Naad Bhed
SPICMACAY and Doordarshan had indulged in publicity overdrive regarding their Naad Bhed initiative. Prizes worth Rs 16 lakhs were up for grabbing in Hindustani and Carnatic genres. The regional prelims were duly telecast as per schedules announced. The results of Hindustani semifinals held in Kolkata were put up in SPICMACAY website. Afterwards there is total silence. No results of Carnatic semifnals held in Chennai and finals held in Mumbai. No announcements about telecast dates and times on Doordarshan.
Does anyone know what happened or what is happening?

I am NOT allowed to tell you more than this:
NAAD BHED finals were held in Mumbai. CM finalists did well. Prizes were announced.
Nobody has a clue about the broadcast schedule.

I am not allowed to tell you more than this. Hmmph!
"Two finalists from Kerala - Mahadevan S (Carnatic vocal) and R B Ramjay (mridangam) - have been selected for ‘Naad Bhed’, the classical music reality show that is being conducted jointly by Spic Macay and Doordarshan. The finals being held in Mumbai are being aired on Doordarshan from November 12 to 23, at 7.15 pm.
The initiative is to promote and popularise Indian classical music all over the country.
The two finalists from Kerala were selected in the semi-finals held in Chennai. Twelve participants were selected for the semi-finals based on the quarter-finals conducted in Kerala in the third week of October 2013.
Naad Bhed is being organised to popularise our classical arts. Doordarshan is broadcasting the performances across the country. Regional rounds of competition were conducted across Doordarshan’s 20 regional kendras. All these rounds culminated in the national finals, the telecast of which has begun on DD National Network.
Legendary maestros of Indian classical music including Prof T N Krishnan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Begum Parween Sultana, Vidwan T V Shankarnaraynan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Vidushi Vedavalli form the judging panel for the finals.
The award categories are Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani vocal), Pandit Ravi Shankar Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani instrumental), Ustad Alla Rakha Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani Accompanist), M S Subbulakshmi Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic vocal), Vidwan Sheikh Chinna Moulana Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic instrumental) and Vidwan Palghat Mani Iyer Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic accompanist).
In each category, the winner will get Rs 2 lakh as the cash award. One mega winner in each form, Hindustani & Carnatic music, will win Rs 10 lakh each. Besides, all finalists at the national-level will receive Rs 10,000 as appreciation reward."
Seems like you missed the broadcast!

Classical contests - a mega boost
DC | Chitravina N. Ravikiran | 24th Nov 2013
The last few years have seen a rise in high profile contests for classical music in India as well as in countries like USA. While established organisations like The Music Academy, Krishna, Narada and other sabhas in the city have been active over years like the Cleveland Festival in USA, what is heartening is TV channels like Jaya, Raj & Vijay have joined the fray in giving a very different slant to the arena of competition, turning them into high-voltage reality shows with established and legendary artistes validating or critiquing hundreds of talents. Of the lot, Raj TV teamed up with a jeweller to offer excellent cash incentives of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs2 lakh to the first three winners, after testing their all-round skills over 13 rounds.
The latest entrant to this electrifying field was Doordarshan SPIC MACAY combo, which conducted Naad-Bhed with the biggest incentive in this field so far where 6 first prize winners (a vocalist, one melody instrumentalist and one percussionist each from Carnatic and Hindustani) receiving Rs3 lakh and two Super First prize winners (one from each system) from the above receiving a bonus of Rs7 lakh, taking home a whopping Rs1 million! Naad-bhed thus became the first mega contest to give equal opportunity to instrumental music, a move that hopefully will be emulated by all other reality shows, since the country’s musical face among non-Indian listeners across the world have been instrumentalists for the most part over decades.
Naad-bhed was held rigorously until the deciders in Bombay, where some of India’s greatest legends with unimpeachable credentials like Prof T. N .Krishnan, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shri R. K. Shrikanthan, Begam Parveen Sultana, Smt R. Vedavalli and Smt Prabha Atre judged the final and super-final rounds, after other distinguished juries had eliminated some of the most well-known names of the younger generation in earlier rounds held in Chennai, Delhi, Calcutta, Bengaluru and other cities.
The winner’s name can’t be revealed (at least in my article!) before telecast. While the standards of the contest were fairly high, it was commendable that a final list of three from each category made it to the super finals, slashing through their co-contestants. It is interesting that in Carnatic vocal, all three were girls, including a pre-teenager.
That the Tavil got represented in the percussion category is a healthy sign for that instrument.
While each of the super-finalist deserves kudos for making it nationally, it may have made the event fairer all around had each be given prizes, something that the organisers must look into in subsequent editions, if they need to consistently attract quality participants.

There's an old tamizh film song where the late AM Rajah sa'ab, singing for the hero croons to the heroine, 'nAdattil bhEdam uNDu, namakkadu vENDAmE' (even music/sound has differences, which we do not need), with a clever pun on bhEdam- should apply here too, perhaps?

Really!!!???
Obviously the guys who named it in DD didn't know of this pun.
In fact, Naad BHED was a name hidden by almost all Kendras because nobody seemed to buy into it.
They called it nAda vismaya in Bangalore and I think it was called nAda vinOdam in Chennai.

So, bhed also means "evacuation of the bowels"! How could we all have missed that? Don't we say bhedi in Tamil for dysentery?Rsachi wrote:

How do they get away with it?
I mean, a couple of years back when I wrote that my rushing to the bathroom for the above activity was likened by someone to what exactly was happening on the stage (this was on a thread related to the quality of the food at canteens operated at various sabhas), the post was censored.
And here, they are getting away with it on National TV!
I should stop posting here and start my commentaries on TV instead!

There is another way of looking at all this.
We here are all united in our attitude to Naad as well as Bhed.

To my very limited knowledge, the meaning of the word 'Naad Bhed'
seems to be ..
Divine music which one cannot enjoy without understanding the finer nuances...
How it is conducted and and other drawbacks may be a matter of controversy..
There is another thread here..

I think Bhed here only means varieties - vocal and that of various instruments including percussion (and in each category Carnatic and Hindustani)

Re: Naad Bhed
When the programme was announced by SPIC MACAY, I did communicate with them on this 'Bhed' aspect. When I informed that it connotes to the difference and wanted it to be renamed as 'Nada Samanvaya' as they had planned the competition on both the systems of Indian classical music and one of the goal was to increase the appreciation of both the systems. I was informed that in Hindi the meaning is 'mystery' and did not want to change. Obviously programme executives of DD must have changed it considering the Sanskrit and regional language of Kannada and Tamizh. But they do show the 'Bhed' in the background screen.
Let us ignore this aspect but appreciate the initiative. Many talented youngsters got the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Dislike the scatalogical "humor" introduced as "clever" responses to a simple OP query on finals, dates and broadcast.

And at least in one concert in Chennai where the young vidushi was featured recently, the announcement identified her as the recipient of the Rs 1 million prize.
Thus I am breaking no rules when I inform the public that Kumari Ravali, daughter of Smt Manda Sudharani, is the grand prize winner for Carnatic vocal.

Bhed also means difference. We have it in tamil (may be spoken Tamil- lest the Tamil fanatics pounce upon me) when we say 'Jathi bedam, mada bedam- difference in caste or religion.

Pl. see
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 0&start=25
In the above thread Rsachi mentioned the instrumentalist from Bangalore and then deleted it.
He should probably mention the name here now atleast !
I also came to know that the winner in the percussion category is a Thavil artist who is also from Visakhapatnam (like Kum. Sruthi Ravali).
I think this is a phenomenal achiement and goes to prove that there are great GURUs in CM outside chennai too
