WOW! What a Find!
I stumbled upon a treasure of old Indian recordings on Youtube.
Here is the catalog:
http://www.youtube.com/user/sunny78rpmm ... =dd&view=0
You can hear Gauhar Jan. You can hear a host of South Indian singers. All recorded in the 1905 timeframe.
And Veena Seshanna!

In that case, I wish you had shared this earlier with the rasikas.org community.Sreeni Rajarao wrote:I am sure others have stumbled upon this channel (like me) for over a year..

If your interest was only veena music, yes, this recording has been on the Internet for a year.
But one Gauhar Jan recording has this date:

Harimau,
Big thanks!
For once, makes me feel so young because to me too, they are vintage!
I don't think Vikram Sampath could find as many pictures and recordings of Gohar Jan when he published his book on her!
One finds all sorts of music here. Comedy songs is one genre I hadn't heard about.

Harimau,..
There was another 1905 find ...
Violin-parimala ranga pate-telugu-kamboji (pallavi)played by Narayanasami Iyer Pudukottai
Recorded in March 1905 at Madras by William Sinkler Darby & Max Hampe for the Gramophone & typewriter Ltd (later- Gramophone company - HMV) One of the first recordings made in South India..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCwRYw46 ... e=youtu.be
This was posted by me at http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 75#p246307
Unfortunately, there was no takers as usual...
Still earlier, Earlier, I posed about the Jaladarangam vidwan Brahma Sri Tiruchendur Appadurai Aiyengar –playing Karaharapriya – Athi
and also that of Professor Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu –playing Thanam-Kalyani
at viewtopic.php?f=12&t=19915
When I I stumbled upon this link .....

Thanks, Venkatk! Yes, some of your rare finds go unnoticed
I wondered how many heard the music (so clear-sounding and precious) of Kallidaikurichi
gOTTuvAdyam Narayana Iyengar, Chithravina Ravikiran's grandfather.

Venkatakailasam: I do not know about others, but I definitely listened to that excellent violin rendition of Pudukkottai Narayanaswamy Iyer at that time and I remember saying something about it in that thread as well. It was great.
That song is in the same youtube channel of sunny78rpmmusic that harimau posted in this thread. So we first came to know about these great 78rpm records through you. It is good harimau opened up a new thread for this.
While we are at this, for the sake of completeness, let me link Vikram Sampath's Archive Of Indian Music site for such vintage recordings: http://archiveofindianmusic.org/artist_info
For example, there are two more songs of Pudukkottai Narayanaswamy Iyer at his site:

( the second one is mis-labled as Hamsadhwani )
