "KanneduthahilumKanbeero"(Simhendramadhyamam)- especially the lines 'PATTOM PADAVI PERA PADAVILLAI AYAH,THANGA PADAKKANGALAI YENNI NADA VILLAI AIYAH- this is appropriate for your Mom for the selfless sacrifices she has made to support Patti--DKJ used to say "Pattammalukku ORU Jayaraman, MS IKKU ORU Radha.
I recall the days in KALKI Gardens in the fifties when your Mom will shut herself up in the Piano Room with the Tambura and practice raga alapana with myself being the sole audience-- for some strange reason that I could never fathom,Thatha(TS) never entertained much thought about letting your Mom fly solo!!!
Remember the karvai flash in the Annamacharya krithi in Shanmukhapriya(Parama Purusha)--I remember during the rehearsals with Kadayanallur Mama for this song, Patti would raise her eyebrows with approval at this "flash" and Kadayanallur Mama would sport a Mona Lisa smile(he was not much of a showman as you know!!) of approval.
Oh Memories,memories!!!

Cienu, thanks for posting these pictures.
Ravi, I just opened them in a new tab so I could see them in full. I think the auto-resizing feature was being worked on, but I gather that it is still unresolved.

Congratulations to your mother, Cienu! Thanks for the pictures. They look great.
( the auto resize still does not work. There are a couple of workarounds as Mahavishnu mentions. On Windows ( do the equivalent for Mac ), right click on the picture and select view image to see the full image. Or right click and select copy image location and then paste it to a new tab. You may then click one more time on the image to zoom in to get a close up view )

I do hope they have more pictures in the printed article...and of course, my fondest hope is that someone will come forward with a 'reel' of at least a small portion of the actual dance itself!

There is an anecdotal reference as to how TTD wanted to help MS financially and that is how Balaji Pancharatnamala came about.
Is it factual?

I humbly request rasikas who revere the MEMORY of Bharatratna M.S.Subbulakshmi to refrain writing WRONG THINGS about her life, financial & other conditions which they only know by heresay. I happen to have been involved heavily along with several others who are not willing to steep down to the untruths & what could only be called GUTTER level information which is being passed on here as truth & knowledgeable etc. Lets have pride in her noble life & acheivements & not debase it to get instant gratification. Just because one has the freedom it does not entitle them to write any non-sense they wish under the guise of information. If you want reveal your names, addresses email etc & I am willing to appear in a PUBLIC FORUM to refute this kind of non-sense. Dr.V.K.Viswanathan, Los Alamos, NM, USA.

Sir,
As this story has been in sangeethapriya.org and also other internet channels, I wanted to know if it was factual. I did not originate or circulate it. I am one of the ardent fans of MS and I see in her not just music, but divinity revealed.
Thanks for your categorical clarification.

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
Cienu: Thanks for the videos. Stirred up lots of memories--as time fades,I am amazed at the genuine simplicity and humility of MS Amma. Looking at the Video with Kurai Onrum Illai and Maitreem Bhajatha reminds me of an anecdote involving my mother and Mami.
When the song beautifully tuned by Kadayanallur Venkataraman(God's own soul according to Mami) was launched -- Mama(TS) hit upon the idea of using cymbals for these 2 songs. As it was common practice to sing these songs in the Chennai Kutcheris(Kalyana Kutcheris included) I believe some "cynics"(who used to fawn and genuflect before Mama and Mami swearing "allegiance' to her divine music but indulged in backbiting outside) made some derisive remarks about the practice impugning that the gesture lowers the rendering to a Bhajanai level(the exact English translation of the remark in Tamil would not be very complimentary). This reached Mami's ears ( the most gullible person on earth--epitome of simplicity and innocence even in her seventies and eighties!!) and she lamented to my mother saying "if even supposedly-good acquaintances were to make such derisive remarks, how hurting it is to me,what have I done to deserve these snide references--afterall it was Mama's idea(she used to refer to TS as Radha Appa in the early fifties and sixties and then reluctantly switched to Ivar!!) to use the cymbals as an instrument of devotion(because the songs demanded that level of serenity in their rendering)
After the lament and a near-tear expression,Mami regains her composure(still seething within) and says to my mother(eyebrows raised and the slightest quiver of the nostrils) in Tamil,"Mami AAnal ava ellorum nanna irukkanam(I wish all of them nothing but good) in the sincerest tone. My mother's response would be a tame consolation in Tamil translated--Let them say whatever they like, pay no heed to those remarks". That facial expression still lingers before my eyes. As my daughter (a dancer herself--her arangetram was performed in Chennai and Mami presided over the function)once remarked to Mami,"Did you ever take to dancing--you have such beautiful expressions". Mami would let out an innocent guffaw!!
Despite several accolades being showered on her (stirring up considerable jealousy and resentment amongst her contemporaries(mostly men),Mami felt hurt that people claiming closeness to her would begrudge her fame--"if only they knew how much of physical pain and discomfort I have to go thru"--this was a constant refrain. That a person who has attained such lofty heights would attract lot of jealousy (human nature) was something that her innocent disposition could never fathom and her naivete was incredible.
Historians hundred years from now would find it hard to believe that such a great soul existed on this earth!
To paraphrase Oliver Goldsmith in the Vicar of Wakefield"Remote from the polite they still retained the primaeval simplicity of manners and frugal by habit they scarcely knew that temperance is a virtue "..In Mami's case ,humble by habit she scarcely knew that humility is a virtue!!
Comment on the stories of financial hardships behind (the Anna macharya songs releases) I can say emphatically that. they are not true. As a testament to Mama's high sense of probity and magnanimity, after their return from the US tour in 1977(the Kalki Gardens had been sold prior to their leaving for the US).when they were in a house in Valluvarkottam ( owned by one of the persons who worked for them)
the then CM--MGR visited them personally @ the Valluvarkottam house and made an impromptu offer to house them in a mansion with all the amenities befitting a National Treasure,Mama unhesitatingly and politely declined the offer(MGR was one of Mami's greatest fans--he had smidgeons of Gnanam in carnatic Music I am told!!).
To have lived in the same era and to have known Mami and Mama for over 6 decades is one of the greatest fortunes of my life!!
CIENU: How about starting a series on "Kalki Gardens" chronicling the comings and goings in that mansion spanning over 3 decades--I am willing to offer my glimpses but your mother's impressions would be far more riveting and compelling--you could add to it as well inasmuch as you spent much of your precocious mischievous years there!!!

