Nada Vinodhini on DD Podigai at 9 PM Mon-Thur

Yesterday a competition series on carnatic music has started on DD pothigai. Jointly held by SPIC MACAY and DD. 9-10 PM. There are four candidates per day. Yesterday's judges Charumathi ramachandran, MA Sundaresan and a Jalatharangam vidwan (missed the name). Each participant is asked to sing Alapanai, neraval and swaram of one heavy ragam and a 2 min outline of a light ragam- approx 15 min each. Worth watching. Very nice to see talented youngsters performing in a competitive mood. Huge prize money. Originally announced as 10 lakhs- one prize, later changed to 4 prizes- 3 lakhs, each.

It will be interesting to know the criterion and procedure used for selecting the participants. Really brings out talent.

Yesterday's episode featured Bharatsundar,Abhilash and 2 young women.Out of them Ms.Madhav sang brilliantly.(rAjuveDala - todi).Today's episode will feaure rAmakrishnanmurthy it seems.By the by the title muisc by chiravina Ravikiran is very catchy.The title card doesn't credit the musicians behind it.Why?

Also I would appreciate a brief intro about the participants like the place they r from , guru's name,etc.

Yesterday's episode was interesting.The judges this time were offering their opinion soon after the performance of the contestants.Mrs.CR observed that the voice of RKMurthy thins down as and when he progresses on a sangathi and asked to correct that.Madurai GSM gave some insight into how dEvagAndhAri should be sung.

The performance of Srividhya (R.S.Iyer) was worth mentioning.The young boy,I think the son of Palghat Sreeram and Baby was a surprise inclusion.

The instrumental sounded much better than the vocal.

The way Sri.Sundareswaran pointed out the problem of the nishadam in shanmukhapriya was impressive. I felt that the raga was excellent but the kruthi not so good but did not know that there was an actual technical flaw. " Yaar ingu ulahelaam aainthida vallaar" as Manonmaniyam says (Who is capable of analysing/understanding everything in this world) !

In the set of instrumentalists yesterday, 16th oct, the girl Deepika was really outstanding with her violin. Sri. MAS referred about her guru. We do not know who it is. She has a definite chance of winning the competition, too.

I did not know that the percussion artists are required to say the jathis (is it the right name) verbally. I thought they were only trained to play the instrument.

Why was vidya kalyanaraman calling it as per cushion instead of per kashan?

That should be Vishal Sapuram, Ravikiran's student. He regularly accompanies Ravikiran in some of his concerts. Recently in a concert in Bangalore he was sitting behind Ravikiran accompanying on the chitravina.

The Karnataka section, I accidentally noticed, was at 10 AM in DD Chandana. Some of them are just brilliant. Suma Sudhindra, Giridhar Udupa, and Vani satish were judges.

The CM semifinals list was on SPICMACAY chennai website. The Semis were held in Chennai last two weeks of Oct.
I don't know when the final is going to be. If will be in Mumbai.

Yes, many youngsters were brilliant. There was a boy from tenth in HM Blr. He simply blew away the judges-who were quite tough in general.

Young Akshay Anand of Bangalore (student of Sri KS Kalidas)was featured on DD Chandana from Blr quarterfinals today. He got some great comments :

Came to know to that Kum. M.P. Sruthiravali (daughter of vidushi Manda Sudharani) has won the Naad Bhed (Carnatic vocal) competition
which was held at Mumbai yesterday. Hearty congratulations to Kum. Sruthiravali.

The one thing that is most perplexing is why DD has been tongue-tied like Manmohan Singh about the telecast schedule. We are yet to see the semifinals and finals in both HM and CM.

I can tell you there were spectacular talents from Bangalore in HM.
