Lyrics & Translation of "bAro murAri" in mOhanakaLyAni rAgam

Post by HariKrishna »

I'm looking for the correct lyrics and translation of "bAro murAri" as sung by Sudha Raghunathan on her Purandradasa Krithis CD.

A previous discussion on this subject is found here: http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... ari#p96535

However, the lyrics documented there are different from the ones as sung by Smt Sudha Raghunathan. Also, I need a translation.

Two more questions - is the language here more Sanskrit or Kannada? Also, how do members feel about the authorship of this krithi? According to the discussion archived above, it was felt that the krithi was authored by one "vAdirAja" (vAdirAja tIrtha?) instead of purandara dAsa. But, the version sung by Sudha Raghunathan in mohanakaLyAni is different - could her version be by Purandara dAsa? Listening the last charaNam, I was not sure.

4: venkaTaramaNa samkaTaharaNa kimkaramaragaNa vamdita caraNa
sharadindu vadana aravimda nayana vara yadu sadana shrI hayavadana

Harikrishna Ji,

the version you have mentioned has more sanskrit than kannada.

The other version has anupallavi in kannada and one carana in kannada

the rest is in sanskrit.

Version 2 is sung by Ms Ranjani Nagaraj, as a Ragamalika

The link is ::http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wQKUPoVpsw

Both the versions have the ankitam of SriVadiraja Swamiji.

Which is the version you want, to be translated?

I'm listening to it now. Sudha's rendition appears to have the pallavi from version 2 and a modified version of the anupallavi from version 1. Instead of "kaustubha bharaNa" in the anupallavi, she is singing "manjula bharaNa." Also, instead of "shaurE" it sounds like she is singing "shaurI" in the pallavi.

P: bArO murAri bAlaka shaurI sAra vicArI santOSha kAri
A: aruNAbja caraNa manjula bharaNa parama vitaraNa pannaga shayana
C: vEnkataramana sAnkaTaharaNa kinkara maRajana vanDitha caraNa
aravinda nayana sharadindu vadana vara yadu sadana siriraya vadana

That's it from what I can tell from the CD and your lyrics above. That's what I want translated. I guess it's more like version 1 overall except for the modified pallavi and anupallavi.

Thanks! So, I take it you are considering "siri haya vadana" to be a mispronunciation or maybe an intentional adulteration for the sake of rhythm? Or is "siri" an actual word?

The word *siri* is taken from the sanskrit word *SrI*
Both the words mean, fortune, prosperity, wealth.
It is not mispronounced or intentionally changed.
