Din: one for the electronic composers

Post by Nick H »

.

Din is Noise --- is a polyphonic, multiple-drone microtonal synthesiser. Or, err ...something like that!

Don't expect a user interface that looks anything like keyboard, knobs or patch panel: this is something very different. Learning it is about as difficult as seeing vi for the first time (for those that know what I mean by that) but one can soon get into modes where strange and amazing noises can be made with keyboard and mouse, like only having to learn i and then start writing strange and amazing things in vi. It is addictive: it kept me up until 4.00am last night! You can draw pictures and listen to the sound they make. You can edit the actual waveform (which might make more sense to people who understand audio waveforms) and more, much more. I don't even know what a Bezier curve is --- but I'm still having fun, and I've only played with it for one night.

I can imagine people like Arun and VK getting actual music out of this thing

And, it was made by an Indian.

Just realised it is only for Linux.

Still, I don't think I'm the only one around here that cast off the MS shackles :D

Am pressed for time and haven't had the time to install and play around. Will soon do. Too tempted and enjoyed some din anyways.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the tutorial/demo videos have got caught up in the file-sharing-sites ban. There is still a page of sample sounds available on their site.

I think that ban was sorted out after a short time. The DinIsNoise videos are available.

Here is another for the electronic composers:

Virtual ANS

A spectral synthesiser: you paint the music. It will even convert images to sound.

it is easy to set up and get started with, and very easy to make weird noises with. Again, the musicians may well be able to do more than that.

Nick: I missed this thread when you first posted it. I watched the video of Din. As you say, it is not for those who are command line phobic, but I am perfectly at home with it. It looks interesting and powerful. He has a great sense of humor. Towards the end he says with a straight voice: 'Tell your friends, get your mom to use it'! ;)
