Smt Sudha Raghunathan—A Persona that stands untouched in the field of Carnatic music

Smt Sudha Raghunathan is undoubtedly the ‘uncrowned’ Queen of Carnatic Music today. One look at the Unnati Centre yesterday and one would know that this is absolutely true. The hall as well as the basement, with projection, were jam packed ,with not an inch of floor space. When it comes to a concert of Smt.Sudha, rasikas just make it to the concert ,despite all difficulties. The mood in the auditorium was one of gaiety and enthusiasm, written all over the faces of young as well as old people. The way the rasikas sat through the 4 hour concert, in rapt attention and maintaining pin drop silence, is testimony to the quality of the audience and the love they have for Smt. Sudha’s music. Smt Sudha in her own inimitable style gave the audience a wonderful treat by way of her choice of songs as well and excellent presentation. The RTP alternating between the 2 ragas Madhyamavathi and Dharmavathi, was a sure highlight of yesterday’s concert. Smt Sudha’s vidhvath was evident in the execution of the RTP. Sri.Raghavendra Rao on the violin gave excellent support and the tonal quality of his violin ,for a high pitched sruti, was truely conmmendable. Neveli Sri.Skandasubramaniam on the mridangam gave energetic percussion support. Sri Rajashekar on the morsing ensured that he grabbed the attention of the audience, with his impactful playing of the little instrument. On the whole it can be described as a Grand and Fitting Finale to the music series of UTSAV 2013.

From today starts the Discourse series by Sri Dushyanth Sridhar, who is very popular and features regularly in TV. He is a Bitsian working for TCS in Mumbai. He regularly gives speeches on spirituality in English, tamil and writes articles.

The song in JayamanOhari, is it 'yangAtulu' or JagnyAtulu?
The song in sindhurAmakriyA is 'SudhA mAdhurya bhAshaNa'. She starts as 'MAdhurya bhAshaNa ' and then sings as 'SudhA mAdhurya bhAshaNa'. She sang it at MumbI on 15 th August.

Punarvasu, I assumed that a bit on Hispanic influence had permeated the world of yagnAdulu, when it was written with a 'j'...!

Rshankar, I have heard a Bengali friend of mine say 'joga' for 'yoga'. ''bha ' and 'va' , 'ra' and 'la' are some such pairs of letters.
It is said
'va bhavayOrabhEdah' and 'ra layOrabhedhah' meaning one can use 'bha' in place of 'va' and 'la' in place of 'ra' and vice versa.

'jna' is the right thing; ஜ்+ஞ is the sandhi, but in common parlance it has become 'gna'; Ganguli transliterates 'Yajnaseni' for Draupadi in his magnum opus of translation of Mahabharatam.
Meenakshi has become meenatchi through Tamizh.
There was long back a discussion that DKJ mispronounced Valli in Srivallidevasenapathe. Actually DKJ's pronunciation was right. It is a Samskritham kriti of Sivan and in Samskritam Valli is used not VaLLi.

Guys,
Usually as i see it a lot of Sudha bashing goes on in these pages..
Her contribution to Carnatic music remarkable & her Guru Bhakti is divine..
She is simply awesome & without doubt the best of her generation.
Cheers.

I am confused...we are discussing the use of the j sound instead of the y sound, and not gnya versus gna, right?

Why Hispanic?

There are several dialects among Indian languages where j replaces y. jamuna, juga, jAma vs yamuna, yuga, yAma, for example.

j is pronounced 'y' in German too.

Not to forget Jesudas / Yesudas.

Actually if it were hispanic the /j/ sound would be an /h/ as in Julia would be Hulia.
