It was such a wonderful performance by the duo @ Ngs on 7th of Dec.

Sahana was the main ragam....beautifully woven by the two of them.

Began with a Varnam in Kaanada, followed by a Tyagaraja kriti "Raa Raa" in harikambodhi for which there was an exchange of Swaras among the brothers and Sri M.A.Sundaresan on the violin.

Dikshitar's krithi in Shanmugapriya was the sub main, followed by another Tyagaraja kriti whose ragam am not sure of....

The saddest part was that the Brothers were very softly heard when they sang together and were not at all heard during the individual Alapana and Swaram sessions !! Looked as if the brothers were accompanying UKS sir, MAS and EMS sir !! As a result the subtle sangathis the brothers tried to bring out were lost amidst the sounds of the accompaniments ! Pathetic !!

High time Main artistes do something about this !!

That must have been because of mic settings. Otherwise their concert is always superb. Bringing out rare kritis and intra-appreciation and dedication-they imbibed it from their Guru. For me, they are the top duo-today.

What was the "Ra Ra" krithi of Thyagaraja - was it Rama Nannu Brovara by any chance?

Yep. this krithi is not in circulation now - due to the immense popularity of Dinamani Vamsa.

GNB, MLV have also sing this Harikamboji krithi.

I was sitting pretty much near the last row and yet could catch even the lower sancharas very well :) Also heard some people saying "yaaru ippo Mosapoku ellam paadara? ivaa thaan paadara" in an appreciative vein. I personally thought it was a well planned concert.

Hi,

Any song list.
I like to know whether they sang any tamil song .
I am not sure whether it is this concert, but there was a review in vikatan or kumudam saying that they donot prefer to sing tamil songs.

If they do sing a tamizh song, are we going to analyse 'how' they sing it? If we do, they may give up the idea of singing tamizh krutis altogether! Hope we don't discourage them from attempting to master a few tamizh songs. Coming to think of it, NedunUri sings parAtparA (mostly sanskrit words) and nAn oru viLaiyATTu bommaiyA and a few others, perhaps. Even if he went without singing a single song in tamizh, he still remains to be a great vocalist. Speaking in tamizh fluently does not mean that one can feel comfortable in singing in the language. Whatever the reasons, we as rasikAs can still enjoy Malladi's repertoire which includes many rarely heard krutis...

Just to clarify. I have heard the Malladis sing tamizh songs on more than a few occasions. Their pronunciation is not the greatest, but they have attempted Sevikkavendum aiyya in Andolika, idatju padam in Khamas and Kapali in mohanam (not as a main piece though). I have also heard them sing LGJ's thillanas which have charanams in tamizh. I was chatting with them on their last tour of N. America and they confessed that they are most comfortable singing compositions of the trinity and Annamacharya.
