Re: Nadasurabhi Annual Music Festival-2013
To the best of my knowledge, this year's festival was by and large the grandest in all these years. Nithyashree's inaugural concert had a bit of voice problems and mike problems in the beginning which got solved from song 3, I think.
Jugalbandi on day 2 Mysore Manjunath- Pravin Godkindi was much better than expected and also much better received. Personally, as I have little or no experience in this format was definitely skeptical to start with. But the initial varnam itself changed the opinion. Sri.Godkindi joined in, not with the expected hinductani touch but with portions of the varnam in carnatic style itself. It was very nice, especially because the H flute is very sweet. There were no high decibel competition. The artists were really complimenting each other and it made very pleasant listening experience.
3rd day, sanjay's- already an exclusive thread is running.
4th day Malladi bros- also separate string available.
5th day was Ranjani Gayathri- wonder why there is no separate thread. Most packed hall in spite of continuous rain outside. High quality performance as usual.
The festival was not without hiccups. Last day, Sunday morning, Sri.TNS could not personally come to receive the sangeetha Surabhi award. Sri TNS Krishna was deputed. Programme started a few minutes late (extremely unusual in Nadasurabhi), as chief guest Mysore Subramanya came late (blame it on modi meeting). Both Subramanya and particularly TNS Krishna made brilliant speeches. Very rare for me to enjoy speeches. Also it may be due to the fact that the subject was Sri.TNS, my all time idol. Krishna's concert was also extremely good. He selected songs which would exemplify charecteristics of his father (Ayyo, ivan vadivenbadu azhiyaada azhagudayaan- Kamabaramayanam- Ayyo, how can describe Rama's beauty- Here- Ayyo, how can I describe TNS's greatness), Alagalalla (curly locks of rama and TNS) and so on. Also covered songs on Subramanya being the karthigai day. Did not leave out anything- RTP, thillana, etc., in the brief 2 hour concert.
Evening again TM Krishna did not come and was substituted by Amrutha Venkatesh. She gave a brilliant concert. Avaneeswaram Vinu flown in from TVM. Sudheendra continued. Phanindra bhaskar in place of Udupa. Although many in the audience knew of the change, due to inertia, having attended 6 earlier concerts in the series trooped in in the evening. They did not troop out. Around 450-500 people stayed on for more than 2 hours, absolutely impressed by Amrutha's calibre. The change was well accepted. Amrutha was the true winner.

Just a small opinion. Is it necessary to get Related topics to get listed at the bottom of the page. It is confusing. There is always the Search facility to reach these topics if some one is interested. Just a feeling. May be there are reasons to have it this way.

A few other song lists with general comments from Dr.Shyam Krishnan
First few general comments applicable to all concerts.
1. A word of appreciation for the beautiful ambience, wonderful acoustics managed well, a house full receptive audience for all the
concerts.
2. Each of the artist chose few lesser known compositions of both well known composers and lesser known composers. This is a
good trend as it will widen the knowledge of the rasikas.
3. It was sad to note that none of the artists included Padams or Javalis in their list. At this rate ten years from now the younger
generation will not be aware of the existence of such exquisite gener of music.

Oh - Now I know who kssr is. I long suspected this - given his presence in Nadasurabhi concerts (even when few of us were there) and his postings - and doubling up as the photographer. I will meet you sir next time and say hello. You all should feel deservedly proud at the way concerts are conducted.

Thanks. Gardabha_gana. I think I inadvertantly tore off my own veil. Looking forward to meeting you. Thankfully a photographer was employed to take the festival photos, not necessitating my taking my own picture at the awards function.
