Raga- HRADINI (a rare raga)
Please listen to the following carnatik Keerthan, sung by Bellary Brothers, Sri. M. Venkatesh Achar & Sri.M.Seshagiri Achar, in a rarest of rare ragas, Raga-Hradini ,
The song is " Sree Purandara Gurum Namami-set to Adi Talam.
The audio link of this song is < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt0tQAW70K0 >
The song is composed by Vidhwan Sri. Bellary M. Sheshagiri Achar himself. The lyrics of this 'Guru' keerthana is noted down and corrections,if any, are most welcome.
Pallavi :
ShrI purandara gurUm namAmI
pampA kshetra sthira nivAsam aharNisham
Anu Pallavi:
nArada avatAram naravaram
sAragAna kalO dhArakam- su sAragAna.......
Charanam:
karNAtaka sangItha pitAmaham
vyAsa yathIvara karakamala sancAram
gnyAna bhakti vairAgya su bhOdhakam
vishEshadAsa grahaNyam varENyam
Raga- Hradini,
According to my views, this raga resembles the ragam 'Amrutavarshini ' more during the poorvanga sanchara and the raga lakshana instantly changes from Amruhavarshini in the uttaranga sancharam ( I feel, the kaishiki Nishad swara-N2 sounds here and not the N3 swara (kakala nishad) of Amruthavarshini raga. More details, if available, about of this rare raga may please be discussed in this thread for our information. I hope more details of the raga will come out from music experts in our forum.
The song is an awesome rendition and worth listening/learning.

Very melodious.
I wonder whether Lakshman can tell us the raga lakshanam.
It does sound like Amritavarshini to start with.
Looks like a vakra raga...

sAragAnakalOddharakam seems right.
In their version there is no Ri.
HrAdini is the name of a river in classical dictionaries.

I also felt there is some resemblance to mandari and amrithavarshini. Not surprising after I checked the Aro/Ava of the three ragas.
Nice song and well sung as well.

Re: Raga- HRADINI (a rare raga)
Thanks for the valuable information posted by the respective rasikas and my pranams to all of them. I am of the view here that the note 'R' in the descending scale is very weak, may be due to the prominent use of the note "G3" , the sound of which suppresses/weakens R2 (R2 sounds like an anuswara to G3 here). Please commend.
Can we assume that when the Nishada of Amrutavarshini chages from N3 to N2 then it becomes the raga Hradini !!!

There is no Ri even in their chitteswaras.
I thought about the name. The source could be hRd (heart) or hrad (water, pool etc)? hrAdini is a river.. So maybe that is the name.

So calming. I found this on sangeethpriya. Sharing the dropbox link to this piece in raga hradini. I had never heard this raga before, and indeed I couldn't find anything on my usual hunting spots: gaana.com and raga.com. Anyway, here you go (who is the singer? Her voice is so familiar):
http://db.tt/Jcz0JInT
It would be great to hear it in instrumental....please do share, if you find it.

Re: Raga- HRADINI (a rare raga)
Saarangam,
Guru Purandaradasar (1484 to 1564) hailed from the historical place called ' Hampi ' in the North Karnataka state, situated on the banks of the river 'Tungabhadra' . It is 350 km from Bangalore' . Hampi city is located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The name Hampi is said to be derived from the name "Hampe ", which is situated on the banks of the river Tungabhadra. The river Tungabhadra's old name was river 'Pampa', in whose banks the city of Hampi (Hampe) is built. Later the name Hampe became anglicized as Hampi. The Emperor Krishna Deva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire was the ruler of Vijayanagara from 1509-1529 and the Emperor was a deciple of Guru Vyasatirtha. Purandaradasa,Kanakadasa, Vijayendra Thirtha were few of the popular students of Guru Vyasatirtha.
The pallavi of the kriti "pampA KshEtra sthira nivAsam" therefore, may be referring to the place Hampi on the banks of the river Tungabhadra (old name 'Pampa')
Any corrections are welcome.

Many readers of this forum may have heard of a river pampA in Sabarimala. Lord Ayyappan of Sabarimala is
often referred to as pampAvAsan. As a native of Kerala, the reference to pampA in the kriti dedicated to Purandaradasar was
confusing to me. Thank you for clarifying that the old name of river Hampi was Pampa.

Re: Raga- HRADINI (a rare raga)
Thanks for this song in a rare raga. It was melodious. I have not heard of these artists. It was nice to hear them sing in praise of Purandara Dasa, the Pitamaha of Carnatic music. The start does sound like Amritavarshini. Thanks to Lakshman ji and others for the info on this raga.