I can confirm that the details in post#683 by MKR are accurate. As a matter of fact the DETAILS OF EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FINANCIAL ASPECTS to solve the problem involve MANY PERSONS WHO ARE NOT AROUND ANYMORE. I cannot comment on what happened in Tirupathi as I was in USA at that time & can neither confirm or deny many of the statements mentioned in your reference.
I CAN CATEGORICALLY STATE THAT the financial amounts involved were not so great as to require ENORMOUS EFFORTS and there were ANY NUMBER OF PERSONS VOLUNTARILY WILLING TO PROVIDE THE FINANCIAL HELP & that aspect was EASILY SOLVED.. TO ME THE BOTTOM LINE is the number of persons claiming to do things which they did not do and the shame that T.S. being the Gandhian he was was betrayted& let down by persons very close to him in the closing down of KALKI- which though revived did not reach the original heights in my opinion-. A SHAMEFUL part of this sordid episode was the effort to bring down such noble souls to the usual mundane levels using this episode.. Fortunately M.S.S. was a person at such a high level & a musical saint that these trivialities her mind would not even waste a nano-second on. I WISH some efforts to share the saintliness & the unbelievable elevated spiritual levels at which at least THREE I know of-M.S.S., MMI, & PMI EXISTED enabling ordinary mortals like me could at least imagine what words like NADHABRAHMAM meant are made.

Wishing the event a great success.KGS has always been in the lead to honor great musicians despite the fact that Music Academy has benefitted the most from MS Amma's concerts. I do not intend to start a controversy here---just it struck me!!!I still remember what a financial bonanza it was when MS Amma sang at the Inaugural function of the refurbished MA premises with Pandit Nehru presiding amidst a storm of protests from Senior Vidwans(Ariyakudi,PMI et al).

In dec 2008 at the music academy, there was an exclusive function where Smt Radha and Younger S Aishwarya sang a concert . The concert honoured both Smt Ms amma and Smt Radha and during that time Smt Gowri's book of steadfast devotion was also released .

In dec 2008 at the music academy, there was an exclusive function where Smt Radha and Younger S Aishwarya sang a concert . The concert honoured both Smt Ms amma and Smt Radha and during that time Smt Gowri's book of steadfast devotion was also released .[/quote]
Dear R,
Though not exactly the same as your post point : There have been TWO other such concerts I am aware of: 1) In Swami's Hall arranged by a sabha (run? by Surayaprakash's Dad) and 2) In Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival wher Smt.Radha was SPECIALLY honuored. Both Cleveland V.V.Sundaram & I were HONOURED to be part of BOTH FUNCTIONS & share our memories....VKV

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
As you know MOST of the money for the current buildings of M.A. were raised by M.S.S. To slightly provide a justification( to RajeshN) why S.K. Title is renamed M.S.S. S.K.? VKVRamasubramanian M.K wrote:Wishing the event a great success.KGS has always been in the lead to honor great musicians despite the fact that Music Academy has benefitted the most from MS Amma's concerts.
Cienu--Please post the proceedings on the forum.

Manohar Devadas's book on Madurai with his drawings is a real treat. It portrays the Madurai of the past and brings the city alive before our eyes. It is appropriate that Devadas has been awarded the Madurai Shanmukavadivu Subbulakshmi award by Dr and Mrs. Badrinath.

Re: M.S. Subbulakshmi
Today(Sept 16) is MS AMMA's Birthday--she would have been 97 years old. My mother--now 94--would forget our birthdays but seldom MS Amma's--she would be the first caller in person--it is almost 9 years since the Great soul passed away but the memories linger.
Cienu I am sure your Mom's felicitation function would go very well.If possible try to look up my Mom--as you know your Mom is still her favorite daughter!!!
I was talking to VKV the other day about Kalki gardens and I had sounded him about running a series in the forum about the Comings and Goings in Kalki gardens- over 3 decades of fond memories-he suggested it was an excellent idea and I had sounded you about it to get your Mom to contribute to the Musings .
After your return to Bangalore run it by your Mom.Thangamma can contribute a rich lode of the early days--by the way she attended my father's centenary function and stayed throughout--amazing for a woman over 85!!!
