I had the good fortune of listening to a wonderful concert by the veteran, multi-faceted Sri. Ganesan sir. What a voice - deep, flexible and seamlessly flowing through octaves. It was sheer pleasure to listen to him and watch him – with his cheerful self on the stage. From start to finish, the concert had such spirit, there was not a moment of dullness – it was hard to believe that this energetic artist is in his early 80s . Kalpana Swarams in Kedaram and Bahudari were sung beautifully - a few sung in the upper octave adding verve. Bahudari swarams were sung with different ‘eduppus’ in the Pallavi line – ‘Thandavam’ , ‘ananda thandavam’ , ‘sadananda thandavam’ . Bhairavi ragam was full of bhaavam – the Pallavi was on Goddess Kamakshi. Theruvil Vaarano was lovely to listen to – very elegant sangatis. The entire accompanist team played very well, supporting the beautiful singing.
A great evening of music – and a bad miss for those who could not attend!

BTW, Your guru Smt VS and I had a conversation here about getting his music archived at the Smithsonian (http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... ti+ganesan). Just wondering if there was any progress on that front ...

What all surprises are sprung on us! A gifted vidvAn in his golden years with many skills! I had connected his name only with jalatharangam and wondered at first why HR had posted as a vocal concert.

Yes. The violinist is his son.

And Venkatasubramanian is a disciple of his father and has received advanced training with M.S. Anantharaman. You can definitely see the Parur school in his playing!

Thanx for sharing. Excellent performance by the multi-faceted personality. Kudos to the accompanist team for their best support. Tanjore Subramaniam nowadays not to be found around. He was continuously playing for Bombay sisters after Dindukal Sethuraman. Thanks once again.

Thank you Harini for a detailed review of a scholarly concert. I had never got the opportunity to listen to this vidwan. I am waiting for one.

I vividly remember your Guru's review of his concert a few months back- a rare instance of one great vidushi reviewing another great vidwan's concert. That itself speaks of his vidwat and capability. He should be featured more frequently.
