Deepavali Greetings

Post by venkatakailasam »

Wishing all A happy Deepavali and Music Season....

Image

The krithi "Sri Lakshmi Varaham" in the raga "Abhogi". Dikshithar composed this krithi when he visited the Lakshmi Varaha Swamy temple in Kallidaikurichi on the banks of river "Taamaraparani"(the river named so because it was supposed to be filled with lotuses)..

"I worship("Bhaja"+"aham") Lord Lakshmi Varaha, who is in the company of Goddess Lakshmi and gives happiness and proseperity("Shubha pradham") to those who take refuge in him ....
Once again we can observe the simplicity of his composition. The pallavi goes as "Sa Dha Ma Ga Ri Sa" which is the descending part(avarohanam) of abhogi raga scale. Also, the "Sa Dha Ma" notes are sung flat and simple but the sangathi sounds so beautiful and ornamented.

Thanks for the greetings and the wonderful song.

Tamaraparani got the name because it is known to contain copper (thamiram). As far as I know, lotus doesn't grow in rivers but only in ponds

Folks": HAPPY DIWALI!!! On a lighter note Diwali happens to be my birthday(Hastha nakshatra)!! I used to "boast" when I was in High School that I was born on Diwali day--the same day Muthuswamy Dikshitar died(albeit 103 years earlier)--implying to my friends that I may have been the reincanation of MD--till the "bubble" was burst by my Math Teacher(a music connoisseur I might add) with a comment in Tamil which translated means(So two regrettable events occurred that day!!!!).

Since then I have ceased to boast lest some clever forumites upend me a second time!!!!!

MKR,
Are you inviting trouble? :) Only kidding...

Venkatk's lights are festive, the sweets can feed an army (beautifully arrayed, they are). Eye candy only, for some on Rasikas.org :(

Wishing you, Nirmala, the family and all rasikAs who happen to look at this thread, a happy one. You can find more celebration in other threads too!

RaviSri- In Sri Kanthimathim song........"Shankhadyashttotara sahasra KalashAbishekam " appears in the lyrics. I am curious to know on which occasion Godess is bathed using 1000 Kalasham & 108 Shankas ?? Is it an annual ritual ? I have visited this lovely temple.

Dear Venkatakailasam:Nice to be associated with the "chip" of the old (and Gold) block!!!!

Manjunath: I do not know the answer to your query re;Shankas but I will get the explanation from a learned friend of mine--who has been acknowledged to be an authority on MD(by no less a person than the late DKP!!)

Manjunath, I don't know when the sahasra kalashabhisheka is done at the Kantimati shrine.

There is another song of Dikshitar, 'shankaram abhirAmi manOharam' in kamalA manOhari, in which he says, 'shankAbhiShEka gAtram'. This was written at the Abhirami temple, Tirukkadayur. Here the shankAbhiShEkam is done during the month of Kartikai (November-December). Probably in Tirunelveli also they do it in Kartikai.

Deepavali ?!

"Hoax or misrepresented images have a huge potential of going viral on the Internet ... ...

For the last few years a satellite image purportedly showing an illuminated India on Diwali night unfailingly does the rounds on social media websites. But the fact is the image put up by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Geophysical Data Centre has nothing to do with Diwali ... ... ...

The image in question is actually an overlay of different photos taken by NASA satellites over the years to highlight India's increasing population via night illumination."

My dIpAvali came
With a sunset so
Glorious, I gasped--
In a canopy of gold
Orange and crimson
foliage surround--

The NASA one was pleasing too--
A man-made map of million lights
Something new for me, after He
Painted the sky and the trees...
